I think having people to practice with is the main reason I was successful at learning German at school. It’s easier to learn and remember things when you have a memory of a conversation attached, too. You also learn things you wouldn’t have otherwise, like colonialisms and subtle differences like ‘let me know’ as opposed to ‘tell me’. The subtle differences in meaning between words are also often only clear in context.
