That climb is tough. I think it was 2019 that someone had a fall with injury on that climb. Interesting explanation. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Thank you for this video of your 19+ mile, assorted rockiness levels, Day 88. You did great!!! 0:11 "Fallen Rocks" sign: if a rock fell all the way to the highway, one might say it "rocked and rolled". That guy 1:30 climbing barefoot: I think he may suffer the agony of de-feet. You found 9:38 Diamonds!!!🙂

I believe the ATC has recently changed their rocky trail classification to the 5stacks version😊

5 stack, thank you for all of the knowledge you're bringing to your videos. Im learning that I more appreciate hikers bringing a bit of education with their videos. Last year it Pink Hotdog on Playground Earth TV, Craig Mains usually brings trail knowledge and you with the geologist info. No long rants about nothing, just good educational things that many pass by but never really put a thought to. I've been through this half of PA for 20 years and this is really adding a new light to what used to be a simple little hike. Keep up the good work!

I much prefer hiking on rocks over ankle deep mud. I don’t mind the rocks at all. Nice video.

Help me understand why the rockiness is a good thing? Why would having the trail go through such areas be a good thing? Seems a good project would be for maintainers to move the rooks aside and create a smoother and safer path. And avoid the “class 3 & 4 “ areas altogether. I am supposing I must not get the aesthetic of the severe rock strewn paths. I have seen a few pictures of hikers post fall, and they do not look so good.

There are areas where a lot of work has been done, but the AT will never be ground to a smooth path. One way I look at it is that the non rocky areas in the valleys were all farmed, but the ridges were left alone because of all the rocks. They were the only undeveloped corridors for tge AT to use.

That climb out of Palmerton was terrifying for me. The rest of the day was a really pretty hike though. You are right. The rocks don’t end or begin in PA.
