I think for me a simple way that I've been practicing not being ashamed of the cross, is by making the sign of the cross every time I'm on public transport-taxi, uber, or bike, especially. At the beginning of my trip, I cross myself and say a little prayer for safety no matter how short the distance. I learnt this from my best friend and I encourage everyone to do it. 🙏🏾❤️

I've caught myself being ashamed of the cross. When I went back to school 5 years ago, I started praying as I walked to school, but then due to the people and traffic, when it came time to make the sign of the cross, I found myself turning away so I wouldnt be seen, and worse making like I had an itch on my head, shoulders, and heart as if to disguise it! Then one day I finally realized I was ashamed, I was acting in fear, and that it was counter to everything I had been taught my whole life growing up in the church. I was disgusted with myself. From that day on, I resolved to have no fear, that in fact making the sign of the cross when others could see me protects me, and shows others that I am not afraid to love Jesus!!!

That’s awesome. Grew up Catholic, but was never confirmed. 56 years old, and I’ve started praying the rosary. Did you do RCIA, and what’s that like? I was baptized as an infant, and went to catechism until I was about 12, so I don’t know how I’d go about getting confirmed.

I am 53 years old and was confirmed two weeks ago. I can testify personally that this is all true, although I hadn't seen it presented in such an inspiring and moving way until now. In two short weeks I have noticed a VERY significant shift in my life. I also put the time in to be there for and to listen and care for my relationship (for my evolving relationship with God, Jesus, and more recently Mary) in the same way I would for any relationship that I have for someone I love (i.e. my life companion or a parent or friend). Father Mike, during confirmation we stood in a line facing the congregation. I could see tall black figures standing behind many individuals and groups seated in front of me. I looked to the priest to see if he was seeing the same thing I was. He was off to the side baptizing a baby. It was darker all around him while light circled the baby and him. I understood that Jesus was being born again in the baby. I could tell the priest couldn’t see what I was seeing. A bible verse came into my head that “blessed are they who do not see but still believe.” I thought God must love him so much for working for Him without even seeing.

Thank you for this video Father Mike, I just had my last class for my RCIA, I have been confirmed on this year's Easter Vigil mass and it's nice to see a video about confirmations, what timing indeed haha. It's true about the Holy Spirit strengthening our faith in Christ, before I used to be ashamed for no particular reason of doing the cross in front of others, somehow I believed in this lie that I am making others uncomfortable for showing appreciation and act of belief in my God, in Jesus Christ Himself. After I joined the RCIA program, I started to pray more boldly in public before I consume any meals, or even just a drive out to a nearby area to pick up groceries or visit a friend or to work, I would have this habit of praying to God to join me and it reminds me that God is always with me no matter what. I pray to continue this habit as it is still a struggle, I have become better than I was before and hope to continue growing in Christ's strength. I was lapsed for over 20 years. I would call your local parish. Just say you're a lapsed Catholic and want to come home but don't know how to start. Your parish will know what to do. Getting back into the faith will probably involve meeting up with your parish priest, the sacrament of reconciliation, and you might be offered or ask for an orientation so you'll know when Mass is, where to go for the sacraments and services your church offers, who to call for what. My experience of coming back involved reconciliation, returning to weekly Mass, attending RCIA and receiving Confirmation to complete my long delayed initiation. I was welcomed warmly back and drawn into the bosom of the church. Don't be afraid, don't worry. Jesus loves you.

You could go on an overnight or day retreat at a monastery or abbey, if that is possible for you. The quiet time is helpful. Schedule a meeting with a priest so you have plenty of time. I wish I would have gone to RCIA, it is absolutely available. I would if I did it over. I think you will find priests to be incredibly merciful.

Ok so this happened to me about 1 week after me coming into the Church. My husband and I went to our previous church pastor to discuss some business we had going on with one of his members. After the pleasantries he said for us to say a word of prayer to start the discussion. I had grown so accustomed to having everyone saying " In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." in unison when crossing ourselves that when he started praying instantly in my mind I said, what we'er not making the sign of the cross. Then I remembered their not Catholic and by that time he said amen. So i just sat there 🙁. I have never allowed myself to be caught off guard again. From the time I know prayers are going to be said I cross myself in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit no matter if no one else is Catholic...I am Catholic and very happy to be also😊❤

I appreciate this look at what the Catechism says about Confirmation. I would agree that it's not quite the right wording to say young people who are confirmed have suddenly become "adults" in the Church. I think it's more precise to say that they have experienced the fullness of this sacrament of Christian maturity that enables them to participate in God's work. I remember being energized by a certain boldness after my Confirmation.

He is not ignoring you. Our God is a God that wants to see His children put forth effort. Ask yourself, what am I doing to gain wisdom? What am I doing to learn more about God, the Trinity, my faith? God answers all prayers in His time. Reflect on what you can be doing rather than waiting passively and impatiently to answer your prayer in your time.

Despite my best effort, understanding has yet to be achieved. You see, I’ve done all I can. At this point, the only way I’ll ever gain the understanding that I seek is with God’s help. Similar for me. Confirmation was my high point in practicing the faith. Afterward the consolation of prayer vanished, and my temptations grew much worse. It was like grace departed.

Questions Father, why the Catholic Church separate the baptism and confirmation? Unlike the Eastern Orthodox do it all at once. I felt nothing when I was confirmed. I had no idea what it meant. I was immature and self centered at that age. Just being honest.

All I got from Confirmation was guilt, anxiety, and servile fear. Took awhile to manifest, but I definitely didn't have them before that.

That's called scrupulosity. I'd say it's pride more than anything. Man up and humble yourself to Jesus. You have guilt because you choose to keep your guilt instead of giving it to Christ. That's on you brother, not the Church.

@@Veritas1234 Being afraid of eternal conscious torment is pride? Neat. I try to give Jesus my guilt and despair in confession regularly. He doesn't take them.

@@leoncaruthers I was there too brother. Do you go to therapy? A priest told me to go to therapy as my penance and it changed my life.
