I know this comment is 6 months old and maybe you’ve found the career of your dreams by now, but in case you haven’t, I just wanted to give some unsolicited advice. I’m a recent college grad and also a claims adjuster. I saw your comment and just wanted to share something I wish someone had told me. You said college isn’t an option for you right now and some people may look at that as a negative. However, if you’re bouncing back and forth with what you want to do and you haven’t incurred any educational debt, you are actually in a good spot compared to someone who is bouncing back and forth with what they want to do and has incurred a mountain of student loan debt. If you don’t know what you want to do, I would look into getting in the tech industry and getting some certifications. You can go into cybersecurity or something more like being a developer or engineer. I would encourage you to look into getting your A+ certification from CompTIA as it’s the most basic exam and will build up your knowledge on computer hardware and networking. Many companies will also pay for employees to get their certifications if you can find a job as an entry level help desk analyst or something. Or you could try learning some beginner friendly coding languages like SQL, HTML, and CSS just to get your feet wet. These languages are intuitive and very easy to learn and don’t require a ton of technical knowledge so it’s a good starting point. If you’re interested in tech even just a little, I encourage you to pursue it. There is so much money in tech and also freedom to work from home, do consulting, work part time, etc. for A LOT of money. After getting entry level certs and a good job after a few years, you can literally get offers for tech jobs starting in the $150k-$200k range and that is just base salary. I am a bodily injury claims adjuster and I seriously hate it. I’m on the phone a lot, people don’t understand the claims process and get frustrated with you very easily, claims gets little recognition, and it is also hard to move around after being a claims adjuster because you learn a lot of “soft” skills, but really not much in the way of hard skills that you can apply to other jobs and industries. I am great at my job and constantly receive praise and accolades from my manager but I’ve been in the role for 2 years and been looking for other roles within my company and the people I have interviewed with do not value claims as a part of the insurance organization even though claims is the life blood of insurance. Claims is a dead end, especially if you don’t have a 4 year degree. Tech will teach you hard skills that you can transfer across many industries. And that industries values experience and skills vs a degree. I work at Fortune 100 insurance company as a claims adjuster and our technology and industry technology is seriously lacking. If you’re interested in insurance, there are tons of opportunities to merge tech and insurance together. Having some skills in tech can really earn you high paying jobs in the future. Claims is pretty much a dead end. If you are fine making like $80k-$110k (pretty much highest salary) as your max after 5-10 years in the industry, then you should look into being a claims adjuster. But if you want more financial opportunities, then I would stay far away from claims. Most adjusters I know and work with are stressed on a daily basis and seriously behind on their caseload. Covid changed a lot of things for the insurance industry as many companies offered their employees early retirement or a lot of people were laid off or left on their own and a lot of companies haven’t restructured or hired enough people to make up for the “brain drain” that’s been occurring the past few years making claims a very stressful position. I have 3 friends from college who started in claims around the same time I did, some in the same company, one in a different company and after 1-2 years, we are all looking for other jobs. I just wanted to share a different point of view and highlight other paths as well.

@@Dudebro123 this was really helpful. I hope she saw it but I needed it as well. I graduated college in 2020 and have been bouncing back and forth between what career path to stick to. I haven’t found it yet 🫠 I think I just had a different expectation of how college and getting a job that actually can give me a comfortable life looked like. I’m lucky because I haven’t had to repay my loans because of the pandemic. But, my most recent role was insurance sales and let’s just say it was not for me. Now I’m looking for what else I can do. I was already thinking about tech but I need time and money and a plan to stick to so I can make it happen. I’ve been so stuck on I need to be happy where I’m working and at this point I just need something that will pay the bills and give me the 3x rent these people asking for. I can focus on what makes me happy later. Miss ma’am is in a great position right now at 20 years old. Do not be in a rush, please take your time and think these things through before you end up in debt or in a weird place in life and financially having to figure things out like so many of us that got the degree without a plan or without getting a job that pays a livable wage. If you do get the chance to go to school, please get a degree in something that’s lucrative in this day and age like nursing or computer engineering or anything tech based.

I agree with you there working in this industry I can see why some people have a bad taste in their mouth about insurance companies but it’s only fair to advocate for our customers since they pay premiums for us to help them when they have an emergency. I ran into your videos searching up like a more thorough description of the job and so far your videos are it girl, I’m definitely going to subscribe 😊 I’m in the process for commercial claim adjuster training position, I already passed the assessment and the questions recording and I’m about to have my actual live interview with a manager next week and I’m a little nervous but I’m ready for it. I seen some people say that it’s like a call center role but the way you explain it makes it seem like in reality it’s more of outgoing calls and then the incoming calls are more return calls or of the contractors or team you are working with for the claim, is that right? You will have days where you’re getting an influx of calls but if you’re on top of your desk and addressing your claims you won’t have that situation much. Yeah I’m sure both have their pros and cons! The time to get through claims varies a lot actually. I handle more complex claims right now, so the average claim is a minimum of 3 months because my insureds usually have temp housing. Thank you so much for watching!

Can you please elaborate on not having to climb roofs while doing field inspections? That’s the only thing stopping me from pursuing field inspections. Any advice on where to seek employment? Sure, typically there are roofing contractors that work with the insurance company that can complete these inspections for us. They will do the climbing and prepare a report with their expert opinion. Also most insurance companies only allow the adjusters to climb one story, non steep roofs anyway if it’s required. As far as seeking employment I wish I had better advice but I look on the same sites as everyone else. I find luck though by going on the actual site to look for jobs (ie progressive, geico, Allstate) but I will also do google and indeed searches when I’m in the market. It’s tough right now because some places have moved out of certain territories but if you keep at it you’ll for sure find something. Also check your states department of insurance sites, sometimes they have roles too. Thank you so much for watching and I appreciate the comment ❤️

I noticed when you were explaining the situation with the roofer doctor, you said something like I have to get it touch with the roofer, because I am not getting up on no roof”. Is there a way around getting on roofs? I will have my license by next week, but the one thing I am genuinely nervous about is climbing on roofs (especially steep ones) as I worked for a contractor before and HATED the steep roofs. I froze once and could not move for 20 minutes. Is that something that will be debilitating to my career? I know there is ladder assist, equipment, etc, but want to have a good first impression as I am a brand new adjuster. Give me the honest truth! 😂 I don’t think I will be doing at-home positions, as the guy J will be shadowing is in-field currently working a storm and has never worked from home.

Good question!! Getting on the roof is something that’s uncomfortable for a lot of adjusters. Usually if you’re required to get on one, there are strict rules like you can go over 1 story and you can only walk on a certain type of material. Anything outside of that would require a roofer. Also if you feel unsafe for whatever reason you don’t have to get up there. Most companies that won’t be a deal breaker but you will usually have to show that you can open and close a ladder and climb safely to move forward. Good luck to you!!

So yes my company provides the phone, car and computer (if you’re work from home they will provide your phone and computer). The only time you use your own items is if you’re independent working as a contractor so you’ll be fine.

I have been researching getting my license for a month now, but I’ve been unable to make a decision. I taught for 9 years, and I also have done medical sales for 2, but I don’t think I want to continue in sales. My question is about the hours you work…is it 40, 50-60? And do you make overtime. Some people say they love this job, and then other half complain about the work load. I’m okay working over 40 hours, but only if I’m getting paid for it. What are your thoughts?

I did sales for some time too and that’s what triggered me to look into insurance. So I typically work 40 hours but when it’s busy I’ve for sure worked 50-60 hours sometimes. Most jobs I’ve worked I got OT but I worked one salary job as an adjuster and it sucked because I constantly worked 50+ hours with no OT and that made no sense. I’ll say this, it’s not easy. There have been days where I questioned life and there have been days where I feel it’s a breeze. You will feel it all at some point if you’re here long enough. These days though because I’m so deep in it I have routines and systems that I’ve learned so I can stay on top of my work and not hate life. If you’re willing to put in the work and stick it out it can be great. I suggest researching company culture and really pay attention to your manager’s temperament, that can make or break your experience. Good luck to you and let me know if you have other questions.

To answer your question about math yea there is math because you’re going to be paying people and putting together estimates and such but it’s not what you think. We have so many templates and programs to add stuff up so any time you’re actually doing math it’ll be simply adding and subtracting. Even if you have to multiply or divide it’s super basic. Don’t let that intimidate you if you really want to explore the role. Good luck to you 💕💕

I have a company car with a gas card they provide me. I don’t have to worry about maintenance either I just go to one of their approved vendors for brakes, oil changes, tune ups, etc and it’s charged to the company. Personally, I wouldn’t be willing to use my personal car for inspections because I find that mileage doesn’t really cover the expense to maintain your car. If I ever did consider it I’d ask for more money hourly/salary to offset some of those expenses.

Absolutely! It’s for sure a perk of the job. The current vehicle I have isn’t branded but I did work for a company that gave me a branded car in my first field adjuster role. I hated it lol and didn’t drive it outside of work unless I was stopping somewhere after an inspection or meeting.

Hey thank you so much for watching I’m happy you enjoyed! Regarding the roof SAME! I’m done climbing them lol! I did have to when I first started but I’m in SoCal so we don’t get a lot of roof claims unless there are heavy rains. The insurance companies usually have vendors that will go out and do the inspection for you (complete with reports and photos) so you likely won’t have to climb anything. Plus if you’re not comfortable, they don’t want you up there anyway. Good luck on getting your license it’s a tough test but absolutely attainable!

I am interested in becoming an adjuster, but every person I come across says you work a lot of hours. Is there any adjuster role where you can do 8 hours a day? Or do you just have to work until the claims for the day are complete?

Aww thank you and I’m happy I got recommended to you ayyee lol! So yes if you get an hourly role the expectation is to work 8 hours a day, but overtime is usually available. I’m salary so I don’t have a set start and end time but the expectation is still to work 8 hours a day. Most times working more than 8 hours is a choice (unless it’s a busy time then some companies will ask you to do OT but in some states they can’t MAKE you do it). I for example will log in a little earlier to take care of small tasks before my phone starts ringing and I may work a little over to close up some things to set me up for the next day. In general you work your desk however it works for you and most times you won’t be able to close a claim in a day unless it’s something extremely simple. Hey thanks for subscribing! I’m a field staff adjuster for an insurance company. I’ve never been an IA so I can speak to how I’d like that role, but from what I do know as an independent adjuster you’re mostly writing your estimate and inspection report for the claim as opposed to dealing with the full claim like I do. As a staff adjuster I inspect, write the estimate if there is coverage, review the personal property if it’s damaged and also set up housing. Both jobs can be busy and complex but in my role I deal with more moving parts if that makes sense. Good luck to you 🎉💕

I feel you about being on the roof girl! I have had to climb before and in my role as a field adjuster some companies will require it, but if you don’t feel safe you don’t have to climb. I’m not familiar with the term claims advisor so I’m not sure. As far as being a claims adjuster it’s very stressful at times so you’d have to be very organized to stay on track.

Thank you so much! So the titles vary from company to company but a claims adjuster is usually the one investigating the claim, preparing estimates and issuing payments. The claims examiner typically is more like an audit role where if there are claims situations that are one offs and the team can’t figure out if there is coverage, they would step in to interpret policy language. I’ve seen adjuster positions listed as claims examiner roles so sometimes the duties may overlap. Good luck to you in your new career!

Good question! So these days I’m salary. This is actually my first time as an adjuster being salary, the other two carriers I worked for I was hourly. I’m a staff adjuster not a contractor in this case. I will say salary has its pros and cons. It makes it easier to make a schedule for myself but if I’m honest it’s rare I work a straight 8 hours only so OT would be nice lol! Where I am in life I make sure I don’t go over 9.5 to 10 hours so I can avoid burn out. I hope that helps!

Ok so I get confused. I'm in process of getting licensed but I'm taking the independent adjuster road at this time but as a remote desk adjuster. I hear you are a field adjuster but you seem to be doing the remote part as well. Could you clear this up a little for me? A field adjuster I am aware of has to have a report and take photos, but it seems like you are doing all moving parts. Forgive me for the confusion.

Sure good question. So the field adjuster role is still remote. Basically when I get new claims I schedule them to go physically inspect where I’ll be taking photos, determining coverage and preparing an estimate if applicable. If I don’t have any inspections set up for a day or two then I just work from home on any back end work. I hope that helps!

Hello, yes I’ve worked in total loss and honestly I really liked it! It can be stressful at times because people are stressed when they have a claim and want to be paid quickly but as long as you have good routines and get your work done it’s manageable. There are times when the call volume is heavy but there are also times when it is light it just depends on how busy it is. You’ll be able to take breaks BUT you have to be intentional. No one is gonna make you take your breaks you have to do it so that’s my advice. Good luck to you! It’s definitely doable 💕💕

Hi Xavier welcome and congrats on becoming an adjuster. I’ve only ever worked as a staff adjuster so I don’t have info on how to get into the IA firms. I’d assume it would be the same as if you were applying to a staff role, in which case I’d suggest being very specific (search entry level adjuster, adjuster trainee, desk adjuster, etc) to see what’s available in your area and start applying. Also I’d google “independent adjuster firms in California” for example, and go directly to those sites to see what they have available. Good luck on your search!

It really depends on how organized and quick you are, and also the workload your company gives you so it’s hard to say. What I can confirm is you’ll go through seasons. There will be times where it’s not as busy and you’re working straight 8 hours and there will be times where you’re doing OT to catch up on your work.

I am looking into a career in all line adjuster. I was in a car accident a few years ago where I broke my back and dislocated my hip. Fortunately, I didn't lose my mobility. Unfortunately, I cannot climb a ladder well. Do I have to go on roofs if I go into this career? Also, do I have to have experience in construction, maintenance, etc.?

I’m sorry to hear about your accident but glad you didn’t lose your mobility. To answer your questions you don’t have to climb a ladder with most companies especially if you don’t feel safe or have a medical reason. You’d want to discuss this up front in your interviews though so you know up front if they can accommodate you. You don’t have to have construction experience, I started with none and I was trained. To go into a field role you do have to be familiar with claims in general so if you’re completely new to the industry most companies in my experience would want you to start as an entry desk adjuster first before doing field work.

They didn’t require that I have licensing prior to getting in and most companies that do will assist you with the study materials and payment.

Honestly it depends on the company and the workload. I will say this, as an adjuster you are for sure gonna have some days that are longer than others. If you’re ever in a situation where you’re feeling like you have to work 60 hour weeks, either you want to make some changes to your routine (if it’s only you experiencing this) or the company has a staffing problem. Good luck to you though try it out and see if it works there are so many different paths you can take once you get experience.

Thank you so much! In my opinion the pay is decent and there is a lot of opportunity to grow and increase your income. Depending where you live the starting salary can vary but it’s typically an 8-5 ish schedule so going to school at night is for sure possible.

Hi!! I love these comments and content. I just got an offer for a total loss claim specialist. I currently am an estimater at a body shop. Good money but SO STRESSFUL. I applied to this job because it’s remote and I’m hoping to spend more time with my family. They said hours could range, I’m wondering if this job would be even more stress? Hey thank you so much for stopping by and watching ❤️. Personally I liked total loss but I will say it can get really busy depending on the season. Working remote does allow me time to do other things and have better work like balance so I’m sure you’ll see that as well. I’m big on trying it out. Don’t stay in a situation that’s stressful because your health is at risk. Absolute worst case you can always pivot if you decide remote total loss isn’t for you. I say try it though if nothing else you’ll be more marketable for other roles with estimating and total loss under your belt. Good Luck to you 💕💕

You don’t have to go to school (although some companies will ask for a bachelors degree in no particular field) for this position but depending where you live an adjuster license may be required. If licensing is required though some companies will help you get it, so it’s not necessarily required to get the job but to keep the job if that makes sense.

When I have damage to my house, I expect my insurance company to cover my claims. Insurance is different than what it used to be. A roof claim due to hail and wind damage was denied. They only wanted to pay for replacement of the damaged shingles instead of the entire roof. They said I didn’t have roof replacement as part of my insurance policy. 🙄This is my experience with insurance adjusters lately.

I hear you and I understand. In my experience a roof replacement is only paid for if the whole roof is compromised, or if it’s for some reason not possible to only replace a few shingles. Other than that the policy will pay for only the damage to the shingles that are damaged/missing. This is where it’s tough for adjusters because although we understand the frustration we’re bound by the policy, and a lot of times payments have to go through several approvals before the final check is cut.

Thank you so much for watching. Yes it’s possible to do the job with young children, I have a 3 year old and love the flexibility. I’ve never heard of unpaid internships as a staff adjuster, are you referring to being an IA? If so I don’t have personal experience there but there are a lot of roles where you can get paid even while training so I’d recommend that over working for free any day. As far as your brother that would depend on the company. Having had charges doesn’t necessarily hinder you from being hired most insurance companies are more worried about financial crimes or theft charges since your dealing with issuing payments and such.

This is absolutely a job you can do as a single mom. There are levels to adjusting so you can pick what suits you. For example, when my son was your babies age I took a total loss adjuster position with a company that allowed me to work completely remote. I didn’t have daycare so I was able to work but have him by my side during the day. Once he was able to go to school/daycare, I accepted the current role I have now as a field adjuster where I go out to inspect. I’m still remote but I do get to go out. Yes you don’t have to have a specific degree to do claim which is great. My degree is in marketing and I have coworkers with communication, psychology, the list goes on. Customer service experience is great and usually what they look for in the entry level roles

@@ShanikaTheQueen aww thank you for the compliment I appreciate you! I had the same reservations about the field regarding having to climb so I completely feel you. What I can tell you is most insurance companies won't require you to climb if you don't feel comfortable. That's something I always ask because although I have before I don't now. You can typically send a vendor to inspect/get photos so don't let that deter you 💓

Honestly it depends on the job function and the company. In my experience home owner adjusters will have an SUV (which will accommodate a ladder in the trunk) and the auto field adjuster will typically have a sedan of some sort.

Now that you have your license, update your resume and apply for some adjuster roles. Depending if you want to do staff adjuster for a major company or independent adjuster there is a lot out there, you just need to research what’s being offered in your area.

Most insurance jobs from what I’ve seen are asking for degrees. The only people I know that are in insurance and don’t have degrees have been in their roles for 10+ years. That’s not to say that it’s not possible but I haven’t seen any.

You absolutely don’t need a degree. Your license and some certifications. Most of the big names hire without any degree.

Hello, yes it’s possible to do field or a remote office job, but you’re more likely to get hired for a remote desk job starting out then can work your way to the field.

I applied to the Claims Adjustor Trainer position with progressive and was immediately rejected the next day before I could have a chance to take their assessments :/ bummed because I was really intrigued by their training program. I even have a Bachelor's in Criminology and three years experience working with severely abused foster youth so I thought I definitely have the thick skin necessary for this position lol. I'm no stranger to misdirected verbal abuse and anger haha. I'm bummed 😞

Awww first of all I’m so sorry and second of all I love the sense of humor you have about the situation. I wouldn’t worry too much there are plenty of adjuster roles just keep applying. You’ll find the right fit with a company that appreciates your experience. Also truth be told the first adjuster position I applied for I didn’t get it, applied to the same company again a couple years later, got the job and spent 5 years there. Your time will come! 💕

@megannicole2180 Yes, I agree with Kela. Your time will come. I had applied to State Farm for a Claims Associate role several months ago and did not have an opportunity to take their assessments. I also applied to Progressive too and the same thing. I had applied again to State Farm last weeks - did the assessment, video interview and yesterday was offered the job. So yes, your time will come. Stay positive and proactive!!!!!

You don’t really need schooling per se, most companies will train you. Depending where you live you will need an adjuster license and some companies ask for a 4 year degree, no particular subject.
