Good morning, Juliane. Shame on you for unaliving those poor mosquitos. I would have too. Great day today. I have never seen so many creek and river crossings. The lake you showed us, when you asked if we were ready for it, was absolutely gorgeous. How neat it must be to see all these beautiful spots up close and personal. Thank you for sharing them with us. Take care. Stay safe. See you tomorrow.

Seavey Pass is named for Clyde Leroy Seavey (1847-1943) a California politician and administrator on various state boards. - The Sierra Nevada ends pretty much where the Cascades start. The north end is generally said to be Fredonyer Pass, southwest of Susanville. For the PCT, that's when you cross State Route 36 near Chester (Mile 1331.3), just past the midway point on the trail.

I wondered what the birds were but never mind, those were mosquitoes. At 14:50 right there is Wooley Mule's Ear (Wyethia mollis) They are very common plants in the entire west on all the high elevation trails. You can see 8 other species from NMexico to Washington. The seeds are edible like long skinny sunflower seeds. They live so long you can see the exact same clumps 20 years later if you go back to the same spot.

They have been really lucky so far. But it is not impossible. As you can see in the vids of Austin Seder or Jack Keogh, it's not uncommon to get the first rain in Washington. But the opposite (like lightning and thunderstorms in the Sierra, combined with a lot of snow) is also possible (Elina Osborne, 2019).

So, you wish the whip-or-wouldn't? Have fun. Don't let your inner german over analyze things and decrease your enjoyment. I let go of my inner german in my 30s and life was easier. You could carry a Zippo(or similar) pocket warmer to dry your shoes and socks at night. It burns lighter fluid. This also gives you heat for your sleeping bag if its a very cold night. Happy trails. Good Luck, Rick

Based on where I think you are, those should be Mountain Chickadees. But I agree that whistle sounds like the Black-capped I know so well in Connecticut. I can understand why you’d find Whip-Poor-Wills annoying, but it’s music to my ears as they are pretty scarce and seldom heard where I live. I’m sure you have two pairs of socks - can you put the wet one on back of your pack to dry out during the day?

As someone who lives in NC the whippoorwill is highly annoying 😑 when your trying to camp and he yelling as loud as he can 20 feet from where your camping at 1am and he sounds like a dang car alarm going off 😅.... bossbay is a beast of a woman she was a bodybuilder she has videos on her channel. She also knows how to box as well. Thats why her balance is so good.

Well here in North Florida the Whippoorwill comes out the same time every night sing their songs(which I love), then fly over to some other part of the woods. Some years ago, having just moved to NC( spent 8 years then moved back to NF)I was hiking the Babel Trail(not a good first hike for me but fun just the same)I heard; and I swear sounded like cicadas. What ever they were, they had to be the loudest pia’s in the world. It sounds like I’m dissing NC vs Fla, but I’m not meaning it that way. Loved my hiking/canoeing/camping days at the Gorge, Fontana…etc.

I'm not completely understanding how you follow the trail out there. Sure, there's plenty of places where it's obvious, but it seems there's places where it's not, and I don't see any paint on trees or signs or anything. Is it the far out app that keeps you on trail? Anyway, still enjoying your journey and still hating the skeeters!

Yes, most hikers today navigate with Far Out
@memathews
@memathews 8 күн бұрын
PCT indicators are at trail junctions and trailheads with North and South indicators, and then a confirmation indicator is around 100 feet further down the correct trail. There are usually no mile markers or paint blades, but sometime you can see the old tree blazes that were from the original trails that the PCT uses. As for completely covered trail, snow or water, or when FarOut gives up, you can always fire up the GPS unit or phone maps for trail confirmation, today's technology has really made wayfinding easy.
