One place if you find yourself out that way is the great sand dunes in southern Colorado. I’ve been fortunate to get around a bit and I’ve still never seen quite anything like it. Imagine the huge Colorado mountains with endless vast spaces…then massive sand dunes in the middle of nowhere. It’s so unique that there’s insects and life that exist only in that closed off ecosystem, nowhere else in the world. Thanks for sharing these awesome videos!

the subeast is a trooper!! I'm actually in the shopping prosses of getting a subi. after see in all the potential of the crosstrek. for a camping enthusiast it seem like a solid investment to get a crosstrek.
@TheAdventureZombie3 жыл бұрын
The Crosstrek is a fantastic platform, though I tell people to be aware that there isn't much storage space. If you need more storage, an Outback, or Forester is the way to go. The Ascent is a bit underpowered for any real off roading, so that's not a great choice. At least not with the current Ascent drivetrain anyway.

Awesome stuff Adventure Zombie 🧟♂️! I think this is the only video out on KZbin right now of a Subaru doing part of Fins N Things South. I was out there 3-20-21 and just recently released a KZbin video about the entire Southern trail. It gets much harder after the camp sites and the final obstacles are easy to miss if you don’t follow the signs, but good on you for going down the “butt scratcher” without a spotter. With a spotter, you probably wouldn’t have hit. The entire Fins N Things trail is 9 miles total.
@TheAdventureZombie3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah I'll be going out there again soon to spend some time and actually hit the trails with better angles, and a bit more research, lol. I honestly just read a quick snippet saying a stock Wrangler could do it, so I went for it, lol
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAdventureZombie there’s a lot of confusion about Fins N Things. The sign at the entrance says “this trail is rated 3.5 out of 4 and should only be attempted in a 4WD with an experienced driver”. BUT, the book you pick up at the gas station says the trail “can be done, in a stock Jeep Wrangler with an experienced driver.”. When you drive a vehicle with a solid front axle or something like a side by side, these Moab slick rock trails are easy. This trail gets a bit challenging for something like a 4runner or any 4WD with IFS. The trail gets increasingly harder and the most demanding unskippable obstacle is the wall climb at mile 8. It’s like going down the steep drop, but it’s twice and long and you have to go climb up. I almost rolled there. When I go back, I’m going to rent a side by side. Have you ever been in one? They’re stupid capable. While we were waiting 1.5 hours for a crashed side by side to clear the trail, some guy took us for a ride. We were literally crawling up and down rock faces in this old dilapidated golf cart looking side by side.

Honestly, if you need a recovery out there call up Matt's Offroad Recovery (Winder Towing), do a crossover KZbin episode and you'll get more publicity and exposure on KZbin you'd probably end up making money by the end of it.

I feel like a ton of the Subaru haters just hate to justify spending 70-100k on a vehicle that barely out performs a Subaru in extreme circumstance, that good driving and decision making can generally avoid anyways. If people are purposefully picking the most difficult path. They're not offroading imo. They're seeking a different challenge. Because risking getting stuck, vehicle damage or anything unnecessarily is against ANY wise offroading experience. You're supposed to pick the safest path, the easiest path. The point is to arrive at your destination with minimal or no problems.
@TheAdventureZombie3 жыл бұрын
I like the challenge :)
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
OneDankind offroading is defined as the sport of “conquering obstacles”. What you describe is “overlanding” where exploration, the experience and the journey is the goal. I use to drive a Toyota FJ Cruiser, a SJ Forester XT and now a Honda Passport. There’s substantial mechanical capability differences even between my Subie and my new Honda, but as Adventure Zombie has shown, driver skill may play an even bigger part. My Wife in a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon won’t know what to do on a trail like this, and since only about 15% of SUV/Truck owners actually take their vehicles offroad, most people would know what to do either.
@onedankind81683 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring anything off pavement is technically off-road. Being off-road isn’t even a requirement for overlanding as many destinations may have paved roads right up to them in 2021. Especially in NA. What you’re defining it the SPORT of off roading. There is a wide range of what off-roading actually is. Gatekeepers and haters try to define it as only really difficult stuff. Probably so they feel more special for doing it.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@@onedankind8168 the literal definition of *off-roading* : “the activity or sport of driving a motor vehicle over rough terrain.”
@onedankind81683 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring some of the main roads in my city qualify for that. Lol And an obstacle avoided is an obstacle overcome. It’s not like you need to climb that 2 foot tall Boulder if you can go around it. Is all my point is.

Super impressed with your rig bro! Been following your channel for quite some time now...Great content 👌 ?? I know you have X-Mode, but did you also have your cvt in manual mode? I'm slowly building my 17' crosstrek out here in AZ.
@TheAdventureZombie3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate you being a long time viewer :) I actually didn't use manual mode at all, I found that I was able to crawl up and down things pretty easily. I don't even think I used X-mode, trying to remember back. These cars are way more capable that what people give them credit for, but I've for sure found the limits, haha!
