That last part about Job resonated with me today! I have a disabled friend whose husband of 38 years left her and it's an ugly mess. She still chooses to be overtly kind to him. Mostly I just listen and bite my tongue at the things he's done. I've been struggling with whether or not I should give any opinions, and now I have my answer! My tongue may start bleeding soon but I will continue to just listen like Job's friends. Thanks Fr. Mike!

There was this guy who used to walk down the boardwalk in Maryland who would carry a wooden cross on his shoulder and recite “Repent...give yourself up to the Lord...Repent...give yourself up to the Lord...you could hear him even if he was far away as he honored the Lord... he was a flip and I’ll never forget that man...he got not so friendly looks, you name it however he boogied on down that boardwalk for hours daily carrying his cross and honoring his Savior. God Bless that sweet soul. Amen. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I find the story of Job immensly important. First: It shows that bad stuff can happen to good people and it's not a punishment from God - because Satan is active as well. And in the course of our history, people have often forgotten this and seen catastrophes as punishments from God and have persecuted others they deemed "guilty" or "sinful" to please God. But in the BASICS of our religion, it says "No. It can have different causes as well." But furthermore: The reactions of Jobs friends show original sin at work in the most brutal way: What they say is not 'technically' wrong, and it sounds so wise. It sounds like some of the Psalms or Proverbs. But we know it isn't .. quite right either. Why? Because we want to 'be like God and judge/know good and evil' but we lack God's love, God's justice and God's vision. Eating the fruit is like being a toddler who grabs a kitchen knife. The kitchen knife isn't evil. The kitchen knife is good and useful ... not in the hands of a toddler though...

Day 16 - Jan 16,2024. Prayers going up for everyone involved in producing BIAY, & everyone listening.🙏❤️ Very mysterious happenings in today’s reading. Rachel steals household idols but doesn’t get caught. Why not? Jacob wrestles with a mysterious Angel & neither one wins. Why? Jacob also gets a name change; always big news when God changes someone’s name. He’s now known as Israel & we see the beginnings of the nation. God bless 🙏❤️

Can you imagine wrestling with God, what would that have looked like for Jacob? just minding his own business, sorting his life out , then this angel shows up and wants to pick a fight. My commentary says he had struggled with Esau and Laban, now as he was about to re enter Canaan he was shown that his wrestle now was with God. God had his destiny in his hands. I wrestle with God verbally sometimes, He is very patient with me, keeps bringing me back to the scriptures, praise God I am not limping!

I’m praying for everyone who is studying with Fr Mike and for you too are Mike - and please if I may humbly ask you to pray for me as I’m doing both the Catechism in a year and the Bible in a year simultaneously- so far I have fallen behind a couple of times but back on track today. You know, over the last 17 years I have had a deep reversion to my Catholic faith, and I know that after Pope John Paul II died, the Holy Spirit led me in such a way that I began drawing closer to Jesus. I was raised Catholic by a Catholic dad and a Protestant mom who married in the Catholic Church in 1956- and my mom promised to raise us all in the Catholic faith which she did. What my mom and dad never let on to me and my younger and older sisters was that they were sort of alienated from both sides of the family because a marriage between a Catholic and a Protestant at that time was not accepted. Yet growing up, they maneuvered around those things and just showed us love and respect. Later in life I found out that my mom had never attended one of our baptisms, yet she kept her promise of raising us in the Catholic faith. In fact, she sent me my dad’s rosary after he died and also purchased a rosary for me when she went on a pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in 2012. While I went to Mass on Sunday, I was what you would have called a cafeteria Catholic for so many years. Yet we know in scripture Matthew 9:12 “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.” Our mom and dad lost our youngest sister to a brain tumor after a 7 year battle with that just before her 21st birthday, and lost me and my older sister when we both moved far away from them after nursing school. They were married for 51 years before my dad passed away from lung cancer and my mom passed away after a leaking aneurysm in her chest stopped leaking and she lived for 5 more months at home as me and my older sister who really don’t get along worked together to take care of her. And as I am looking back on my life I can see how the hand of God has been there with all of our family every step of the way. He gave me a mom and dad who taught me about diversity, about how there are some Protestants like my mom who honor Mary mother of God, who honor the promises made to God through the Catholic Church. And I’m so grateful God gave me the family he did to teach me those things that I’m still learning but come back to a couple of things - humility and love. So as we all journey together my prayer for all of you is that you will open wide the eyes of our hearts to the great love God the Father has for us all, and that as we study the Word of God and learn about the teachings of the Catholic Church we may place our lives in his hands to do with as he willed our lives on this earth, to go out to the whole world and spread the good news and when necessary use words, to love God, to love Jesus, to love our blessed Mother, to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit that is the love shared between the Father and the son and to truly love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen. God bless you all!😊❤️🙏

As someone who has been fighting an aggressive cancer for the past year and a half, I have been more fortunate than others who suffer the same illness and others who are suffering different illnesses. Sometimes there are no words. Sometimes it really is just our presence in each other's lives. Sometimes the greatest thing one can do is say to the other person, "I do not know truly what you are going through, and I won't pretend to. But I am here. You're not alone."

Thanks again for making this podcast. I can't even imagine all the work that goes into these videos including reading, analysis, recording, subtitling, editing, and more and I am so grateful that you have put all of this together. As always, it is truly a highlight of my evening and has provided me with much-needed direction going into 2022. Genesis 31 tells the story of Jacob and Laban. God tells Jacob to return to his homeland and Jacob claims that Laban has cheated him. God made sure that Jacob's animals mated successfully. Rachel and Leah agree to return to Jacob's homeland under God's provision. Rachel stole some household "gods" from her father Laban leading Laban to pursue them. Laban accuses Jacob of deceiving him and searches Jacob's gods. Rachel manages to hide the gods from Laban. When Laban finds nothing, Jacob reprimands him. They form a covenant with God as their witness. One possible message of this chapter is that when we are under God's provision, He will look out for us and protect us from potential deception. This provision allowed Jacob to avoid being cheated further. This reminds me of an earlier reading from this podcast where you mentioned how God's provision works even when we are unaware. Genesis 32 tells the story of Esau coming to meet his brother Jacob. Jacob prepares by dividing his household into two companies in case Esau attacks them. Jacob gives Esau a gift of large flocks of animals. Later Jacob sleeps on the Jabbok river until an angel comes and wrestles with him until daybreak. Jacob forces the angel to bless him. The angel gives Jacob the name Israel because he has striven with God and prevailed over people. This is the origin of the name of the Biblical nation of Israel. Job 21 tells another of Job's monologues where he questions the nature of suffering. Job discusses how some of the wicked find prosperity ("mighty in power") in spite of their wickedness. As a result, Job suggests that God allows the wicked to prosper. He wonders how God can allow the wicked to prosper and the righteous to suffer. Finally, Job challenges his friend's platitudes once again. As always, Job voices many concerns I have thought about over the years. I appreciate your answer that suffering can be a means for repentance or gathering wisdom but in the case of Job it may be the result of something beyond our understanding, something we cannot offer as an answer. I hope to learn more about the nature of suffering as we enter the second half of Job. Job 22 tells Eliphaz's third rebuttal to Job. Eliphaz asks if the righteous are "profitable to God." He suggests Job has been wicked, even insinuating Job has "withheld bread from the hungry" among other things. Eliphaz repeats Job's concerns about the contrast between the wicked and the righteous and God's provision of both types of people. Eliphaz instructs Job to repent and become righteous with God again. Once again, Eliphaz's words have lots of truth in them but as you said, they may not be the best way to comfort Job in this time of suffering. Proverbs 3:9-12 has two pieces of wisdom. The first instructs us to offer our first fruits to the Lord. This could be the lesson of the story of Cain and Abel where God favored Abel's offering because Abel offered his first fruits. The second instructs us not to despise "the Lord's discipline" because the Lord loves us just as a father loves his son but is forced to reprimand him. This could be the trap Job has fallen into, as he has constantly questioned the Lord's discipline throughout the book of Job. In the past I have blamed my troubles on others instead of seeing it as the Lord's discipline. I hope I can use my suffering in the future to find some wisdom in our broken world. Day 16 - 1/16/2022

Repentance for the consequence of sins or deep wisdom are the fruits of suffering. Job was righteous and he had no reason to suffer. We shouldn't say that "Maybe it's God's will". Silence is indeed golden. Jacob's troubles with Laban were consequences of his treatment of Esau but Jacob could still correct his mistake. We must learn, reflect, pray, and do our best to follow God when faced with difficulties. The night is the darkest before dawn. Thank you, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension. God Bless

Wow. I can say first-hand that God DOES allow suffering in our lives sometimes to shut us up and listen to Him through the Holy Spirit. A couple of years ago I was confined to my home for several months because I could not walk and was waiting to get a hip replacement. Thank God for the internet. I found many sources of inspiration, not the least of which was Fr. Mike's short talks on Ascension Presents (thanks for being there for me Fr. Mike!) And as I was waiting, I went from "Woe is me" to "I'm scared to death" to "God help me!" Long story short, over those months of fear and prayer to Anointing of the Sick, God DID show me that He is ALWAYS there and to trust in His will is to never to be afraid. It's so true! Happy to say that my surgery went without a hitch and I'm doing well. Never waste suffering - God is there with you more than ever!

As Father Mike suggests we can be there for one another in this community, not just read alone. The best thing we can do is also as Job's friends had done first. Just sit together in silence and pray.....because as you say there are no answers sometimes, sometimes the answer will be found in Gods permissiveness not in the perfection of God's plan. And sometimes the companions we have in our life assume like Jobs companions did when they finally did speak...that we need to repent for we must have done something wrong to receive the plight we receive. More than likely I find in the end that I am not the righteous person that Job was and so it is right that I received from God the permissiveness of evil to plague me,, but that does not mean it is always so either.... And so we can sit together in silence and pray for one another....🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Lord, Help us to always be discerning of truth vs. lies. Wake us up in areas of our life where we need repentance and teach us wisdom. Thank you for not predicating our righteousness by our own efforts, but how we respond to your son’s own suffering on our behalf.
