First, as a fellow Orthodox person, I just love the way you explain things in our religion. You are such a smart, informed, humble, positive, joyous example of an Orthodox Jew. I love that you are part of our community and that you have this channel. Second, living in Israel, I don't have much access to Trader Joe's. What spices are in the salmon rub? I make salmon all the time and could make my own spice mix, if I know what to include. Thanks.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate you :) This is what I found online about the salmon rub: Made with a base of brown sugar, and supported with seasonings like smoked paprika, dried thyme, kosher salt and black pepper. Hope that helps!

I've been homeschooling for almost 20 years. We have an online database for all of our books, so that I can access it from thrift stores, book stores, and library sales. Categories can be good, but they're constantly changing! I just have extra columns to stick those into. It's been a big help!

Hi Chana. The Pollyanna book is indeed an abridged version, rewritten for children as an introduction to the "real" book. I had several books in the same series when I was young. I recognized the cover style immediately. If I recall correctly, some or all of them are rewritten by ghostwriters; they tell the same stories as the "real" equivalents, but they're quicker, easier reads with simpler language and such. Enjoy your books! 📚

I love library sales! My library will sell books for 25 cents for a paperback and 75 cents for a hardcover. Definitely the best deal on books, even better than the thrift store. I've been doing Sourdough for a year now, and my first couple loaves were rough. I've learned so much about Sourdough that I feel so much more comfortable with it now than the beginning. I love that you're setting that example for your kids--to push through something hard until you master it.

Happy belated Rosh Chodesh Adar 2! What are your Purim plans? We're going to a New York city themed Purim party that the Rabbi and his wife are hosting at the Orlando Science Center which is my grandchildren's absolute favorite place in the world. They can't wait! My youngest keeps asking how many days 😅! That's such a great haul from Jersey! Love the salt bowl! We were just talking about getting something like this a couple Shabboses ago. Seeing your laundry pile reminds me of my task for today. Going to try yet another organization for my clothes. I ordered some new clothes for myself and they are being delivered tomorrow or Thursday so I've got to organize what I have before they get here. I loved taking my daughters and grandchildren to the library and the book sales. My grandchildren are more into digital books now and they organize their own on their phones or computers. Times definitely change! Baby Firefly is getting so big! Looking back over the years, I can definitely say... don't blink, they grow up so fast 😢 😀!

I finally found a recipe for 5-minute artisan ok knead bread that can be made up in advance and stored in the fridge for up to two weeks and you on,y pull out the amount you want to use for a meal. Iris loves the library and it is combined with an art gallery so we always go upstairs and wander through the exhibits. I never did that with my own kids because I thought that you had to 'know' about art but we simply walk and look and when she or I find something we are interested in, we stop and chat about it. It is so stress free and now Iris feels very comfortable in there and at the library. She also has her own card, like your kids, and it makes her feel special. I think it is a lovely thing for kids to do and clever of libraries to help promote interest in borrowing. Those books were all fabulous finds and all the classic, older publications. The Dell Yearling editions are a great find. Yay Chana!

Glad to see you had a wonderful and safe trip. I was wondering though what do you do with your sourdough starter during pesach? Do you throw it out and start over?
@jaroffireflies
@jaroffireflies 6 ай бұрын
That's a great question. I hadn't thought about that. I will probably keep it in the fridge for that week with some flour on top. I can sell it so I won't own it, and we keep a fridge that we sell the contents of and tape shut for Passover so we will do that.

Why not dewey decimal at home as a learning task?
@jaroffireflies
@jaroffireflies 6 ай бұрын
For a library our size it’s really not necessary. This color coding really meets our needs right now. Plus Dewey only assigned one number to Jewish books, 269, and we have over 1000 Jewish books in our home, which means I could never reasonably catalog our other books. Jewish libraries tend to opt for a different numerical system when going that route

I'm not sure this belongs here, but I couldn't find a spot to ask. My question is what are the prayers for women to be said daily? My research started with Modeh Ani. I know there must be more, besides the morning one in waking. I'm starting a notebook/journal for my walk in the Torah. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

My sister complains about too many children's books too. They can only fit so many of them in their tiny starter home. And the two nephews have to move in together, and the third one will take the other room. We're going to find out the gender next week we think. My Kindle will put the book you are reading up front of the line. And there's a search feature where you can look up a book you think you have. Chana, I used to volunteer for the library. I can't anymore because I can't read a bar code.

I am so pleased you devote time to books. Taking the children to the library and having a strong home library at home are both so important to their learning! Your young son loved reading time, a strong sign he will love reading. And I had sour dough bread when I visited San Francisco on a trip to visit a relative! It was delicious. I think you have a very rich life with your family. Judaism is made to feel good and special in your home!

If you cover your books with clear adhesive vinyl (Contact paper), they will last longer. If they really dirty, you'd can clean them with a towel with a little bit of rubbing alcohol before addressing my the vinyl. The bread looks good. Shalom!

Sourdough. 🤪 I have tried. I had 3 starters never start. I bought a dehydrated starter, got it up to speed(or so I thought) and tried baking with it. I got 2 really great hockey pucks. I don't know if I'll try again. I don't know that sourdough is for me. I am a pretty good baker but sourdough is maybe not my thing. Yours looked great and I really enjoyed this glimpse into your day.
