We raise red and blue heelers. I have read that the dog uses the tail for a counterbalance with real sharp changes in direction. I've owned and worked heelers for 35 years. Never had a tail stepped on or crushed. I think people do it for looks. We dock tails when the new owners ask us to. There is a dog called the stumpy tailed cattle dog that resembles a heeler but naturally has no tail. Aussies have longer hair then their cousins the heeler so maybe it would be good to keep the dingleberries off.

To the people Who say its Cruel doing it like this. Its the same at vet just done with a tool more like a cigar cutter. they do use a medical supper glue to seal the tail at vet though. Our Girl only had one puppy this time, and do to the years and years of tail docking done in her line. We have had puppy's born with no tails, curly tails, zig zag tails, and half tails. These malformed tails can be painful after fully developing. Our current pups tail is extra skinny on lower half with a curly tip. He has high risk of tail pain if left undocked! p.s. Our girl had one pup due to missing best date for them to tie. Our Boy kept missing on the right day lol! Thanks for the video seeing the scissors you use makes me confident mine will be fine.

i vote keep the tails unless you are on a farm with cattle or is required for a show dog. I think an argument can be made no tail = less poop on the fur. However most dogs raise the tail anyway. besides who doesn't love grabbing a dogs tail or seeing it wag, its like your dog is talking to you. Dogs' tails have a number of different purposes, including aiding balance, fending off insects, and increasing or minimising scent. And just as humans use body language to communicate emotion, so do dogs. The wag of a dog's tail can communicate a great deal about how a dog is feeling, both to other dogs and to humans.

A lot of clints want things done a specific way which wouldn’t be a problem however people request certain things then decide to cancel on said puppy, making it practically impossible for breeders to find a replacement home therefore that’s most breeders choose to do what’s standard to that breed unless the client is prepared to pay in full as soon as the puppy is born ( non-refundable ) .The client would need to choose a puppy immediately and that is extremely difficult for clients and breeders, breeders prefer to wait until the puppies have gotten older before allowing clients choose. Another important factor is your position on the waiting list therefore a client may need to wait for a future litter allow them to have first pick.

I just have two questions, have you ever had any puppies die from this procedure? I'm in Lakewood, Colorado and haven't been able to find local vets that will do this for the tail and dew claws. There was vet that would do the tails, dew claws and ears. He did our dogs ears for a good 25 years but he retired and deserved to so, he was fairly old when he retired. I had a boxer give me a litter back in the mid 80's and there was no problem finding a vet to do the dew claws and tails. I have only had male boxers after the female that whelped that littler died and she lived 13 years that is pretty good for boxers. Now I have an 8th month old male boxer puppy that so far has outstanding confirmation and he is really smart and obedient with champion blood lines. I have put a downpayment on a female pup and I plan on breeding the two. So thanks to this video and a few others I probably will do the docking of the tails and dew claws myself. I have no problem with a vet doing that should I be able to find one. And my second question is; have you ever done boxer puppies?

I have one myself, and we live in a small home and take her on three long walks a day. I totally get what you mean by the above, better early than late! But in my opinion, better never than ever. It has been a pretty controversial topic about how many dogs actually lose their tails to cows. What I personally believe, is that the dog uses its tail for so many purposes, including balance when running, expressing emotions, and has even been proven to be used when interacting with other dogs. The reason that dogs naturally have a lighter color underneath their tail, is so that they can flag down other dogs and ultimately reflect how they are feeling. Nevertheless, we don't know how much pain is inflicted so I fully agree with doing it younger if you're going to. Good day, and this is just my opinion, nothing meant to be personal : )

Dogs with long bandy tails or tails that are thin on not protected with fur are highly susceptible to damages and brakes, dogs that work or hunt are also put in situations that can put their tails at risk. Docking is a preventative procedure that usually occurs within the time range of the puppies first days therefore there is little to no pain as well as them not being able to remember it. Just like when you get vaccinated as a baby or get a tongue tie snipped. If tail docking is preformed on a dog older than a few days eg a couple months old then the dog will be put under anaesthetic and given strong pain meds for healing.

Since not all individual pups in any given litter is guranteed to be of breed standard worthy of showing or have the talent to be out working actual physical livestock herds, where tail docking in either show or working livestock herds has its place, my thoughts are A: if the docked tail look is what is disired, why not just go for those breeds that have naturally short or no tails to begin with, if the former is desired, would the already short tail be docked to be even more short? B : If tail docking comes into play with for show/registration purposes, keeping in mind not all individual pups in any given litter will be of breed standard furthering onto a show career or the talent to go out and work livestock, why dock all pups tails in the litter? Why not select a few potential showdogs at least, dock their tails, keep the rest entire, de-sex and sell the rest when weaned or there after? Curious thats all as i thought tail docking only served a purpose for future show dogs and dogs that are actually working livestock not just for dogs who for whatever reason can't/won't be shown or go out and be a working livestock dog.

I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but docking and cropping should both be a Class 1 felony (as should breeding, but that's a different argument altogether). Contrary to popular belief, it IS painful, and they feel every second of it. You wouldn't take a human baby and just cut off a toe or a finger without a good reason or painkiller, would you? No? Animals are no different. And no, I'm not one of those wack jobs who tries to force everyone to their beliefs about animals, but that doesn't mean I don't oppose torture, either. And that's exactly what docking and cropping is, no matter how people try to justify it.

@@mineonlyedwardcullen dew claws are removed and tails are docked on most hunting/working dogs. If it is not done then they can have a very serious dew claw injury out in the brush if it gets caught on something. Ive seen a dog need its whole paw amputated because of a severe dew claw tear. if their tails are not docked they will beat them bloody once theyre on prey and then you can have very serious complications and end up with a huge vet bill and then the dog has to have their tail amputated anyway. This SHOULD be done within their 1st 48 hours after birth, their nerves have not fully developed. Im not gonna lie, they do still feel it, im sure its not pleasant but if it's done early and well, there is very minimal pain because their nerves are not fully developed yet. Yes it does still hurt a little but its very minimal. They go through 2minutes of pain so that hopefully they'll have a lifetime free of injuries. Usually Within 5 minutes theyre back to sleep or nursing. The "screams" are not pleasant, and some whine/cry more than others, but they wont feel/remember it 5mins down the road if done correctly. Hope you're well, stay safe.
