• On July 14, Mike Smith opened fire on police officers in Florida, according to charging documents.
• The Waterbury native was friends with Joshua Zimmerman and his entire circle.
• Smith was charged with first-degree murder of a police officer and fled Florida, notifying Zimmerman’s associates that he intended to die rather than return to prison.
• Smith made it to Georgia, where authorities eventually caught up with him.
• Following through on his promise, Smith took his own life after killing a police officer in Florida. Smith was communicating with individuals related to Zimmerman.
• That same day, Zimmerman was petrified as federal agents raided his mother’s home, unaware of the connection between the cop killer, the escaped prisoner, and the Waterbury “crew.”
• It remains possible that Mike Smith was traveling to pick up Zimmerman and head to Connecticut together, but that plan was cut short when authorities apprehended Smith.
