Congratulations Gabby, yeah, That VA/WV sign is small and easy to miss. Flip flop sounds like a great idea, getting back with your buddies will certainly make your hike more enjoyable. Also, if you hike southbound the PA section you skipped, after you summit Katahdin, you will probably meet up with other southbound hikers that started at Katahdin.

Trail gets wide with a couple ways to go at the VA /West VA line. Lots of people miss the sign. Five of us hiked past it and only 2 actually saw it. I missed it

As a midlife adult with kids, grandkids and so many responsibilities later in life completing the AT would be an impossible dream. Fight the doubts and push forward. You’ll never regret completing the trail but most certainly will if you don’t after you’ve come so far.
