What’s up future sparkies?
My name is Stephen and this is my second video in a series about how to become an apprentice electrician. This is a fantastic career and one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. If you’re asking yourself if you should become an electrician, the short answer is yes.
In this video I give you a rundown of what to expect when taking the IBEW aptitude test. This test consists of two sections: Math and reading. I let you know what my experience was like when I took the test and give you some tips to help you study and pass this test with flying colors.
The math portion of the test will include questions about but are not limited to:
Whole Numbers
Multiplying Decimals
Dividing Decimals
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Multiplying Fractions
Rational and Irrational Numbers
Positive and Negative Numbers
Exponents
Basic Algebra
Distributive Property
Linear Equations
Factoring
Multiplying Factors
Factoring Quadratics
Proportions
Equivalent Ratios
Missing Numbers
Sequences
Graphing functions
I hope you find this video to be informational and beneficial. Let me know down in the comments what other electrical related videos you’d like to see from me. I’d like to be a resource for future and current electricians and help out with any questions they might have.
Please subscribe to my channel so you can stay updated with my future videos. In these early stages of my channel, any likes, comments, shares, or subscriptions help out a ton.

@Joe Williams I know this comment section is old as dirt, but have you really never been told this as a kid/young adult while in school? "YOU better remember your times table because you won't have a calculator in your pocket when your grow up." Or my personal favorite "They're not going to let you use a calculator when you get to high school." I don't know where those teachers went but a calculator was given out for almost every single test I took in high school and I wasn't in "special classes". I'm not trying to say it's not useful to be good at doing mental math, but some teachers made some real dumb arguments that didn't add up. No pun intended.

Finished the test, found out two days later that I passed! I'd say this vid has good recommendations BUT after scouring these comments for months I'm worried that with only 36 questions the Algebra portion has some legit variation between subjects covered. As an avid reader, Reading Comp was a cakewalk. I had enough time to go through every question twice with 5 min to spare. Algebra though was a different story.I studied regularly and the questions imo were Advanced difficulty versions of algebra problems. Optimistically I counted 29/36 questions that I felt confident in my answers. The alegraba section FOR ME was basically 4 sections: -->sequences (mostly easy but some tough ones like 38, 41, 46, 53, 67...) -->lots of PEMDAS (plug in variables and solve in correct order) make sure you can multiply/divide fractions/decimals, understand square roots. -->"which of the following statements is true for this formula" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX_Mkmd-ncR0mKM at 8:04 is the best example to explain) -->rise/run linear equations and function "f(x)" tables (you get a data table or graphed line and have to select which other data table, equation or graphed line is equivalent) Khan is the best resource for sure: Make sure you can get 90%+ consistently on Course Challenges for Pre-Alg and Alg Basics then move to Alg 1 and focus on: -Linear equations and Graphs -Forms of Linear equations -Quadratics: Multiplying and Factoring There was an exponential function question that I just biffed, no idea so I guessed. Knowing how to solve is helpful but understanding the theory so you can apply to complex questions is key. A simple "solve for f" question will have f on both sides of the equation, one side squared, the other divided. Hope this helps anyone else there, Thanks to Mad Electrician for this vid. I've watched it at least 20 times. I'll update this comment when I find out whether I passed/failed. Good luck to everyone out there!

Thank you for this breakdown. I’m trying to gage how much studying I should do. If I took pre calc in high school and let’s say all the formulas would come back to me in a few nights, do you think I should not take it lightly and put in the extra hours or is it easy enough to cram a few days before?
@Artecus
@Artecus 2 жыл бұрын
@@DubG89 You should study as much and as hard as possible for two reasons: 1) to fend of multiple choice distractors and 2) each question is timed to 1 min 24 seconds. I have a university degree in a technical subject, and I solved many hundreds of problems over two weeks for five hours per day. And I worked hard to minimize mistakes and to work as fast through the problems as possible.

@@MadElectrician Well, I did get my letter in the mail about my score, but it stated that they won’t have interviews set until after the new year. I don’t want to just sit around until then, I feel like I should do something productive to possibly gain a little edge in the competition. Any recommendations for something I could do around my full work schedule?
@MadElectrician
@MadElectrician 3 жыл бұрын
Right on, that’s actually pretty soon. If you haven’t seen it yet, you should watch my Applying For IBEW Apprenticeship video. I actually go in depth explaining ways to gain an edge on the competition and make you look like the perfect candidate for the apprenticeship. Basically I would recommend using this time to work on doing things that you can add to your portfolio that you’ll bring with you to your interview. I explain all of that in the video. Side note, you might not actually be able to hand out individual portfolios to the interview committee during this time due to the pandemic. I would just be mentally prepared for that and maybe come prepared with a portfolio with very enlarged photos so that you can still show the interview committee what you want them to see without having to hand them the portfolio. Hope that helps! Also of course just be prepared for any potential interview questions. The two big questions to have a rock solid answer for are: 1. Why do you want to be an electrician? 2. Why should we choose you? Also if possible try to schedule a mock interview. I did that and I highly recommend it 👍🏼

I got connected with someone from the IBEW Sisters of Solidarity prior to my interview and they really really helped me with preparing for my interview. They gave great advice for putting together my portfolio and what the questions would be like. I felt like I did really well on my interview, but a couple of days later I received notification that I was ranked in the 700s for the queue list. It was a little discouraging, but I understand that I do have a lack of experience in working in the trade fields specifically. I'm currently trying to get on the book as a material handler or join the LiUNA local 737 as a laborer so that I can re-interview in 6 months and better prove myself that I'm a willing and capable candidate.

@@Prestige2Worldwide2 That is great news, I am so happy for you. You will murder the interview in a few months. Luckily, I was admitted to both unions (electrical and line) and the line union called first. In fact, they spent more time chatting with me. After speaking with three lineman about their careers, asking many questions, writing everything down, searching and inputing data onto an Excel spreadsheet to compare the pros and cons of both, researching again, I was sworn in to the lineman union several weeks ago. What an unpredictable world: prepared so much to be an electrician only to forego and train to be a lineman!

The best test advice imo was bookmarking the difficult questions. This is great because your other questions may have pieces in them that can help solve your more difficult questions. Worst case, coming back to a question is always better than wasting time stressing about the answer.

Havent taken any tests to be an electrician but i have taken 11 tests for being a mechanic(passed 9 of them), i found if you know your stuff, you fly by the test, if it makes anyone feel any better, i failed one test by 1 question(got 33 and needed 34), took it the second time and only missed 5 questions(got 45 of 50, only needed 34) but i flew through it, hope it helps/inspires others to keep going/try again Im really looking into being an electrician now, thanks so much for all this information that you put out there, super helpful and took away the "new-ness" of being an electrician, makes me feel like ive been doing it just with automotives, thanks so much!

I just finished my test up at ibew local 48! I thought I did pretty well although I did not fully take into account the speed of the test. Some of the series questions took a little more time than I had anticipated and I had to rush through the last ten or so questions. Nothing super difficult, nothing really past algebra 1, but I was taking my time "showing my work" so to speak-- even though it was all multiple choice since I didn't want to miss a step but that cost me time in the end. The reading portion was really straightforward as long as y'know, you can read and understand properly. I finished that section with 15 minutes to spare. at local 48 there's laptops now to take the test on now but you can still request to do a paper test at a later time if you wish. With the computer test they say you'll be notified if you fail pretty quickly and if you pass they'll give you an interview time which may take several weeks. I didn't get a fail notification so I'm assuming I passed! Looking forward to my interview now.

Thanks so much for the insight man! I got the results for my test and I passed! I took it for California and for some reason it doesn't say what was my score but it does say I can book my interview. Hardest part about the test imo is the short amount of time they give you. It's tough to do math equations on such short amount of time. I read in the comments that someone recommended the iprep course and I bought it a night before the test. That course was a life saver because it helps you study exactly what's on the test instead of you wasting time studying subjects that you won't see. HIGHLY RECOMMEND spending the money on it. Also we used computers for the reading portion and unfortunately I wasn't able to underline important sentences so just be aware of that. Thanks again!!!!

After taking the test (and passing with an 8!) I quickly realized from conversation that doing a quick brush up on algebra if you've been out of school for a while will give a HUGE advantage. It seemed like most people were stressed and under-prepared for the math portion. There were also a few that were there for a retake after not passing previously. I also learned that covering the basics in each section of the Kahn Academy Algebra 1 course was plenty. The more difficult parts of the course weren't even covered in the test, I came out of the test realizing I was actually OVER-prepared. I gotta say taking your Kahn Academy recommendation was definitely the right choice. Now just waiting for my interview date (2-4 months)

@@niuatoa5284 if you're referring to the list of courses, yes. I'd go straight to the course test for pre-algebra and see how you do there. Just wanted to say thank you! You're videos have been extremely helpful in my journey to gain acceptance into the apprenticeship program at my Local 275 in Michigan. This video was clutch in helping me prepare for the aptitude test (especially the tip about Kahn Academy)! I spent about an hour a day studying algebra and reading comprehension for 2 months or so leading up to the aptitude test. It definitely worked! I don't know my exact results, but I was scored 9 out of 9 and I definitely credit your guidance! On Kahn Acadamy, I thoroughly studied the Basic Algebra, Pre Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry Units (ended up not really needing the Geometry for the aptitude test, but I'm sure it will come in handy later). The only thing that Kahn didn't really have good material for was sequences, but I was able to find other helpful KZbin videos on those and had no problem with them on the test. In fact, studying paid-off so much that I didn't even have to guess on any of the test questions since I was able to work-through and solve every one... My pre-interview is coming up on 4/13/2023 and Official Interview on 4/20/2023, so now I'm just going over my answers to probable interview questions and organizing my portfolio. Thanks again Stephen. You've been an invaluable resource.

@@TheOnlyShane Okay, great. Now that you have time, please do this: go to the OSHA Education Center online and pay, get certified for OSHA-10, OSHA electrical, and OSHA CPR AED. We do this in the apprenticeship anyway, and this will get you a leg up against the other applicants, that is if your local offers a petition to re-interview in six months. If you can, either enroll in two community college electrical courses or try to get a part/full-time position at an electrical contractor; your local posts the union contractor list on their website. In my local, applicants can petition to re-interview in six months if they either enroll in two community college trade courses or seek electrical construction entry level work. Other than waiting for positions to open so that your 140 ranking gets to zero, what do you think about the above I wrote?

In Ohio it's different for a union job where i applied. Its math only and its through Aleks. After you're done you get your results instantly and if you fail the first time you just need to complete a certain amount of hours on the Aleks website. I think only 5, best thing to do is take it once if you fail you get access to Aleks for a year for only $50 (cost to take the test). The first time I took the test I got a score of 5 and you need a minium of 20 to pass. Second time after I took it I got a score of 27. Also its not multiple choice.

Just got notified that I passes my aptitude test for Local 48! Something new that I was absolutely not prepared for was that my test was done on a laptop. I took the same test 2 years ago at the same location and it was on paper. I can say for sure it's the same test. Personally I found it to be slightly annoying to test this way because I like to hold my scratch paper right next to the test. looking back and forth to the screen took critical seconds off my time. Before the test began they DID give us the option to take it on paper but that would have required a rescheduling of your test date. I opted to continue since I don't think my nerves could have handled any more waiting. I applied late November and I'm interviewing next month! MUCH faster process than I expected.

When I took my test, it was all on the computer. So you're not able to underline anything, and you couldn't see the questions all at once. What I did was click through all the questions and then read the passage. I finished the reading in 26 minutes so I had an additional 25 minutes to go over my answers. The passages were about waters special properties, the doppler affect, tea tree oil as a first aid, and the Venus fly trap. The math had graphs with xy tables, sequences, analyzing functions, and "plug and chug" is what I call equations where you have to plug in numbers to find the variable, or manipulate the formula to find a variable (no numbers given)

@@angelramos4760 I highly recommend purchasing iprep, it's $39.99 and it has questions that are very similar to the aptitude test. It gives you 3 simulation math tests and 3 simulated reading tests. You can go through all the example questions on it and it helped me tremendously. Along with iprep I used khan to gain an understanding of the material. The iprep has a free practice tests that's like 5 questions, you can do that a couple times but it's worth the 40 bucks for sure.
