The first one is decent with the rent, utilities, and internet it sounds like housing cost will be between $700 to 800 USD. You gonna have to fund income of $2,000 USD a month to live comfortable and travel unless you deep into your savings. For me personally Cebu City with infrastructure, housing, restaurants and internet and convenience of getting to other islands offers better value. Good luck!

I agree. I live in Metro Manila but when I went to Cebu a few years back, it was the first place I said to myself that I can see myself living in. I love Bacolod too.

We had a wall unit A/C in our bedroom in our in-laws house on Luzon. It was extremely loud, dirty, and drew a lot of electricity. See if they will install a Split A/C unit in your bedroom (the compressor portion of the unit is located outside the house). We had one installed in our bedroom over there. It made a huge difference in the our quality of life. It cut our monthly electricity costs in half, ended the constant rooster noise, and filtered out dust in the air much better. We slept better at night. It was cool, dry, and without noise. It can get very hot and humid over there! Also make sure the electricity is wired for your place only. You could end up paying for someone else’s electricity. Have them show you the electric meter. One meter might be hooked up to several units…..something to think about. My mother in laws house had a cousin next door wired to her house. I’m not sure how you handle property leases over there, but I am sure that it is way different from Canada. Keep in mind that you may want to leave early on your 1 year lease idea. How do they handle deposits, lease breaking, etc? I personally would not expect to get any deposits back on your departure.

the first house, that needs air conditioning and is 20,000 pesos per month, complete with the garden and the roosters, seems to be very typical of where I live in Panama as well. the moment that the house is weathered in, they concentrate completely on making it as livable as possible on the inside. new tile, fixtures, lighting, all of the amenities of a completely finished house. while the outside still looks like it was built yesterday, with no fit or finish whatsoever. it may seem strange to westerners, but it is extremely practical. the important part of the dwelling is that the people on the inside enjoy the space, far more than what the outside happens to look like.

I bet ya if you made a strong enough haggle, you'd get that at P15k/month. In Metro Manila, decent middle class gated subdivisions, a lot of much, much nicer houses can be had for P15K. You should've tried one month first just to be able to have that settled in feeling. When the pressure is gone, your minds are clear, you will really know by then what you really want. As for the airconditioning, try if you can get them to buy a reliable and known brand. Because if they buy a cheap one and it conks out, you'll be trying to cool down using electric fans.

If you can't find there, try Siargao and other island provinces with lots of tourist spots beaches like Negros, Cebu, Bohol, etc. There are still so many beautiful Islands that you need to know and explore (with great potential for doing resorts business). Local Filipinos called Boracay as "One of the most Expensive Island" in Philippines along with the Pamalican Island (Amanpulo). And Boracay nowadays is already packed with small and big Businesses that's why the land and hotel rentals there is more than 2x higher to other Islands and it is also because that area is world known for tourists. Expensive prices is just normal there especially if you'll love to stay in Class A areas... Sure you can find one there---lesser than 20k a month (good, clean, safe but not in hotspot areas like you need to walk or ride for couple of mins to main beaches), be safe with your travels...

A bit of unsolicited advice. Talk to the owners as much as possible. You usually talk to caretakers. Normally, they won't be able to explain the merits of the place well. And you can make arrangements faster with the owners themselves if its at all possible.

I’ve never been to Boracay, but that place seems overly expensive and those places don’t look that great. For comparison, I live in MAA, Davao City and my rent, in a nice quiet neighborhood, 2 big beds, 1 bath, huge separate kitchen, large living room, laundry room and a giant front lanai is only $257. Plus, it’s totally furnished and the owner pays the WIFI. Honestly, I think you could find much nicer areas to settle for a year. I hope you don’t get to bored there. Also, Boracay, as you probably already know, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. It could get really hectic there. And the amenities situation is very limited. I hope it all works out though for you guys. Safe travels🤙 Haha! So I watched till the end and see you are taking the first place. Nice! I tell ya, Negotiate a fridge and hot plate. That way your not stuck leaving it all there after a year. I can guarantee that they want your money and they won’t say NO!

@M J I’ve lived in Davao for 4 years and there’s lots of expats that live here. Not once in my time have I heard one person mentioned that. Also, Davao City for tourists isn’t the greatest place. It’s not a city with lots of nice beaches close by. The biggest attraction is Samal Island.

Boracay is not the only beautiful Island to live in the PI. The Philippines consists of over 7000 island in the archepelago. Over 2600 are inhabited. Anywhere you live, from Luzon, to Visayas and Mindanao are beautiful beaches. I live in Lipa City Batangas where just a short drive are some of the most beautiful beaches in rhe PI at a fraction of the cost of Boracay. Very few brownouts, cheap food, rent, utilities and typhoons and all the malls and shopping centers without the congestion of Manila. Remember this, you can get to ANY beach or island by bus ferry or plane without having to get stuck rationing water and paying the higher cost of food, electricity and rent. Living on Boracay, or Puerta Galera or any of the tourist spots have their own challenges. Much more than living in Luzon or Cebu.
