Legally, if your van is not certified self contained, then you are not allowed to freedom camp ie. you would need to go to commercial camp grounds. As for the freedom sites that have a stated number of vehicles allowed, there will be a designated area to park. First vehicles will obviously use the designated sites. Any vehicles not in a designated site face a fine if the ranger comes around.

No way will the ferry trip cost " thousands "..I took a car across a couple of years ago and from memory, I paid about $300, for the car and me. Obviously, a campervan would cost more, but nowhere near " thousands....its unfortunate you didn't get time to have a good look around...next time maybe.?
