My dog and I were awakened in the middle of the night by a grumble coming at us, and then a HUGE bang of thunder that shook our apartment building. My first thought was, "Wow, I'm glad we're not in a tent in the woods right now!" 😂 The Refuge l99ks like the perfect spot to take refuge from the storm. They are perfectly situated, aren't they!?
@wildflowersadventures6 ай бұрын
Haha, I bet! Thunderstorms on trail are pretty scary. Weather is such a powerful force and we’re no match. From the blinding rain to the wind gusts, lightning, and potential for blow downs falling on you is quite terrifying. A tent is definitely not a great place to weather severe storms.

Good morning, Bears. Glad the hostel turned out to be a nice place for ya'll to avoid the bad weather. The pizza looked great. MB, love lemon blueberry anything. Blueberry Banana is great also if you run across it. Ya'll got through with today's trail before the weather came in. Glad for that. Ya'll take care of each other. Stay safe. See you tomorrow on your first slack packing adventure.

Little hack.... In your freeze dried hiker meals or dehydrated Meals are the little packets for moisture. If you save those in a ziploc baggy, they're an excellent way to take the moisture out of dropped electronics.

Good morning, Bears! Great move to find shelter before the storm! Little Bear I’m so envious that you get to enjoy countless ice creams. Oh I remember those days many, many years ago 🤣. You both look great and you are shining warmth and light to those around you. Speaking of those around it appears you are surrounded by men. 😳🤣. Fabulous picture of you all at the hostel. I only hope you two get some good sleep. With 6 others in the same room……ahhh it should be a snoring contest. I’d have to say, that would bother me a little. Love and light to you both and all of us here watching your journey.👍. 🐱🧸🐻⛰️🥾👍……..Miss Elle🐈⬛!

Colorful morning sky. Beautiful but. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning. You can never be too careful. Last time I went camping a storm blew in. A large tree fell very close to me.
@wildflowersadventures6 ай бұрын
I’m pretty sure there’s lots of truth in that. It’s seriously pretty scary to be in a tent with the winds whipping the trees around on what you know is very wet ground. Blow downs are everywhere. Even being diligent about where you set up camp doesn’t guarantee safety. I bet having that tree fall near you was terrifying.

... Slack packing sounds like a break on the body , and probably gains a few extra miles but after the cost and sacrifices made to accumulating your gear ,, I could never take my eyes off of it ... besides the gear left behind might be exactly what you need down trail ... Mistakes and theft happen everywhere ..
@wildflowersadventures6 ай бұрын

Glad you snagged bunks at the hostel before they filled up, and even more glad that it was such a nice one. They leave most of their items at the hostel and only take essentials for the hike that day. They are driven to a spot usually ahead dropped off and hike back to hostel or designated place. Usually you take food, rain gear, essentials only.

You mentioned not staying in the shelter because of the virus. The hostels seem to have rooms that 8 or 9 people stay in. Is it not a concern there?
@wildflowersadventures6 ай бұрын
It can be for sure, but most of the time, when we’re able, LB and I get a private room to limit exposure. Sometimes that’s not an offering, but the places we have stayed in the communal rooms have been diligent with cleaning.

Their average miles so far don't represent what their average miles will be for the rest of the trail. As recommended they warmed up to daily mileage. I looked where I was on day 44 and I was just on the other side of roan mtn. Exactly where they would of been if they hiked this day. I took 30 zero days, most after this point and I finished sept 30th. I purposely took my time as I didn't have a deadline and wanted to enjoy the trail as much as possible. I'm guessing they will finish mid Sept. They are in the bubble and doing fine.
