Many still talk of the "Wahine Storm"- they call it that because a big ferry "The Wahine" navigation was blinded as it was about to enter Wellington Heads in rough weather. I do not recall the weather as bad when I went to bed in our very exposed house the night before. But I woke up to a real tempest. I set out for work, but turned back because my car was being dismantled by the wind - just like many houses I passed broken in the roadway. But by lunch time, it was a crystal clear day and the harbour very calm. So the cyclone you encountered is not unique in being followed in short order by fine calm conditions.

Oh yeah I remember the Cook Straight Ferry. Sometimes good sometimes bad. Can be extreme but only one ferry went down as far as I know in 1968.

@@SailingPivo Wahini, it was a shock that one, am sure it was 68 but maybe 69. People drowned although that was close to shore just inside the headland as I understand it and hit a rock shelf which likely was difficult to see in such a heavy storm. In those days there were ferries from Christchurch overnight also. My first time 68 and last time I was on the Picton ferry is probably 1986-7. Been on that ferry more times than I can remember chasing surf.

Those old ferrys have served the country so honorably its not funny, yes they are showing there age...but they were designed and built specifically for conditions seen on the straight and they still getting the job done!
