Vishwanath was a treat to watch. Real hero of that era when no helmets were used.

I know Gavasker was the more reliable scorer and the greater batsman, but it was Vishwanath - little Vishy - that I most enjoy watching from this era of Indian cricket. His silky skills and deftness of touch were a delight. He was especially adept at shots that have fallen out of fashion in cricket now : the late cut and the leg glide using the pace of the ball played late and with quicksilver wrists. I was fortunate enough to be at The Oval in 1979, as a schoolboy age 14, to watch India's exciting fourth innings run chase where they came so close to beating England. I remain convinced that if India's skipper Venkat had sent Vishwanath in sooner than he did that day, victory would have been India's

Indeed it was the first Test played for the ACB, and the start of WSC. The Australians bringing back Bobby Simpson to captain a seriously underdone team. Thommo couldn't break his 4IP radio contract that he signed for a record amount of $633,000,10year contract in 75/76. He became the highest paid cricketer of the day. Hence he vice captained the team for this particular 77/78 season. This also the year after his busted shoulder at Adelaide v Pakistan, and subsequent tour of England with Greg Chappell's losing team, 3-1. Thats when WSC was first reported in the media,and everything got ugly. Unfortunately for Australia we never got to see Lillee and Thomson at their peak again,save for intermittent further games over the next 6 or 7 years.Usually in occasional one day games when they only bowled 10 overs each. I remember it all as it was yesterday. Thanks for the great upload and cheers:))

Brijesh Patel should have played the 3/4/5 and not 1 and 2. Test. His career ended at Perth. Second test . He scored 3 and 27 last innings. He played for India for 3 years only. Brijesh Patel career was over at the age of 25. Very sad. Great Fielder and goid stroke player. Consistency was the big issue. But pkayed very well against West Indies and New Zealand . 25:47

@stuartfraser18564 жыл бұрын
Thomson had an existing contract and his employer refused to release him to play for Packer. The legal negotiations to extract him took so long he missed the first Packer season and in the meantime he continued to play "official" matches.

Mr. Galagali, one more observation: This IS the first ever video on KZbin (that I found) which shows Brijesh Patel batting. Brij was a favorite cricketer in my youth. In domestic cricket he was more aggressive and more consistent than Vishwanath but he could not make it at Test level. This video shows the flaws in his technique (and that of Mankad) facing top quality pace bowling, a major problem for several Indian domestic stalwarts during that time.

Vasudeva Rao No, this isn’t the first. Brijesh is handsomely captuted in the 1974-75 WI match played in Bombay. We also see him being kissed upon reaching 50! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXzGnJ2XnJaahrM

Gavaskar was playing his first test for India in Australia, had come to Australia after 6 years in 1977-78. He was approached by Packer yet refused offer of Packer inspite of being paid poorly by BCCI in those years. Chauhan, Mohinder, Vengsarkar, Kirmani, Vishwanath, Madan Lal, Ghavri, Mankad, Patel were playing their first test in Australia via Gabba test of 1977-78 series, they had zero prior playing experience on Australian conditions, it was a weak tourist team from India because majority of it's members had zero prior playing experience on Australian conditions. Homeside Australia was the strong side as each member of that side may be debutant to international test cricket but had much more prior playing experience on home or Australian conditions compared to that of counterparts from tourists Indian team, homeside Australia was expected to win by 5-0 vs tourists India playing with as high as 3 spinners on Gabba, Perth and rest of the three tests, lacking good fast bowlers. Still tourists India won 2 out of those 5 tests. Packer Circus Loyals like Lillee, Chappell, Marsh, Walters were overrated, they played for homeside Australia in 1981 series of 3 tests vs tourists India of captain Gavaskar, another weak tourist team having first time visitors to Australia like Sandeep Patil, Doshi, Yadav, Kapil and Yashpal. But homeside Australia loaded with Packer Circus Loyals failed to win that 1981 test series which ended in 1-1 level disappointing many who had expected 3-0 win vs tourists India.

The Gabba was such a fabulous ground to watch cricket in those days...open and breezy, big Moreton Bay fig trees for shade...the voices of the kids selling pies, drinks and ice creams echoing around...these days, it's murder in that stadium, so hot and barely any cool breeze...good for Australian rules played at night in the cooler months...but they ruined it for cricket...

Bedi and a few others had played against Simpson in his farewell series in 1967-68 and got whitewashed 4-0 I expect they would have been quite surprised to come back to Australia for their 1st tour in 10 years and play against the same captain.

Compare the lovely opening music that was afforded with the Australian telecast compared with the pedestrian ones that you provide at the start of some of your videos. While the batsmen rectify their stance as per the prevailing playing conditions, I request you to rectify your musical stance that is primarily aimed at attracting crude public attention. This ought not to be.
@JaiGalagali Жыл бұрын
Yes, agree with your observation. These were the early uploads when I would pick a tune popular around the prevailing times. Will remove. I I later changed the theme music something that has a global appeal.

Probably the worst batting line up that Australia ever fielded in a test match! A third XI . The 1st and 2nd XI were playing WSC Packer circus cricket.
