The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Жыл бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress.com/CIY)
Fr. Mike examines the relationship between the Church and non-Christian religions. He discusses that while there is some degree of goodness and truth in every religion, the fullness of truth exists in the Catholic Church. Fr. Mike concludes with a reflection on the statement from the early Church Fathers that “outside the Church there is no salvation.” Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 839-848.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Over 100 years ago,my dad who was a strong Irish Catholic, held such strong feeling about people who were RC and really believed (as he was taught) that outside the Catholic Church there was NO salvation. However, after Vatican 11; he was much better informed and in the ten years prior to his death (2000), he realized what the words really meant. I’m now 82-and thank God every day for him and his sharing the faith with all his children. Prayers for Fr Mike and all my fellow travellers in Christ this day! 🙏🙏❤️🙏🇨🇦🇨🇦

Unfortunately, I am one of so many that have seen our children leave the faith. It is truly heartbreaking especially when thinking of the ramifications of their error. The only recourse I see is to constantly pray they be moved to come back to the Church. It seems to happen to so many families. and it is so sad.

I too am so saddened by my niece who has turned away from her faith and doesn't believe the doctrines of the Catholic church for all the same reasons. My mum always use to say to me when my brother stopped going to church"it's his soul he needs to worry about" so all we can do is pray that God will bring them back home. I pray for all who's families and relatives have turned away from their faith that God will comfort them and lead the lost back home🙏🙏🙏

The Jewish faith is already a response of God in the Old Covenant. For other non-Christian religions, the Catholic Church recognises that whatever is good or true in other religions comes from God and is a reflection of His truth. Outside the Church, there is no salvation unless someone who, through the dictates of conscience, sincerely seeks God and is moved by grace. Lord, help me to evangelize the unbeliever. Amen 🙏

Day 118..! If I had not been so crazy busy, I would have been asking prayers THEN, but will still ask today. On the day that I should have been listening to this, my ‘busyness’ happened because it was the first day of ‘SatanCon’, (I cannot believe Satanism is a ‘religion’) which was occurring on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 27, 28 and 29, 2023. I was in Adoration, Mass and countless rosaries to counteract the evil that was going on at the time. Thank You, Jesus that, at the same time, I was Sponsor for my grandson, being Confirmed into the Catholic Church. ❤❤❤❤ How sinful of me not to have asked for prayers at that time. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 We all need them in this time of unease. I CANNOT WAIT to hear you again. I am so blessed to have you leading me (us) through the Catechism. My apologies for having gone on and on. I am praying for all of you. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤

I struggled with a lot of this becoming Catholic from a Protestant and Jewish family;; what will happen to them? To my grandmother that was not Catholic but lived and walked with Christ daily and taught me to love Jesus above all things, but never took Holy Communion, non-Catholic. I love them all so deeply. I know their love of God. Their love of Jesus. their deep desire to do good. I finally had to say to myself (not to delude myself or to water down truth, which is very wrong to do) God is the absolutely perfect judge, full of light, truth, mercy, righteousness who even provided Jesus Christ to save mankind. In him all judgement is perfection; he knows every hair on our head at every moment of our life, he knows our thoughts, our actions, inactions, struggles and triumphs. God is not petty nor cruel, but just; his judgements can have no fault, so I trust in God to do right by each human being. I affirm and acknowledge that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light and no man comes to the Father except by him. I believe that the Catholic church has the fullness of salvation and is endowed with a special spiritual beauty that sustains me on my journey home. I trust that God will make the perfect end decision for each human being; in God there is no error. I trust in this. I hope I have that right.

Acts 2:38, 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise: belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off-to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.” End quote. 1 Corinthians 7:14, For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. b)Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. 7:14 b) If you were Jewish before Christ: Otherwise your children would be [ceremonially] unclean, but as it is they are holy. Fatima said to do the Rosary everyday. This is what you are doing FOR YOUR FAMILY.

Sounds right to me. I came to Catholicism late in life & the vast majority of my family is Protestant. God is perfect in His justice & mercy. He will dispose rightly in all of His decisions. Therefore I will, with great abiding hope, trust in the mercy of our Lord towards those, who through no fault of their own, were technically outside the Catholic Church, but can be saved by the faith of the Church through the presence, love, & mercy of Christ.🙏❤️

In the book "Look Who's Praying Now: Healing Unto the Nations," EL Enamorado explains God's daily devotion to hear all people's prayers of all religions. Now the plethora of prayers were too broad to contain is such an endeavor so a common thread was found and that thread was people's prayers for peace. This ubiquitous cry is a clarion call for all to dwell in peace with each other not just tolerating each other but respecting each other and celebrating our differences. Now is not the time to look at the world as Noah did with the testimony of the ark and the animals great and small entering the vessel yet the people laughed with mockery to their demise but now is the time to see all peoples as the children of God as their determination for peace makes them such as blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God. The Church is a testimony to the people's of the world for sure and the people do laugh and mock her yet she is more than the ark for true salvation come through her in her common mission with God that it is His will that none should perish. Many have simply said world peace is not attainable as even the Bible indicates and saints have echoed it's not possible but that doesn't mean we should not try for it may blossom into the peace of Christ that is beyond what the peace of the world can offer. We need only to give peace a chance.

This was a great balance of the importance of faith in Christ and the acknowledgement of God recognizing the genuine search that non-Christians can have to seek and know God as they understand Him. God told me early on regarding others: "You love them, I'll judge them." I'm at peace with that. I trust He knows our heart and will accept all who seek Love, since He IS Love.

Hi Father, I really wanted to share this with my Muslim friends. However, I can't do this now, because by putting devil worship next to their religion is so offensive. Having seen how devout Muslims live their lives praying without fail to God. Infact, recently while praying the rosary at my work place. More and more Muslims began to pray too. They were moved by the Holy Spirit. I was actually trying to encourage the 50% of Catholics to pray. I had 2 Catholics moved to pray. There were over 20 Muslims moved by the Spirit to pray. These were Muslims who hadn't been praying before.

I understand you find that offensive to them, but however the religion itself is full of evil yes and sadly most of Muslims are ignorant of that. May God guide them all

Jesus is my head and not me. Mary give me the humility not to capitulate to sin and lead explicitly or implicitly others down the road of perdition. God grant me the grace to be aligned perfectly to You, against my will and for Your will. In Jesus' name. Amen. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Give us the discernment to pick out the good and true things without dissolving into the bad and false things. Give us a joyful heart to shine this light in all we do and all we speak. Show me the way in and how to remain in Your Church connected to Your head as I go through each day o have left.🙏🙏🙏✨✨✨💗💗💗🌸🌸🌸

I haves not found the Catholic Church to be elitist, and I am sorry that is your experience. There is, though, so much to learn and understand about it….but it’s all been, in the end, so beautiful…praying you come to feel that way about it.

I love how Fr. Mike said people outside The Church are still trying to serve Christ to the best of their knowledge and to best of their ability. That's the way I've been thinking of protestant christians. I'm very thankful the Lord led me out of the man-made doctrine of Bible Alone. Looking at it from the outside it made absolutely no sense. Inspired Scripture is inspired by the writer, not the reader. To make the Word of God in written form my authority I was actually being my own authority. The Word of God in the flesh is my Authority now. And the teachings of Christ comes through the Apostles and Church Fathers. Most of which shows through in the Bible.

That horrid affirmation that we're all discussing tonight was certainly off-putting to me at first..but y'know, after reading thru all the comments this Community has left, the initial impact has seemed less threatening to me now. I feel so sad for those folks who would feel callous enough to turn their backs on Jesus at the last minute, knowing what alternative awaits them! However, should they be so insincere & say 'Yes' to Jesus, then that would easily be detected by our Lord & they'd be a goner anyway. This is one more set of people I'm adding to my prayer list that we might ALL enter into the Kingdom of Heaven! Praise You Jesus..Praise You! 🙏✝️🙇‍♀️🌟🕊💒

When the early Church preached that there was no salvation outside of the Church, it was the only Christian entity. The Jews would/ could not accept the New Covenant, although obviously there were many converts, like St Paul. The rest of the world was pagan. So the Church preached and went on preaching its message of the atoning death, Passion and Resurrection, of Jesus and the forgiveness of sin and the opening up of us to receive eternal life. I have always felt a strong connection to Judaism, because the foundations of our precious faith are to be found in the covenants, the law the prophets and their scriptures. But both Judaism and Islam regard Jesus as a prophet, a good man, a teacher, but not as the Son of the Living God. I add that many of my most faithful Spirit filled Christian friends are Protestant.
