I converted when our son was a year old. That was 32 years ago. I knew in my own mind that we needed to be united in faith. When I started RCIA I was pleasantly surprised. All the horrible things I had been told about the Catholic faith were false. People fear what they don't understand and we should all strive to learn and change. I love my Catholic faith! What I cannot wrap my head around is when there is a mixed marriage and when you ask them how they will handle the faith issue with their children, you get the response, "We will let the child decide on their own." That's just totally not acceptable. Parents are the #1 teachers of the faith. If you truly believe in your Catholic faith you should make it your #1 goal to raise your children fully in the faith.

I 100% agree. I’m Catholic and my husband is Christian. We let our children decide and I wish we hadn’t. I wish I had given them a strong Catholic foundation. Out of 4 we have 1 Christian, 2 spiritual and 1 undecided. I wish I had given them the gift of knowing God like we know God. It’s my biggest regret and I will spend the rest of my life trying to amend. I pray for my children and grandchildren daily. That they might know the Father, the one true God, the Son, the perfect sacrifice, thank you Jesus. And the Holy Spirit that gives us wisdom and balance. This i pray amen, amen.

@@maandpaamerica849I am so sorry, and hope the Lord answers your prayers. We are exhorted in many places in Scripture to train and bring up our children in the faith, and not just let them decide. Prov. 22:6, Deuteronomy 6:7-8, etc. We all can look back on our lives and have regrets in some area; you are not alone. We ask forgiveness, and pray, asking God for mercy and healing.

Amen! I was raised in a mixed marriage family and unfortunately my stepfather would make mocking comments about the Catholic faith and so I didn’t take my Catholic faith serious, until I was 50. I also didn’t raise my children serious in the faith and now everyone in my family is all over the place about religion. Please pray for my family as I do every day for the Lord to bring us all back to God’s one true Catholic Church! Thank you!

I was advised to have masses said for the intentions of each loved one I am concerned about, to pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Novena etc for their intentions, to bring them green scapulars and the miraculous medals, etc. Some of my loved ones have dug in their heels and do not care to discuss it. No matter what happens in this ever-changing world, God invites us to count on him because he never changes. ❤

Long story short, this cradle Catholic married a very devout Methodist. About five years into our marriage he started attending mass with me. He fell in love with the Eucharist. 10 years into our marriage he converted to Catholicism. And now he is studying to be a deacon in the Catholic Church. It was a beautiful, beautiful journey. And our kids (23 and 22) are very, very faithful young men

He that is weary of sin, come: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

Our family motto is: Always say YES to God! I was raised as a lukewarm Cradle Catholic. DH was baptized as a teen in a Baptist Church but did not practice and considered himself an atheist when we met. He attended Mass with me while we dated and eagerly agreed to marry in the Catholic Church and raise our kids Catholic. When I was preg w/ #1 he went thru RCIA. But all throughout our 20s we were both clueless because we had no idea what the Catholic Church believed. We were too concerned with survival to seek out any faith formation. I wish we had faith formation at a young age. I wish marriage prep helped us learn what the Catholic Church actually taught instead of the fun and games we were presented with. That was 25 years ago and in a tiny town on the outskirts of a diocese so maybe things are different elsewhere. My husband and I are both strong in the faith now and God has produced so many good fruits in our marriage.

Among the trickiest parts of the Catechism as marriage eithers makes the life easier or more difficult. As it is said that we must not be unequally yoked, it is rightly discussed through this episode that circumstances and the geography play a big role. It's indeed important to make things clear before marriage instead of assuming that everything will be sorted out later on. Finally it does boil down to saying yes to God and following Him while being compassionate and constant in prayers. I hope and pray that God provides peace and wisdom to everyone affected by such situation! Thank you for guiding and explaining this, Fr. Mike, and team Ascension! God bless

I am a cradle Catholic and my husband was baptist when we got married. He was one of the most anti-Catholic people I knew, and I almost didn’t marry him because of that. We didn’t even get married in the Church. I still attended mass, skipped communion, and stayed in the Catholic Church while he attended a baptist church. He actually made an appointment with my priest to complain about why I couldn’t take communion. Fast forward 5 years, and he had a conversion, became Catholic, we had our marriage validated and now he’s an ordained deacon. If I had not married him, this may not have ever happened. God works through us continuously.

This was about 30years ago and our area is quite poor. Some people actually got up and walked out it was so bad😢. My husband never went back to Mass after that😢........also, my son was getting married to a lovely girl who was going to become Catholic but the priest said she didn't have to and he would still marry them😢......they have children who are educated at Catholic schools and recieved the sacraments but my son now doesn't believe in God and the children don't go to Mass unless they come with me and that's only occasionally. You are preaching to the choir 😢unfortunately. Yes we are all familiar with it. I can tell you that part of a priest's job is to try to raise $ for the church. It is a difficult part of their job and some do it better than others. With so many churches closing, $ is a factor. That being said, we need more priests like Father Mike. I have met a few that were difficult and after I got to know them it became clear WHY they were difficult. In one instance the priest was diabetic and fasting. It was causing his blood pressure and blood sugar to go to stroke level. After that was resolved, he is not so difficult now. 😮❤🙏❤

My husband and I, both Catholic since birth, have a similar story. We raised our son in the faith, went to mass every Sunday and were involved in parish activities. After Confirmation, we allowed our son to decide his own path in the church. Sadly, he chose to turn his back on his faith. I pray daily for his reunion to faith, even though I know that may mean difficulties for him (most people turn to God in times of trouble). All I can say is that my personal story was very similar to my son's, and I eventually returned to the church. God is good. Prayers for all those who have lost their faith. 🙏❤️

Have you asked your grandchildren why they have fallen away from church? It would be nice to discuss. Do they see their life without Communion? How is it possible? Why aren’t we hearing this kind of information/truth from our local priests when couples are getting married??? So much of this has been shocking news to me! Great teachings Father Mike! God bless you!❤ Marriage Preparation Good-quality marriage preparation is essential in helping couples work through the questions and challenges that will arise after they tie the knot. Questions that the engaged couple should consider include in what faith community (or communities) the couple will be involved, how the couple will handle extended family who may have questions or concerns about one spouse’s faith tradition, and how the couple will foster a spirit of unity despite their religious differences. Of all the challenges an ecumenical or interfaith couple will face, the most pressing one likely will be the question of how they raise their children.

A mixed marriage needs for liceity the permission of an ecclesiastical authority. In case of disparity of cult, a dispensation is required for validity. In both cases, it is essential that the spouses do not exclude the acceptance of the essential ends and properties of marriage. It is also necessary for the Catholic party to accept the obligation, of which the non-Catholic party has been advised, to persevere in the faith and to assure the baptism and Catholic education of their children.

My parents marriage was a mixed marriage. My father was Baptist and my mother was Catholic. They were married in 1943 in the Cathedral in Ponce, Puerto Rico at a side altar. They had 4 children and we were all raised as Catholic. We attended Catholic school for all 12 years. My father said I proved the quality of a Catholic education. In my senior year I was able to take college English at night. My English grade in college was higher than my grade in high school in the same year.

By the grace and mercy of God, I have benefited from watching every most excellent video in this series by our esteemed Father Mike! I have shared many appreciative thoughts and sometimes gained insights through this comment section, but for several weeks have been quite reserved. Now, however, I am once again inspired to relay an observation: It's my considered opinion, though subjective and limited to a great degree, that it appears that unfortunately many baptised Catholics, who would seem to be more nominal than deeply engaged in their faith, simply don't know, don't care, and don't appreciate phenomenon like "disparity of cult" etc. They are not even perfunctory and hardly circumspect in their consideration of these indubitably salient aspects of marriage. So inspired have I been by Father Mike's teaching that I daresay that the Catechism in a Year series would benefit all school children starting in Grade seven which is to say at 12 years old and perhaps even 10 years old - so that by the time of adulthood and potential matrimony, they would be not only duly informed and deeply so, but hopefully they'd become disposed to appreciate these vitally important aspects within the diverse kinds of marriage and relationships. May Jesus bless all who hear and would benefit from the eternal wisdom of Christ as taught through the Church and illuminated through the blessing of Father Mike.

I agree. It's best to teach children at the time of their Confirmation about the difficulties of mixed marriages, etc, cos after Confirmation, we mostly meet young people in the church for marriage, deeply in love with a person of other faith😢 and then it's difficult to change their mind.

Great topic! I married a Pentecostal girl 47 years ago and my understanding about Salvation, Sacraments and Scripture continue to grow! Go to Mass and Communion and listen to The Word at an evangelical church! I found out I was Not the only Catholic doing this. I’m fact, I joined a Bible study or Life Group and about half were Catholic and practicing Catholics. Who knew!! The difficulty is where one is not a Christian. Eventually it leads to a disunity in the marriage or worse. Even in political terms. Different bumper stickers 😊

This day REALLY hit me. I like to say that I became Catholic when I met my husband because I was not a church-goer. I did go through marriage preparation when we became engaged, but I wasn't completely Catholic when we got married. I was baptized and entered the church at the Easter Vigil. My father-in-law wasn't Catholic when he and Mom got married, but he raised his sons as Catholics and joined the church officially years later. My husband and I were married 32 years before he died and my in-laws were married 60 years before my father-in-law died. Next, my uncle married a Catholic girl and I think they raised their children as Catholics. But, their marriage did not last and they were separated just before their 24th anniversary. So, some "mixed" marriages don't work and others do. I was raised Protestant and my parents, grandparents and my mother's paternal grandparents were married a long time, at least 50 or 60 years except my parents who made it 37 years before my dad died of cancer. I am trying very hard to learn about the faith and you, Father Mike along with your crew, are a BIG help in making this happen. God Bless You All

The church does not look down on other religions but believes that the fulness of truth and discipleship to Jesus subsists in the Catholic church. Marriage is in itself difficult, but not to be united in faith makes it even more so. Hence, one needs to know the essential ends and properties of marriage viz. to become saints. Otherwise there will be brokenness in that marriage.😢

Fr James E Coyle married a Catholic, secularly mixed, couple in 1921 and was assassinated by the KKK in Alabama. If ever there were a patron of mixed marriages whether mixed by secular or ecclesiastical definition it would be him. He is truly a martyr of Catholic marriage and a patron of all marriages but the true patron of Marriage as a Sacrament in Jesus Christ as the wedding feast of the Lamb attests, as He is the bridegroom and the Church is His bride. Sacrametal Marriage is a vision of this marriage in heaven to which all are invited. We should be handing out invitation pamphlets to inviting everyone in the highways and byways of this journey of life as the parable of the "The King's Wedding Feast encourages us to do. What sorrow for those who make excuses for not coming? What sorrow for those who have not their wedding garment of Christian baptism? What sorrow for we who don't invite everyone? There will be no sorrow for the saints in heaven for they have given the invitation to everyone by the example of their lives. We should be like them. Invite all. Be blessed, Live blessed; bless others.

Mixed marriage in the Catholic church means both are baptized but one is a non-Catholic Christian. What you are talking about with Fr. James Coyle was an INTERRACIAL marriage.
