Day 8 | Everest Base Camp Trek | CELEBRATING HER BIRTHDAY at EBC - Nepal vlogs

The day is finally here - arrival at Everest Base Camp! Hiking at 17,000 ft is HARD - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The day starts with a trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep (where we stayed overnight after getting back from base camp). After a quick rest, we trek the remaining 3 kms to base camp. All of this - and it's my (Melissa's) birthday! Rishi did some incredible planning to make sure we arrived at base camp on March 17th so we could celebrate my 34th birthday there.
Base camp is incredible - but not without its perils and surprises. Did you guys know they put a sign up in front of the infamous Everest rock?!

Thank you so much! And, yes, there was a lot of complaining about that sign off-camera (and not just by us). Even if they just moved it to the side so that it doesn't hide the rock - it'd be fine. I'm crossing my fingers that it's moved by the time you do EBC.

@@nicolaaslam6725 There was A LOT of complaining and frustration about the sign when we were there. So, I'm really hoping that whoever put it there gets the hint and moves it by the next trekking season. Hoping you have a slightly different experience in September!

Happy Birthday, Melissa! You're half my age! They put a $@&#ing sign right in front of the EBC rock? WTF? I had a great idea for a photo shot on the rock and somebody ruined it with that damn sign? Wasn't there ANY other place they could have put it? I'm pissed. Congrats on making it! It looks really hard. I hope it will be slightly warmer in mid-October. I know I'm obsessed about trekking poles, but I can't get over that you carried them everywhere, but I didn't see you use them at all!

I think we both agreed - the hike is obviously physically challenging, but our biggest challenge was adapting to the cold. I think you'll find it warmer in October - still cold, but not quite as cold as our experience. Re the sign - I don't know what they were thinking. They literally could have put it like 10 feet to right and it would have been fine. People were PISSED - every time someone new arrived, the first thing you heard was "what's up with the $@&#ing sign"?! I'm really, really hoping they move it by the time you make it there. A photo with the rock is obviously not the only reason people do the hike, but it's so iconic and a huge thing to look forward to. Re poles - hahahaha!! I love when you bring up the poles because they do just look like cool backpack decorations we carried with no utility. And, they *might* have saved Rishi from his fall. We do use them in upcoming videos, though - I promise!!

@@kineticpassports yeah, I hope every trekker complains so that they do move the sign! It's ridiculous! What were they thinking! I'm sure the sign looks great, but at the expense of pissing people off when the first see it? Jeez! Anyway... I'm looking forward to seeing you two using your poles! LOL!

2 comments about this: Why complain about the (stupid) sign or the (ugly) rock when EBC is actually further up the glacier, if there is an EBC, that is. Depending on the season. Just skip and skirt those and take pictures of the real thing. Rock is not EBC, sign is not EBC either (I have been there 3 times since 1985, also camped and climbed to Lho La pass 6000m behind the camp). Secondly: now I tell getting there is very easy. For me and us it has always been just a pleasant hike, took about 45-60 minutes between lodges from Dingpoche. 1:45 from Gorak Shep to EBC and about on hour back. This all depends on acclimatisation level and ability, not so much about fitness. But I guess vloggers need to make everything extra hard and exciting, even a relatively short hike like this.
