Also, RIP John Hurt. He genuinely wanted to be the Doctor and was elated when Steven Moffat told him that he's not just the War Doctor, but an official Doctor. As sad as it was that Christopher Eccleston didn't come in for the 50th, I think it turned out for the better both in terms of the script and the final product that Steven Moffat then had to invent the War Doctor and thus bring in John Hurt.

John Hurt was great as the Doctor, but some scenes of the episode would be tremendously more epic if it was Nine instead of him, like the scene with the three Doctors breaking themselves out of the painting or them deciding not to destroy Gallifrey. Nine would feel completely differently because we would already know him, we would associate the whole of Series 1 with him. The Day of the Doctor would become a new variation of Three Doctors, and it would feel... fantastic!

6:55 The length of the Time War is relative, depending on where you are located within it. For example by Gallifreyan reckoning it went on for 500 years, however in other locations the War became infinite, endlessly repeating over and over again due to the looping and twisting nature of the paradoxes created (re-writing history, deleting persons/armies/civilizations from ever existing, stealing fleets from the future to fight battles in the past/present, etc...).

My one disappointment in this episode, was that the time war was shown as a conventional war. But I also understand the 50th has to keep the child watching in mind, and that might be too much.
@chazo1367 Жыл бұрын
@@CrankyGrandma I think the idea of this episode is that it's the Last Day, there are no more temporal weapons in use because they've been used so much to the point that it was causing problems for everyone, including the Daleks and Timelords and they weren't doing anything to turn the tide of battle, they became pointless because both sides probably had their ways to fight back at this stage. This is also the big last siege, the Timelords were pushed back to their home and losing the war, all the Omega weapons were even useless and used against the Daleks to no effect except for the Moment itself. At this point I think if it weren't for the Doctors, then the Daleks win, because they simply had the ultimate upper hand and managed to draw out such a siege on a whole planet.

One thing I’m really disappointed with is how they showed the “time war” being fought with guns and explosions. A time war should be about re-writing history. The Faction Paradox books and audios did a great job with this. They describe “The Great War” as a battle over causality itself. There are planets whose history became so convoluted that no one could approach them anymore without being scattered and temporally wrenched apart. There are references to Faction Paradox throughout 11’s run. They were originally in some of the eighth Doctor novels and were spun off from them.

It was the most amazing experience I ever had watching a fictional television show. Just phenomenal. And Steven Moffat ist an absolute genius. (I've heard from many people who watched this in the cinema bc their fan friend dragged them there and they became fans through this episode.) The way Steven put so many nods to the past in, so many inside jokes and references etc and yet it never feels as if it's hammed in or slowing down the story or that it becomes a nostalgia fest. The fact that he basically rewrote the doctor's history with the time war without taking away the emotion and pain and tragedy of the previous seasons. I'm just floored every time at that man's writing talent. Anyway, great reaction. I love watching your DW reaction videos, it makes me rediscover those stories all over again.

We can't know exactly Moffat's process in writing, but it's pretty clear even from the tidbits you've been using as refutation, that he wanted Chris involved. So Chris was offered the opportunity to participate and he said no. Let's just agree on that and move on. Further replies on this thread will be met as trolling and subsequently ignored.

So many reasons I've been long waiting for this reaction. 1. Your past reactions to the Doctor being such a pacifist (which he became even more vehemently so than he was before the war, which was Classic Who). I think it's really only after reaching this point in the show that it drives home that the Doctor's aversion to both guns, violence, war (and by some association, soldiers) is largely self-loathing. 2. There're callbacks to the ethical quandaries he faced such as in The Waters of Mars or in The God Complex where he found the hotel room with his greatest fear. I'm certain his greatest fear is himself, that he is or could readily be the most terrifying monster of all. 3. The cantankerousness between the Doctor's incarnations meeting each other and disliking each other's quirks and personalities is metaphorical for his self-loathing (or anyone faced with the aspects of themselves, past or current, they don't like and wish they didn't have). 4. I think the reason I love the 50th special so much is because while the entire series is always about the Doctor saving others (or when his companions save him), this is the story where he saves himself. Of course, as usual, his companion was there at the most critical moment to say the right thing. 5. As someone who watched Four on tv (he was the first incarnation most of us in the US saw when the show was brought here), yeah I mentally fangasmed at hearing his unmistakable voice, as did half the theater. (I also highly recommend watching his more noteworthy Classic era serials. Every Doctor has fans for whom that actor was "their" Doctor, but Tom Baker held the role for 7 years and for so many his performance and characterization was iconically *the* Doctor. Even among Classic Who stories, his stories are classic. Love for Sarah Jane came largely from her time with Four too.) 6. Re: Eleven being "The Man Who Forgets", that does characterize his portrayal of the Doctor so well. Matt Smith was the youngest actor ever cast to play the Doctor (beating out Peter Davison), and Eleven can be interpreted as the Old Man running from himself and his past, his youthful external appearance and more child-like personality as a form of denial and avoidance, increasing from Nine to Ten to Eleven. 7. I think when you go back and rewatch earlier seasons now, it contextualizes what Nine's state of mind would have been when he returned to Earth after the end of the Time War, and thus why Rose is supposed to be uniquely special among the Doctor's companions. Also, someone blanked out the opening credits to preserve the surprise of who would be appearing in the 50th? Haha, rather brilliant..! :)
@Mrazmatmahmood7 жыл бұрын
gluuuuue I don't know. I think the Doctor being such a vehement pacifist as a form of self loathing was made pretty clear in the Tennant/RTD era.

IT'S HERE!!! Jess, what an incredible journey you've gone on, and that you've let us be a part of. I have to say, Doctor Who December has so much reminded me of a tradition we have with Christmas calendars, where every day leading up to Christmas you'd get these small presents or some little trinket, and it was so much fun. This series has really felt like that, I've enjoyed it all a great deal. (And in Sweden, we celebrate Christmas on the 24th, and I just managed to get this done before all the relatives arrived, so, YAY!) This special... I watched it in the cinema, the day after it aired, and it was such an amazing experience. I cried, laughed and gasped out loud, at the edge of my seat the entire time. I feel like you might have had a somewhat similar experience with that at least. And yeah, there are so many easter eggs. The more I watch of Classic Who, the more I discover. I think it's a brilliant episode in both paying homage to Classic Who and New Who as well as opening up the universe for new possibilities in the future. It's beautiful and funny, it takes itself seriously when it needs to, and not seriously at all when it can. I love it. It's so hopeful, and I love when Doctor Who manages to pull that off. I have to say, I did enjoy them bringing back Billie Piper, and for me, it really felt like she was a different character in this. I know Moffat wanted her in there to pay homage to her because she was the companion that brought back the show, but I really like the Moment as a character. And I feel like she's very different from Rose here. Also, Billie Piper has developed into such an amazing actress, and it's a lot of fun that she gets to show that off. I was impressed that David Tennant being in this had managed to be kept secret from you - but what a great reaction that produced! Same goes for so many moments in this - all the Doctors, "No, Sir, all thirteen!", John Hurt being amazing, the fez, the curator! Even though you don't have much experience with Tom Baker, it says a lot that his appearance still can cause an emotional response. He's not been the most... active when it comes to participating in Doctor Who anniversaries, so to say, and I'm so glad he was a part of this. I could talk about this special all day, but I won't because it's Christmas and I have presents to give away and to open and people to meet. But Jess, you really made my entire December a lot brighter with this, and I teared up along with you. Looking forward to see what more you have to show us, and to the rest of Doctor Who December, though I'm sad it's coming to an end. What a blast it's been though! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY DAY OF THE DOCTOR!

Its worth pointing out that originally Moffat wanted Nine to be the Doctor with the war past, but Eccleston didnt want to come back so he had to invent and insert John Hurt. Had it been Ecclestons Doctor, it would have made more sense to have Rose / Badwolf appear.

"Day of the Doctor" is THE definitive HUGE Anniversary special for any tv series. It's how it should be done. It's a real shame STAR TREK for it's 50th year didn't follow WHO' FANTASTIC example and do something like the 50th Year that Dotctor Who Had. Every month in 2013, there was a something cool about Doctor Who (The Twelve Revisiteds specials, BF did a special 50th anniversary Audios adventure, Books, apps, "The Five-ish Doctors" special, everything) leading up to the "Day Of the Doctor" "The DOTD" was even the big screen in theaters all at the same time all around the world at the same time it was on TV. It was the first time Doctor Who was properly on The Big screen..in 3D Even, and since then, they have done other WHO events on the Big screen with Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel, Dark Water/Death in Heaven, and even The Five Doctors was Riff-Riftraxed. Trek had one Documentary on the History channel that to me felt rushed...THAT WAS IT! No other Specials..no big promo..no big nothing. Yeah, There was Star Trek Beyond..but it wasnt as big as The 50th anniversary special like Day of the Doctor was for WHO.

Tom Baker is the best of the Classic Doctors. He was the Doctor when I was a child. His era lasted for 7 years because they were afraid of what was going to happen when he regenerated. Tom was the first Doctor to get an American audience. At the time the show was aired on PBS, the same channel that had Sesame Street and Mr Rogers. Tom Was awesome as The Doctor.

Apparently, McGann was not thought to be a big enough draw for overseas sales (which don't rely to any significant degree on 'old' Who fans) hence the casting of indubitable star John Hurt.
