Look as far as I'm concerned, if you get yourself to Katahdin with your feet, it counts regardless of alternative routes.

You are the one hiking the trail , doesn't matter which trail as long as you are happy with it. That's all that counts. Personally for my self it's being out there and not the destination that counts. The destination can be anywhere , official or unofficial.

I just walked the dog and thought I would love to watch a new Quadzilla video und there it is. I feel blessed. And I feel your words in the beginning. Being outdoors is not a competition. You can be competitive but leave it to yourself. I'm always amazed by american trail angels. Shoutout to all of those amazing people supporting the hiking community.

I live near the CDT in a trail town and I get out and hike the different alternates all the time. I think its smart to study the map and weather and choose your own route.

Agreed especially for CDT, you nighr get away with going on ridges during storms on the AT but not the CDT
@Muffin1280
@Muffin1280 2 ай бұрын
True! The CDT really teaches you to make up your mind about where to go and how to get there. I even get that rationality now on day hikes. Puds and loops have to get me somewhere pretty amazing in order to walk them.

I agree that taking alternates is no big deal when you have nothing to prove. You triple crowned. Anyone who talks smack on you is looking very foolish. I also agree that it's about each individual and hike your own hike in general is the attitude that makes the most sense to me. I disagree that purists are dogmatic because of simply ego or wanting to put others down. It's probably more related to integrity and having a hard definition of what hiking a specific trail is. If one person says, "I hiked the Appalachian trail," does that mean whatever they want it to mean? Or are they misleading others? Again, I think It's an integrity thing for some people. Something similar to the stolen valor thing that upsets people a lot (not equal but just an example i thought of). I'm not taking sides, nor am i a purist, but i think it's is important to steel man others' viewpoints. Helps bring us closer to knowledge and truth. Happy trails.

It looks like you got lucky that it was a dry bite. A copperhead bite could certainly take you off trail for a bit. Much better than a rattlesnake I must say. I think the purest thing was started by a couple of KZbin channels that made a big deal out of hiking every single foot of the trail. I have actually never heard anyone on the trail even talk about this before. Then again I tend to hike alone and with older people who don’t really care. We are happy to just be out there. Take care and be safe.
