it's very common in the Southern part of the United States. In the south, we're taught to call our parents and elders "sir" and "ma'am". not all the time, but if your mom says something like "Did you clean your room?" you respond with either "yes ma'am " or "No, ma'am." it's a sign of respect we're taught from a very early age.

Fleur, in the Southern states it is considered polite to reply to your elders using M'am and Sir. I am in my fifties and still use it when replying to people a generation up from me. It is expected. It shows respect for the person and shows that you are a person with manners. I would never just say yes or no to my parents. Always " Yes, M'am" or "Yes, Sir"

I grew up in the south and I was raised that saying Yes/No Sir and Yes/No Ma'am was polite when speaking to adults. I've since moved out of the south to Pennsylvania and it seems to be less common up here. Funny how different things are across cultures!

Can't believe it's still that cold there. it was in the 90's F in Florida today! Summer already! I think kids here can get a tattoo when there under age if they have their parents permission. It's also a very Southern thing to say, Yes Sir and Yes Ma'am to our Mothers and Fathers and really to anyone in their 40's and above. Love your doggies so much - Squidge looks to be feeling really happy.

I don't know if it's on Netflix, but I highly recommend a series called _Bron || Broen_ aka _The Bridge_ . Amazing series, first series begins with a body found in the middle of the bridge that joins Sweden with Denmark so both countries are forced to work together on the case. The acting is astounding and the episodes fly, it's a series that makes you binge-watch lol

In the northern eastern part of the US we do not address our parents with sir or ma'am unless you were brought up in a very strict military family. I call my parts mom and dad for silly names mamma bear and daddy'o, which they are fine with and they don't find it disrespectful. In regards to tattoos it is a big thing for teenagers to get tattoos and sometimes several. In certain states by law you have to be 18 yrs old under 18 you have to have a parent sign a waiver form. No signed form no tattoo.

Sir/Ma'am is more common in certain places in the US than others. I'm from the midwest and didn't really know anyone who called their parents that, but I have family in the south who do it sometimes, and my grandpa was in the military and sometimes my dad would call him "sir" growing up, but not as a regular everyday thing. Where I come from the big tattoos were only on the more rebellious kids, but it wasn't unheard of, especially in our last year of school and everyone turned 18. Anyways, I'm super glad I've been spending this semester studying abroad in London so I've been able to get my hands on both your brow collection and now your lipstick!! Congrats on everything Fleur!!!!

Here in the south most of us are raised saying ma'am and sir, it is considered a sign of respect especially for an older person. It was considered rude to address an older person by their first name unless instructed otherwise. Was also raised in a military family and when asked questions we responded with yes and no ma'am/sir; otherwise we referred or called our parents Mom/Dad. Tattoos are still illegal to get under the age of 18 unless accompanied by parent in the state of Texas.

Referring to any elder as Ma'am/sir is very common in the southern parts of the states , it's a sign of respect. I was taught not saying it actually disrespectful, but it matters much more to my grandparents than to my mother. As a child/teenager I also would never have called an elder by his/her first name, I had to stick Mr or Ms/Mrs in front of it, this was also a sign of respect, but I live in the Deep South , it's just a difference in the way we're raised.

I grew up in a military family and it was routine to say Yes Mama/Yes Sir or No Mama/Sir. As for the tattoos, where we live and with my kids, NO it is not common for kids to be covered in tattoos. So kids might have sneak little ones here or there, but not a full sleeve or a massive chest tattoo, but once someone hits 18 they can do what they want.

In the South, tattoos for teenagers can be mixed. I know many people who are 18-20 with a lot of tattoos. As long as you have a permission slip, you're good to get one. Honestly, it's just how you're raised: My parents frown upon them but I know a good many parents down here with sleeves.

yeah, the sir/ma'am thing is super cultural, specifically in the south. Growing up I never did it, then I moved to Alabama where most people expect it to a degree. Got in really big trouble with this old batty woman at school when I first moved down there ~10 years old. She asked me a question and I said 'yes'. "yes what!?" "Errr.... yes I wanted to go (or whatever the question was for)". After a few minutes of this she finally angrily told me "yes ma'am" for me to repeat. Later saw my friends doing it with their parents ("You need to clean the room" "Yes sir"). It was probably one of the biggest cultural shocks I dealt with, bc people thought I was being rude when, to me, I wasn't being rude at all, it just wasn't something I did. It's also super common for someone with military parents to do it.

I have noticed that in the Golden Age Hollywood films which I admire, the children often call their parents 'sir' or 'maam'. I found it odd when I first noticed it and I still do, though I don't know if it is a common trait or just a movie thing. Tattoos on under eighteen year olds here (Australia) are highly illegal, even the little ones, much less the big elaborate chest pieces. Have a lovely day and thank you for the video!

Referring to your parents as sir and ma'am is most typically seen in military families or deeply religious ones. The rest of us say Mom and Dad. As far as tattoos, it is becoming more common for kids to get tattoos however, it is still only a small percentage of people who have them at a young age.

Depends on where you live. In the south (Texas) it's standard form of courtesy to use ma'am/sir. My boyfriend is from the south but grew up mostly in the North (Michigan) and he says that it's almost the exact opposite, that people find it rude because it makes them feel older. So he had to adjust he's speech when he moved back and forth. Now the tattoos, idk a tattoo parlor who allow any 17 yrs old without a parent consent to get a tattoo.

I live in N. California and there are a lot it people under 18 with tattoos. Legality isn't important for certain things. Kids don't use sir and ma'am. I haven't heard that in decades, and it was because they were military kids. It's definitely a southern and military thing.

The Sir-thing is a way that people speak to people in a polite way, that is my experience with Americans. My ex-boy friend was from Texas and also from the military and he always called my dad 'Sir'. In the Netherlands we call our family and friends in the 3rd person. Only to older people and strangers we say the Ductch equivalent of Sir of Madame.

The Sir thing depends a lot on where live in the US, i'm from the midwest (Michigan) and it's not the norm for us. But for some of my friends in the south it is. As far as tattoos go technically you have to be 18 to get one on your own. So only people who are 18+ have big tattoos and that's about the time we leave school/start uni

To answer your question, it was normal to say "yes sir, no sir, yes ma'am, no ma'am" in my house growing up if I were in trouble. Like if my mom was angry at me for neglecting a chore I'd been asked to do, that would have been a time I'd be expected to say "yes ma'am." As far as tattoos go, I'm 29, and I've noticed that tattoos are more and more accepted, but like you, when I was in school, if you got one it had to be small and sneaky, somewhere you could easily hide it from parents. I think that probably varies depending on the region you're in within the States, I'm from the Midwest.

It's only normal (typically) in the southern states, or it used to be. Not sure if it still is. I don't know about the tattoos nowadays. When I was in high school, 11 years ago, there was a handful of people that did get tattoos. They were usually smaller ones though.

in my family it was very common to call them sir/ma'am and in my high school I had one friend w/ 11 tattoos and then many others with multiple. However, overall it was not as prevalent as it seemed in the show (I laughed at seeing that). love your videos!

You should give "Riverdale" a try. It's kind of a mix between "Gossip Girl" and "Pretty Little Liars" I feel. 😀

They called their parents sir because they were military & were scared of them, sir is a way of showing respect.

I agree with the sir comments below and that tattoos aren't generally common but for the character it made sense! They sorta implied his family was involved in a gang (when Clay sees them beating a guy up) so the tattoos could be reasonable that way!

+Alanah R it wasn't just the one character (think you're thinking of Justin?!) but there were quite a few with big, or numerous tattoos - just found it really interesting as in the UK, you can't get a tattoo unless you're 18, so most people who got them before then would do it sneakily and have little ones they could hide or that their parents wouldn't notice, there definitely wouldn't have been people with large tattoos on tattoos on the chest/arm/neck! Xx
