That bird is a Grouse. No way on earth it will hurt you. And the snake looks like a Timber Rattler, as someone said below. If you can't see the tail, the wedge-shaped head is a way to recognize rattlers. The Copperhead, another venomous snake of the East, also has a wedge-shaped head.

Ughh! I found one of those on one of my beautiful hydrangea blooms this morning after it chewed holes in some of the leaves. I hate those stinking snails! You have my permission to crush every one you see. Seriously, it's great to see you both back on trail! I'll be following along.

Great start! I loved the camp shots, we don’t usually get to see them, but they help you to see what it’s really like on a thru hike, (...and you have to set up camp every day before you get to sink into your bed!)
