Day 20: Mixolydian Mode - 30 Day Guitar Challenge

Next up in our modal mini-course-within-a-course, Mixolydian. I would venture to say that if you're only going to remember three modes it should be Ionian, Aeolian, and Mixolydian. Why? Well, it just comes up so stinkin' much in music...
So much so that I don't even have to tell you the artists when I count through the hit songs in Mixolydian. Let's see how many of these songs you know by title alone:
• "Paperback Writer"
• "Manic Depression"
• "Fire"
• "Reelin' in the Years"
• "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough"
• "Norwegian Wood"
• "Saturday Night's Alright"
• "My Generation"
Pretty good list, eh? Yeah, and I could go on and on. Point is, you need to have Mixolydian in your toolkit, and that's exactly what we're going to cover in today's lesson.

Thanks for the series! Practicing with the drone note (key of E) has been really ear-opening as a reference. Gives it better context than the 6 string patterns with the constant tonal center. This has been really helpful!

Flat 7 is tay in solfège. I find singing the proper flat/sharp syllables puts the difference in your ear better. Great series.

Another great tutorial! I think of “Mix” as the “Norwegian Wood” mode which is where I learned it. Joe Bonamassa’s “Mountain Time” is a great example, Marcus King “Devil's Land” and "Dyin" are other favorites. The mysterious major!

I hope all these tutorials never get taken down. This would be so helpful to practice every day like you said for 30 days I’m gonna try it. Thank you so much for posting these as a player of 15+ years. I’ve mainly been rhythm and always scared to dive into lead, but always felt uncomfortable, so hopefully this will help.

12 notes, 7 modes... I've decided to make 84 flash cards Title, pattern, notes, flats, frets Memorizing them all. Making them my tools. Extended goal for this year.

very good lessons on the modes , ;however' what I don't see is how the different modes are used with their corresponding chords , and within a chord progression. Because all modes are part within the same key . which you don't seem to explain. otherwise these are very helpful lessons . But again i haven't seen how you use them

These modes lessons are meant to be an introduction centered around ear training. Learning the tonality of the modes this way will make them more useful in the long run. Later in the series when we cover improvisation you’ll see this in action.
