We're not that far, maybe in 4-5 GPU generations this will be mid range. The 4090 can already render amazingly realistic graphics in Cyberpunk 2077 with some mods, the car models look pretty much like real! And look at it this way, the 3060ti, one of the lower end 30 series cards can match the power of the 1080ti, the flagship card 2 generations back. So if we continue that level of progression, it's not far at all.

They will get ever closer to reality. But there will always be artifacts and the uncanny valley effect that distract us and tell us that it's fake. One day, almost all of the graphics will be AI generated on the fly, and virtually indistinguishable from reality..but something will feel fake about it. There will always be that disconnect.

It's a light probe (a photograph taken with a special 360 degree camera), downloaded from Google Street level. The image is used as spherical environment map. The only thing rendered is the car and the ball. Can be done with almost any modern computer, although it will take some time to render.
