The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Күн бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
The Catechism enters Chapter Three on the “Sacraments at the Service of Communion” which include both Holy Orders and Matrimony. As it introduces the sacrament of Holy Orders, Fr. Mike reminds us that every vocation is a gift, and that-no matter what state of life we are in or have been called to-we should read this chapter with an open heart and a grateful spirit. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1533-1538.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time. It is composed of three degrees, which are irreplaceable for the organic structure of the Church: the episcopate, the presbyteriate, and the diaconate. Orders designates an ecclesial body into which one enters by means of a special consecration (ordination). Through a special gift of the Holy Spirit, this sacrament enables the ordained to exercise a sacred power in the name and with the authority of Christ for the service of the People of God. Let us pray for the religious who have been ordained. 🙏

I DO HOPE I helped my husband, while he was here, get into heaven..! He is certainly doing that for me, since the Lord took him home so suddenly in 2021. 😔 I have been thankful for our 53 years together..! Now I feel him and the Lord helping me on my journey..! Thanks also to Fr. Mike and MY priest, for THEIR help..! ❤❤ They don’t even KNOW that (or how much) they are STILL helping me..! 😔 MY PRIEST got me back to confession after a long time. 😔 I had a fabulous Lent and Easter while still in mourning. I will celebrate …and not soon forget… that time. 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️ Oh my, there is SO MUCH to comment on today..! What a LOADED day..!! ❤❤❤ But, I’ve said too much already..! ❤❤❤ I CANNOT WAIT to hear you again. I am praying for all of you, especially Fr. Mike and MY priest. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank you for taking up the vocation..!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Please pray for me. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless. ❤❤❤

My husband and I had gone to a small mass celebrated by a priest who traveled around this desert area to bring the gospel to those areas. Afterwards, he told us he had been married and became a deacon. When his children were grown and his wife had died, the diocese was short on priests. So, they asked him if he would take the next step and become a priest. I guess he's the only priest who can be called "Grandpa".

Also just for your edification (and since I'm much older than you!) I wanted to explain what your comment about "cooking with gas" means. You quoted it as cooking with gasoline. The original meaning was cooking with natural gas. This phrase was promoted by gas companies about 80-90 years ago. Just an FYI.

Thank you for doing this Fr. Mike and Ascension Press. Truly a valuable project! Question: why is it that deacons are not allowed to consecrate the Eucharist or give absolution? In a sense, why is their power limited?
@TrixRN
@TrixRN Жыл бұрын
When the diaconate was instituted by the apostles, they were given a separate role from priests on purpose. Their role is more for administrative, service to the people & helper to the priest. They usually administered Holy Communion after the priest consecrated it, took it to the homebound, distributed food to the widows & orphans, etc. For a long time the Church let the role of Deacon lapse & (I think) priests in formation were ordained as transitional deacons (and still are). With Vatican II the role of permanent deacon was revived. That’s my understanding anyway.

Ok,I’ve endured this CIY until now! Way over my head! Written for theological students and hierarchy, not for those in the pews. Baltimore Catechism was written for those in the pews! I’m done!

I’m sorry to hear that.😔🙏❤️ It is difficult at times, but Fr. Mike’s explanation really clarifies the teaching & makes it understandable. If we have to stretch our intellect a little that’s a good thing. It helps us grow. On the more difficult ones I might have to listen a couple of times to fully understand.

Not sure what moved you to this frustration, but if you are able to just pull one point out from today, you might try that versus trying to get it all. For example, my one take home today was that the sacrament I’ve come to live out in matrimony is not just to make me a better person, but to help my spouse get to heaven too. Maybe try pulling out a take home point. That helps me. What struck you most? What stood out? I’m not from Baltimore Catechism times, but know many who are. It’s always hard learning new ways of celebrating the faith, especially if you are one who finds comfort in your routine. While it’s not the catechism you grew up with, it’s still full of beautiful instruction. Have you sought the Holy Spirit to help shine light or wisdom on what He needs you to hear right here and now? I wish you well.

I understand and agree that the Baltimore Catechism is better as this can be very modernist....and I often struggle with what Father says....but I'm plodding on.
