@@byron1368 It is definitely a great Trade to be in . Especially because in a few years from now there will be a huge demand for electricians, this translates in to higher wages for us. The reason for the upcoming demand is due to the baby boomer electricians are all starting to retire. As far as schooling is concerned, unfortunately there are three sessions of school that you will need to complete before you can write your CFQ Exam . Plus you need to acquire 9000 hours of on the job experience as an electrical apprentice. It goes by pretty fast and the schooling is Not very difficult . It really only consists of 3 Ten week sessions so it not a lot. Although I have heard that they college of Trades is contemplating added an additional 4th session as they do crame in a lot of learning in that period of time. As far as pay is concerned , you do get payed very well . As am apprentice you actually get paid pretty well also. A licensed electrician can make any where in between $70,000.00 to 150,000.00 a year . Put it this way , if you are with the electrical union you usually make anywhere from 35 to 47 dollars an hour. Plus union company often give you allowances for boots and safety equipment plus health benefits. You also tend to receive a far amount of free trading . For example , I have my working at heights cert, my aerial platform cert, ( boomlifts etc.) Advanced First aid , Bucket Training and CVOR TRAIN CERT, ACT & Reg’s cert. , Supervisor cert, and so on.. All that training and certifications were paid for by my employer. So to sum it up, I definitely recommend this as a great career choose . You being as young as you are , If you start now you will do very well . Plus after becoming a licensed electrician, after a few years you can go after your masters license which opens even more doors and access to an even greater revenue stream . Pull permits , start your on company etc. I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors , If you ever have any question feel free to reach out to me and I will do the best I can to help get you some answers. Get proper tools (cheap pair of side cutters and do most of the cutting with them, since you will blow them up), learn everything you can without cheating. You can be a dumb ass and you will get paid like a dumb ass/get fired or you can be smart and know your shit and get above average pay. I started at 20 an hour while most people in my area get 15.

Hit Eplie Honestly it depends on what company’s you do work for, some company’s have really tall oil or water tanks & some have smaller tanks. Average tank is like 16ft so up on the catwalk it’s not bad man. We did work on some really tall tanks that were easily 60-70ft high and had a small catwalk that was a little sketchy haha. I could send you pics if you want. Most of the time you have a man lift to get you in the higher areas but yes it pays really good, most guys doing it where I’m at say they hated Residential work

I haven't even gone to college yet but have lots of domestic and commercial experience... Not a fan of changing florescent lights to led bulbs.. I know its easier for you but changing the whole fitting is just as easy and also looks better on your part.. Costumer sees a brand new light fitting installed inside of pricking around with connectors and wires.. Better in the long run and more economical 👍 but that's just my experience from nixers myself.. But good on you for posting this it will give a good idea to students coming through school into what they will be doing if they wanna be an electrician 👍

The important thing is that your being a productive member of society. The company I work for, dosen't do many of these monotonous retrofits because of companies like this. Does it take away work ? I don't really think so. Lighting is just one aspect of my job and changing light fixtures or ballasts an even smaller portion. It's safe enough as long as the original electrician did their job properly, the breaker should trip. Should that happen thats a potential service call for us.

Whenever i need to replace a ballast or something like that i always just replace the whole fixture. In my area a new ballast is only about 10$ less than an entire new housing that comes with new terminals and everything. End up just changing out the entire thing in order to get all brand new parts instead of just a new ballast. Start to finish i can remove and install a 2x4 fixture in about 10min

Familiarize yourself with the tools, learn some basic terminology, expect to make mistakes, safety first, slow is faster if it means you don't mess up, the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask, get good shoes, don't underestimate your local climate, and even if someone tells you a wire or circuit is dead, test it anyways.
