I love German Shepherds. I’ve had mine since October, he’s about 5 months and 10 days, already pushing 32kg though.

I've got a question! I'm looking into rescuing a german sheperd for an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) But I'm a little worried it will be too much work. I have an 11 year old lab that I work 30 minutes a day because I just love training, which is why I think a german sheperd wouldn't be AS much work as the average pet owner. I wanted to ask you if you think a german sheperd is the right dog for an ESA or a dog in general, a long with my other dog and 4 cats 😂 I personally think I could handle it, but I read something about how they "feed off your anxiety" Unfortunately, I dont have 2000 dollars to spend on a breeder, which is why I am rescuing. I guess I would have to ask the rescue which dog would be right for me, but what are your thoughts on having a German sheperd in general?

@@lisamclean2352 Well mine is still a puppy and its my first GS so I can't tell you too much, only had him for 4 months or so. But they're great. My previous dogs were all gigantic, 130+pound dogs, lazy/low in activity. My GS is the opposite, but doesn't demand all of my time even as a puppy. Hes super smart, house trained him in 4 days. He is down stairs all day while I'm up stairs and he has never once gone inside. He rings the bell when he wants to go outside. He learns to do things after just a few times. For example he gives his paw on "hi" command and learned that after maybe 5 minutes. They're so easy to train compared to the other breeds I've had. My only complain is that he wakes me up at 5AM every day, but he is a puppy and has to go to the bathroom. But it isn't so much of a complaint anymore since I go to sleep at 9. Mine loves people and other dogs, not sure about cats. But that is obviously case by case. Also you'd want to avoid a certain age GS (2 years or younger I believe). Thats when signs of hip dysplasia show if its hereditary. You're also not supposed to let them jump from high places before a certain age, but that wouldn't be a problem if you get a dog 2 years or older. There are just some things to read up on regarding hip dysplasia. I'm no expert and I may have stated some incorrect information, but its just what I remember.

@@Trebbell Thank you so much! Yes, that's the other thing I'm worried about-hip dysplasia 😬 We are looking in to a younger GS (1-2 years) only because of socialization. We want him/her younger so we are able to fully socialize the dog properly and not miss the chance. That's the thing with rescues, you normally dont know if their parents had health issues. Anyways, your comment was very helpful, and I'll definitely show this to my parents! Thank you!

@@lisamclean2352 Sure np. I wouldn't let hip dysplasia scare you off if you had the chance to get a younger one if thats what you really wanted you would just have to be extra careful. I'm sure there are some steps a vet would know more. I had a dog in the past that had joint troubles but glucosamine helped tremendously. I bought mine from trader joe's, I think its 10$ for 100 pills (dosage based on weight though. 1/2 a pill per 20 pounds I believe.) I give it to my pup just to help anyways. They do sell dog foods that contain glucosamine too but I've been feeding mine raw food, which is actually cheaper than those foods.

@@Trebbell Ah, thank you! I'll keep the pill in mind and definitely be checking with my vet if I do end up getting a german sheperd.

Thanks ☺️ I’ve had him since 4 months old. He definitely wasn’t easy to train! He doesn’t respond to treats/food/toys, so repetitive and persistent training was key. I’m lead training him with a Halti collar every day currently

We tried real food for a while with our appenzeller. But he got bored with it after some time. He also gets bored with dog food, so we have to change it up every other week or so.
