Thankyou. You gave me the incentive to tweak some of my storage! I removed a false panel of the vanity cabinet l use in my sewing room, and installed drawer glides within. Hubby used my measurements and made a box as my drawer. Then l screwed false panel to the box and added a knob. Now l have a shallow drawer perfect for my applique press sheets and FPP papers. Beneath that was the " black hole" of a cupboard that l couldn't access without getting on my knees, l installed a pull out set of slides to bottom and fitted it with a plywood platform with shallow side/ back pieces ( keep things from falling off) . Now it pulls out so l can see my mini bolts of backing. 🙂

Hi Karen.i have enjoyed this so much inspiring me to declutter & resew some of my many Christmas Decs!!! Far too many that come out of loft each year decluttered! The sewing room awaits February Challenge! A disability makes life challenging & slow… but your cube timer is a winner. Thank you so much for getting me going.

Thank you for this year's Challenge. My sewing corner isn't ideal - it's tiny for a start - but it is a lot better organised now and I'm sure that next year will see yet more decluttering and reorganising. My aim for this year, once I've got my projects out of the way, is to tackle my very small fabric stash and actually use it. I'll be 62 this year, not ancient, but I am aware that time to get to make and wear that amazing jacket, new nightgown and finally make my William Morris bedspread is steady running down....not meant to be morbid, but is meant to give me a kick up the backside! Happy sewing :) xx

What a great concept, thank you for sharing, I really appreciate the fact that you're working so hard so you can help me. It does feel like you're doing this just for me, as your advice and everything your share seems so authentic and real (i.e. it actually works). I've also applied your organization strategies, that's why I'm not working that hard at decluttering.

Thank you so very much for all of your wisdom. My husband and I share a workspace. One end is his tools and work bench, along with a commercial sewing machine that he uses more than I do. The other end is my sewing area. I do not have a lot of fabric, but what I do have is stored in 7"h x 11"w x 16" l. These units stack very well, but invariably, the box I needed was at the bottom of the stack. As you were talking about making your sewing triangle user friendly, I realized that one of my biggest issues was needing to remove more than one box to get to the box I needed. Pull them out, set them down, move everything around and put it all back. Not the end of the world, but certainty not efficient. With little effort, we added more shelves. One box per shelf height. Can't tell you how much better this is! This is the third year I have done this challenge. I can honestly say it influences all of my sewing area and often other areas of my home. Your inspiration is contagious and fulfilling. Wishing you only the best in 2025.❤

I went back and did my ironing stuff and hand sewing stuff today. Tomorrow is stabilizers etc. I still need a good place to keep my project bins. I am slowly replacing the crappy bins my mom used for scrapbooking that have worn opening clasps with the good art bin bins with separate clasps and handles. They are a bit pricier but I think they will wear well. I think I will get hubby to build a custom shelf unit where I can store them.

Thank you Karen, I am just a bit behind on the challenge but will be done in a day or 2. My hardest part was weeding out the "I want to make that in the future" folder and move many into the 'I adore that but could never make it without a major health, equipment, and skills upgrades" folder 😉 I'm feeling refreshed and excited. I took your advice to heart to use it in other areas of my life 😁 which has had me designing a 21 day challenge for my 'messiest, worst jumbled, unstructured, inefficient' pastime - my genealogy research. Computer files, duplicate or edited computer files, extra files, extra info, paper files, picture boxes jumble of genealogy info. WAY too many Squirrels and Rabbit holes. I used info from other sources and your general logic of planning a workable approach (short tasks and a timer to stay on track, 'week one' cleaning - making space and choosing appropriate locations, put things away properly, 'week 2' tools- consolidating items from everywhere checking it is 'functional', finding what may be needed to work better, putting it away properly and where it is needed, 'week 3' projects - sorting, identifying tasks, prioritizing, prioritizing more, dropping ones I will never do, setting reachable goals and a short list of TOP do tasks . I'm on day 3 of that challenge. I've had to make a few tweaks to the plan already, but we'll see how it goes.

Our quilt guild did a decluder of sorts. In early October I was watching the news. This was just a couple days after Hurricane Helena hit North Carolina. We did a hurricane relief project. Asking for fabrics form each of our fabric sash. A great abundance of fabrics were donated. A new, but easy pattern was developed. We started making kits, and the sewing began. Some members searched thete finished quilts. Outer guilds in the area donated to our big project. When all was said and done, we had collected 114 quilts ready to ship on the day after Thanksgiving. It was fun and stressful at the same time.

My sewing/office/craft/library/hangout room is in dire need of a re-vamp, and you give me a great framework to think through it all without getting overwhelmed! On the bright side, in the fall I'd finally pulled out and donated (to our neighborhood elementary school, and to Goodwill) craft and office supplies that I was never going to use -- it took many years to come to that realization. That donation was supposed to be the start of the Big Re-Vamp, but as you said, slow and steady wins the race!

I volunteer at a thrift store and we have a huge bin where unusable clothing or bedding, and any textiles we get that mIght be too small to put out, all goes into that bin for recycling. Some goes to third world countries, and some gets cut up into rags and the rest gets chopped up to get recycled (maybe mixed with plastics to make those reusable shopping bags) It’s a great way to donate that stuff you don’t want. Just be sure to check with the store first because if they don’t do that, then it is garbage if they can’t use it and they have to pay to get rid of it. All of our proceeds go to our local food bank.

I definitely thought not much to do. Wrong. I have been weeding out long held things that I just never will get to, magazines, patterns etc. I grabbed a drawer full of orphan blocks and put them all together. It sounds awful but I make these as quilts for when family quilts. They are fireside or beach quilts. I make sure everybody knows they are to USED. We'll this year I have enough for two. They are going to a homeless shelter. Although I have lots of things I would like to make for me, I am deciding it is time I used up those strips I cut from scraps and I will make quilts for hospice or another charity. I have mostly scraps in my sewing room. I am going to stop taking them from others until I get the amount down. I will always make scrap quilts but the output has to get more even with input! I am going to try some of Karen's scrap busting quilts for chatity projects. I feel less burdened ... again. I work best in a neat, organized space and I have never had a terrible mess, but I do not like overflowing drawers and shelf space. In these times of ever increasing expense, it is time to use up what I have and buy less patterns and fabric. I wish you all joy, good health and many blessings every day!!

But every day I do something. I have been overwhelmed with all I have. I am not buying any more fabric or patterns until I can finish four quilt backs. The fronts have been done for years. My after quilts are holding up finishing the quilt. I decided I am not going to make After Quilts for awhile after finish these four. I love making After Quilts. This year, my efforts were much more comprehensive -fine tuning some of the steps I couldn't do fully in earlier years. I'll be a day or two to finish off my fabric sort but the load has been lifted. I have some reorganising to do but I’ve decluttered, it’s a case of swapping around where things are stored. My fabric is sorted as are my threads, notions etc. I’ve got fabric and yarn to go to our local monthly green market where all the money made goes back into community groups and all my craft supplies I no longer want are going to the local brownies. (Junior version of girl guides) It actually made getting rid of them much easier than donating to a charity shop or throwing in the garbage because they won’t take opened craft supplies.

Yet again you have taken me through a journey with good and bad days. My work space looks and more importantly feels amazing. I now have a laundry basket of scraps that require ironing and cutting, which is left over from the scrap day I ironed and cut. I will be taking it in spurts, which I learned from you is doable for a task that is overwhelming. It will take another week for me, but I have a plan! Thank you for this annual clearing out. I think there is little to do and then as I get into it I realize I don't keep up as well as I thought. The other benefit is at least once a year my shelves are cleared and cleaned well. My projects and inspirations are in a notebook and I will be making plans on a calendar for getting them done. I did part with an unfinished project that I just kept putting back in the closet. Because of your questions to ask, the main one for me was do I want to finish it, I was painfully able to donate the small top that needed an detailed border. The project was packaged along with its many pieces and pattern and has been delivered to Goodwill. Until next year, after scrap handling, I will do my best to keep it up a bit better than I have been. YOU ARE FABULOUS to carry us through this process annually. Many, many thanks.

My people! I found y'all! 😂🎉❤ LoL one time I got a flat tyre with donations in the boot and back seat. It was so annoying unloading everything onto the ground to change the tyre. Ugh! Never again!

Thanks Karen. This is my first declutter challenge and it really helps. It's funny that we need "permission" to destash some of our items. I had half a dozen table runners/wall hangings that went to a new home. I probably had them a minimum of 10 years. They were never going to get to the top of the list so out the door they went. Very freeing and made a friend happy too. Thanks again. Suzanne from Florida

Karen, I throughly enjoy your videos. Last year I followed each video very closely but this year I mostly tidied my sewing areas. I mostly worked on organizing my fabric so I can make decisions as to what I will actually use in projects. I try to use up my fabric in making “comfort quilts “ which I donate. Good work! So enjoyable. Keep going!

Thank you for this challenge Karen. I have participated for (I think) 3 years now, and this year I got the most out of the challenge. I will be keeping it in mind as I go throughout the year pulling things off my shelves, putting others on my shelves and when I am tempted to put something back where it doesn’t below I believe I will hear Karen’s voice saying that “like goes with like”. That should help keep my craft and sewing space in much better shape over the year. Your sewing space looks so much clearer and organized Karen, looks like the challenge helped you too. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for the challenge. This was my second year and I still enjoyed it. I had some “free” days as I didn’t collect much in the last year and everything was surprisingly still well organized

Thanks so much. I’m about 5 days behind but I’m getting there. I did this last year so this year’s not quite so hard. I’m finding I’m going to be able to get rid of some fabric scraps I’ve saved but don’t love. So I can give them to a friend who makes dog beds for pet shelters. She uses those scraps to stuff them.

Year 5 for me! And every year i benefit, I feel like I am finally getting it done! I have completed many UFOs, organized fabric to the point where I can see it all, and decluttered…. I love to walk into my sewing area where I can sit and sew and just enjoy the process!! Thank you again and again and again. I still have some hotspots, but i will be there for year 6!

Thank you for being such an inspiration, Karen! I have been watching your videos for years and though I haven't yet executed on every declutter day, I'm more motivated to do so. You've helped me get more organized as well with the way you store/organize your quilting items. Hope you get more subscribers and reach your goal!🤞

I have totally reorganized my sewing room and its contents. Thank u. I spent yesterday afternoon going thru my fabric and making choices! I actually have a donation box to send to Helping Hand. I finished one ufo , have another in my to-go bag for class, and I started a new project using a charm pack I received for Christmas plus 2 I already had. I have all the blocks made and am ready to sew together to make the top. I am very determined to use from my stash this year. Only buying if necessary to complete a project. Ty from one Karen to another. 😊.

Yay Day 21 for some…but not me! I’ve been sick the past three weeks so I’m just getting started! 😁 Thanks for this declutter series Karen! Hope to see you at QuiltCon in a few weeks! ❤

I like these videos, they give me hope for a potential future of de-cluttering practice. Currently, and it works for now, my practice for getting things done is avoidance. I avoid X by doing Y, I avoid A and B by doing D and F. I actually get a lot done this way, just not necessarily what I am "supposed" to be doing. It's all in my brain, anyway, and I have no one other than myself telling me what needs to be done. I hope by writing this down that my avoidance homunculus does not see it and decide to stop working.

I watched prior years' declutter challenges with some smugness. I didn't need it. Well, this year, I did it with one exception. (I tee-totally working with batting!) How do I feel at the end of the challenge? Proud of myself, yes. But humbled. And I found a forgotten treasure. Thank you.
