At times I have said, I’m Job… for many reasons… the biggest is the loss of one of our 4 sons in a car accident. Oh the pain! Then 4 years later we lost my husband, the father of our sons to pancreatic cancer. My love of our Savior and our Mother Mary has carried me through this and so much more! Thank you, Fr. Mike! I’ve tried to do this before and “fell off the BIY wagon”! I’m committed to learning and growing with this and The Catechism in a year!

The book of Job begs the question: why do bad things happen to good people? In the end, this is a fallen world. We are called to show mercy and to expect justice in the eternal, and not the other way around.

I am reminded here of a trip I took to Amsterdam with a friend, this being quite a hedonistic city with relaxed drug laws and the infamous shop window sex shops. A man serving our food asked us what we planned to do with our time, his face was a picture when we told him we were looking at windmills and visiting a cheese and clog factory ! My point is that there is so much natural beauty in this world, we can experience a spiritual high if we open our eyes to the things of God and not of 'the world' it's a peace that the world does not have

Hello Father Mike! Thank you soooooo much, you have really helped me understand these particular sections of the Bible. I will be honest to admit that i was filling up with so much anger with the destruction of a City that could contain the innocent---it reminded me of present day wars etc where we go in to make just but soooo many innocent people die also. I was super angry and also sad when Lot offered his Daughters--as a Woman and survivor--It sends fury. The Daughters lying with their Father--well, that is disgusting beyond words. You have taught me that the Bible is not written with all the things right, just and approved by God----Connecting the dots per se with other books and narratives really helped! Thank you for opening my mind and heart as i was very much rooted in hurt when reading these particular parts. You are a blessing in my life---I pray for you daily!

I very much understand your anger & rage. I’ve been there myself. As Fr. Mike points out the Bible doesn’t give us nice neat answers. It gives us dilemmas & points us to God to claim Him as our own & just trust Him. God over & over shows us He loves us. He not only tells us but shows us until the climax, when Jesus gives His very blood & life for us. God bless you.🙏❤️

I agree and if we look closely those bad choices mentioned in the Bible brought painful consequences to others. So, our choices good or bad affect others. We are interconnected and we will suffer because, as y’all mentioned, it’s a fallen world. What we desire is God and being with him eternally but we keep thinking we may have it in this life.

My heart recoils in the human capacity for evil, the persistence in sin, and the stubborness to repent. Those who have evil disposition would not change their mind nor repent when faced with the truth. Instead, they would condemn and do greater evil to those who show them the truth and the good that they abhor.

An important analysis of Justice (giving what's due) vs. Vengeance (giving even that what's not due). The sinful origins of Moabites and Ammonites was well known but today we were reminded that Lot offering his daughters to the evil men wasn't right either. Perhaps that thinking corrupted his family. All of this reminds us why we need God's mercy and repentance. Job's sorrowful words reminds us of how God tests humans to make them better and also because God loves us. Fr. Mike is right about the importance of experiencing the journey with Job and waiting for the answer of Who rather than what. The proverbs remind us of treasuring God's words and wisdom to always be safe and successful by honoring God. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike and team Ascension. God bless you and protect you

Yikes, I remember some pretty messed up stuff happening in Genesis but I forgot how bad it gets. Like you said though, I think there is still something to learn in these chapters. In Genesis 18, God reminds Sarah to have faith that she will have a son even at her old age. Then Abraham challenges God's intentions to destroy the city of Sodom arguing that the righteous should be spared from God's wrath. The fact that Abraham is able to bring the total down from 50 to 10 suggests that God is willing to spare the righteous (may provide a basis for Eliphaz's argument in Job). Then in Genesis 19, the angels visit Abraham's nephew Lot to enact justice on the city of Sodom. The men of Sodom show their wickedness by threatening to break in and attack the angels who visited. As you mentioned, the resulting destruction of Sodom is God's justice rather than vengeance because the men had lived in sin. God fulfills his promise to Abraham by sparing Lot and Lot's daughters. However, then Lot's daughters commit incest in Zoar. I like how you pointed out this incest was also ultimately punished as their children became the Moabites and the Ammonites which were cursed as enemies of the Israelites. These chapters serve as a reminder not to live in sin. In Job Chapters 7-8, Job continues to express his understandable confusion with the brokenness of the world. He asks why people suffer and wonders if life is pointless to the point that he chooses "strangling and death rather than his bones." Once again, Job is unsure what he has done wrong. Bildad seems to repeat Eliphaz's argument, explaining that God defends the righteous with justice. He suggests Job is correct that their days are a shadow (breath) and that they should respect the wisdom of the many ancestors that preceded them. Bildad reminds Job that those who are truly blameless will be blessed by God. These chapters left me wanting more, I would like to know why good people suffer. It is a bit disappointing to hear the ending of this book is not conclusive, but I hope seeing Job's journey will give me some insight to help when I am suffering. Proverbs 2:1-5 suggest that if we seek wisdom for long enough, we will understand the fear of the Lord. I pray that by studying the Bible I will become God-fearing. Side note: Not sure if this was intentional, I found it ironic you said we should not seek the answer to Job's problems like "where is that nugget" (20:02) when Proverbs 2 verse 4 instructs us to search for wisdom like "silver" and "hidden treasures." (14:50) I understand that they're different contexts (some wisdom is beyond our understanding) but found the choice of wording to be a bit amusing. Day 9 - 1/9/2022

Today was so relatable.. I went thru lots of friends like Job's and there are still times I get so disappointed in people's responses especially when I'm at my lowest and am looking for an answer to something.. I also had Fr. Mike's expectations and after I fully read Job, it just felt underwhelming haha. Lets keep praying for each other, that God may grant us wisdom and that we may continue to grow in faith. It's tough everyday, you're not alone :)

God’s love allows time for the ‘unjust’ salvation…. And The ‘just’ to grow in humility ❤️🙏🏾 “But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:44-45‬

Jesus is trying to get your attention. It's a sin to call Mike "father". Matthew 23:8. Easter is not in the Bible, Passover is in the Bible. Christians honor Jesus resurrection and Passover and Feast of unleavened bread in the same week. Matthew 22:17.Exodus 12. Forced celibacy of priests and nuns, and forced poverty to give up their worldly possessions is not in the Bible. 1Timothy 3:2. Rosaries are forbidden. Matthew 6:7. You are supposed to use Anointing oil not Holy Water. James 5:14 and Exodus 40:9.

Love what Fr. Mike said about how he hoped the book of Job would tell him why evil existed the first time he read it - but it didn't because it's not a 'why' it's a 'who.'

@@EJ-gx9hl With all due respect, I doubt it. When a book, meant for the salvation of humanity is full of discpencies, historical and scientific errors as well as other mistruths, how could we possibly rely on this book as a true guidance?? Anyone in their right mind wouldn't go to a quack to treat them when ill so why go to a book which *CHRISTIAN SCHOLARS* themselves agree has interpolations? On the other hand, we have a book on this earth that is the ONLY text, religious or non religious, that can be proven to be unchanged, consistent with modern science and unchallenged😇 kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaKXg35_mKprf7c Now that to me, without inserting any personal views, beliefs or doctrines, meets the minimum threshold criteria for credibility . ☮️Peace

Pattern: If God doesn't move His plan in man's timeline, they try to do it and create greater problems. We can follow this same pattern, or learn to wait upon the Lord. In these troubling times, I understand the desire to help God along. God heard the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah. He still hears. He still metes out justice. Let's cry out daily, brothers and sisters
