KZbin is pushing out this video, so I wanted to address a couple of things not mentioned: My job isn't just "shelving books all day" and to say that is honestly quite disrespectful. I did show only the "easy" parts of the job bc i dont want my employer to think I'm talking negatively online about it. 1) The job can be very physical and emotionally taxing. Being a library worker means you are also a social worker. I had to take mandated reporter training because i am constantly around children and people being neglected by their parents and the system. Homeless people pretty much stay in the building while we are open because we are the only place they are safe to go. 2) Just because you like to read doesn't mean this job is for you. It's rare that you'll be just sitting and reading during your shift at most places. Also, this job is not for introverts, it's a big customer service job, and you have to talk to people and run programs consistently. I'm socially exhausted every day coming home from talking so much. 3) Alot of my days are spent just helping older people learn how to turn on a computer. I also have to help veterans with the VA bc the VA doesn't give af about them. 4) Being a library worker is very rewarding because i actually feel like I'm doing something to help the community, but you have to deal with alot of BS. Also, I got very lucky to have good management and great coworkers, but that's very rare. There is a lot of turnover at the other libraries due to drama and bad management. Thats why i said that my experience with the job is a positive one, but it may not be like that everywhere. Libraries are one of the only places nowadays where everything is literally free. We are here to be a resource and help people the best we can, but that also means that we work on a strict budget and we are trying our best with little money to do so. Thanks for watching 🩷 Rant over

Thank you for posting this. I will be a year working at my cities library in Feb. We have two locations and we get transferred back and forth. I am at my main location 90% and it’s like the city Hub. Always busy, between customer service, shelving, computers and the children department there’s ALWAYS something to do. Processing our Interlibrary loans is probably one of the most taxing tasks while also trying to help patrons constantly with their needs! I got this job thinking it was so low-key but honestly people do not realize what it takes to work in one. I was so overwhelmed my first couple months there, Working a full time shift with the public is very exhausting on top of learning 101 new skills. I am so thankful for having amazing coworkers who make the days worth it!

Good luck. I was a lib ass and loved it. Interview tip, do not say you want the jog as you love to read (you aren't being paid to read - they say). Say it's because you're sociable, love helping people, buidling a sense of community, working with you to promote skills etc etc. When you get the job, remember to smile smile smile, i used to get pain in my face from smiling so much but i got a lot of complements from customers, both written and verbally to bosses, for being so friendly, approachable (in non-work life, er not so much lol). Fingers crossed for you.

This is such a great video! I’m actually just about to leave to head to my own job at a local library where I’m part time and my actual job is to put the books away we are called Pages. I know the pain of kids books they were my least favorite cart to put away when I first started. I do dream of getting a full time job at my library one day as a circulation assistant where we deal with the books in the catalog more and the checking in and out of the books. Thank you for showing part of your day at your library!!

Hi Alyssa! I loved this video! Thank you for sharing what it’s like to work as a library assistant. I’m actually a library technician student myself! Not sure if other countries have this type of credential, but in Canada we have a 2-year diploma called “Library and Information Technology,” or some variation of that title for the program. I’m in my second year and I’m about to do my practicum in April. I don’t have a lot of customer service experience which intimidates me, because I my studies have taught me a LOT of what really goes on as a library worker. I still have a long way to go, but I was wondering if you had any advice for aspiring/up-and-coming library workers? And what are ways that you cope with the emotional labour of working in a library? Sorry this was so long.😅 Thank you!

i think people vastly underestimate the size of library collections, also! to a patron, it may only look like a fairly manageable collection but when you're shelving, maintaining and tidying a collection of 20k+ books, it's tedious work! quite often we will weed books and, in doing so, have to shuffle the entire collection along the shelves. that means you're physically moving 20k+ books, often academic texts that are CHUNKY, and it's painful! there have been days where i've woken up with very very achey limbs because of it.

You should look into those online universities, where you can already get a lot of credits for your work experience. And it’s virtually free (meanin extremely cheap). Like university of the people and other ones like these. Maybe you can get a degree with little work and effort and then get paid a few dollars more.

Why do you need a masters degree for a library?
@ReadwithAlyssa3 күн бұрын
Idk man that's just how it works lol
@Missginalove3 күн бұрын
idk why for regular public libraries but Being a librarian is more than just checking out books at bigger libaries. Librarians need special skills to organize and manage information, help people with research, and use technology to run digital systems. They also create programs for the community, able to sort throught fake news and preserve old or rare materials,. for example if you go to college campus the Librarians are suppose to help you structure essays and tell you where to find information to support your thesis. but for public Librarian its stupid why you have to have a degree
@ReadwithAlyssa3 күн бұрын
I do a majority of these things at my library as well, the only thing I don't do is preserve old materials, that would be cool though
@naminex3xКүн бұрын
It can be beneficial for some library positions. I'm a reference librarian for a special collections library and while I don't have an MLIS, I do have a masters degree in a field relevant to the content of the collections. The majority of the people I work with are professors/academics and PhD candidates. Having a solid background in research has really aided me in being able to do my job and do it well. That being said, I certainly don't think it's needed for all library positions and people are certainly capable of learning the skills needed without multiple degrees! I think the MLIS requirement for most library jobs is unfair and unnecessary.
@RawSiennaКүн бұрын
In the school districts in the K-12 setting in my area they won’t hire you without a masters degree, and their job does differ from an assistants job. The Librarians that work in the school districts in my area are responsible for teaching classes as part of the related arts track on top of their typical duties as a Librarian. So they need experience in teaching, creating lesson plans, IEPs cause they’re accountable for providing the accommodations and modifications as well for the students that they see since they see the whole school, classroom management, and what eve special projects they have like the school wide spelling bee, etc. It’s a lot. They also assist a lot with IT as well. The library assistants that work with them are not responsible for all that. I’ve worked in 4 school districts and a librarians position has looked very different depending on the district they’re in.
