Yes I can’t stress it enough about owners socializing their puppies. I made sure to rake Bane out often around people so he is used to seeing different kinds of people.

Happy Dogg my GSD hasn’t been very socialised due to Covid and he hates when anyone comes to the house and he is now 4 months and we love him and he’s great around the house but whenever anyone or anything comes to the house he barks and barks and doesn’t stop... any help would be appreciated.

Happy Dogg Thanks a lot for all the info will make sure to give him loads of exercise now .... where we live he has loads and loads of space to run all around and he does this a lot and it tired him out lots but he is still very alert and chases birds and whenever he hears a car he starts barking even if he can’t see it,

@@happydogg312 Related to sniffing rears :) we are getting new GSD next week and we will not anymore 'socialize' new guy with other dogs ... i.e. forget all sniffing of other dogs etc. I think that if you want dog which will go good pals with other dogs, maybe some other breed would be more suitable. But what we will do is to teach him to pass by anything (dogs, people) without putting too much attention to them. Just keeping on eye on them is fine, but no barking or especially any aggressive behaviour. So they should be almost like air as long as they keep distance. Could be easier now as our older GSD is pretty much like that now. So hopefully she will take care of some of the training :). And I am not saying this would be only or right way ... but we have started to think that our GSDs do not have to be friends of other dogs...

Here is a few other tips that I thought of about German Shepard’s! 1. Another alternative to walks is having a lot of property, my family and I own five German Shepard’s Grimm and Freya (the parents) and Legolas, Pipin and Eowyn (the babies.) For them something we found very useful is perimeter collars. I know these collars can be controversial but they are much much much happier with them on. They don’t like being in the house for to long and get really antsy really fast and since my family and I own 20 acres of land that also means they have 20 acres of land to run in, play in, relax in, ect. They also have a little patio area that the sleep in at night. 2. German Shepard’s are very family oriented, they love having their loved ones around. So I think it’s always healthy to have two dogs if you own a German Shepard. It makes them feel like they are never alone, and if you aren’t home they will always have someone to be with. 3. You have to feed and water them a lot. Our two adult German Shepard’s get five cups of food a day and a whole bucket of water. The water also needs to be refilled a lot during the day. You could also give them half of the food in the morning and half of the food at night but I just find it easier to give it to them all together. 4. They are very mouthy. As you can see in the video shadow was whimpering a lot because he wanted attention. I still live with my parents but when I move out I am taking the oldest (and the biggest) puppy Legolas with me. Out of all the dogs he is the most classic looking and acting German Shepard and he loves a to talk. Whether that be by barking, whining, huffing puffing, ect. So just be prepared for that, ( good thing about that is you can teach them how to do it on command and if anyone ever comes and messes with you have them bark and that will scare the pee out of the person.) 5. When they love you they loveeee you. You are their everything and they are willing to take a bullet for you. So don’t take that for granted, they are super sweet and loving animals and will love you with all of their heart. 6. Please enjoy your German Shepard’s they really are a treasure to have, so be thankful that they can be apart of your life and that you can be apart of theirs!

Please consider contacting a GSD Rescue in your area and adopting a GSD in need of a loving home. It won't be the GSD who you grew up with but it will be a wonderful way to honor your dogs memory. Don't deny yourself the love that is waiting for you to save it. I am currently on my 4th GSD. They've all been rescues and I love that they have all been a part of my life. I still miss my previous dogs. I think about them on a daily basis but my current Autumn girl brings me such joy. Please consider adopting an older GSD. You've got a home with no dog and there's a dog out there with no home. It's a WIN-WIN

my father gave me a gsd when i turned 18 bc I've always wanted one and it's his favorite breed of dog. i had to move away to study and i miss her everyday of my life. i wish i had a big house where i am at to have her with me at all times. she is my personal body guard. my Luna is perfect. I love how serious you are talking about having a GSD, and how important it is to give them the lifestyle they need. This is my favorite breed and I have extensive knowledge. 1) if you arent willing to put in an incredible amount of hours molding the perfect dog...never bother even hinting at getting this breed for both you and the dogs sake. These dogs require TONS of socialization, they velcro dogs and will be hip locked to you thus leaving them alone for extensive amount of time is a no go. 2) THIS IS A DOG LOVERS DOG and requires someone with experience. These dogs are very sensitive and over correcting can be as bad as not correcting poor behavior at all! They need a strong leader who will spend the time with the dog to unlock what makes this dog truely the greatest dog you can possibly get. 3) they require an extensive amount of exercise. 4) they shed, they shed, they shed, and no matter how much you brush they will shed. 5) they are large large dogs who can hurt someone else or another dog!!!! These dogs can be weapons!!! If you are not willing to socialize the dog DO NOT GET IT. EVERYDAY AS A PUPPY YOU MUST EXPOSE THIS DOG TO EVERYTHING. Pretty much if you are the person who just adores dogs and has grown up with them. The person who literally wants a dog that's incredibly easy to train as long as the trainer knows what they are doing and dog who can do about anything. A person who wants their dog around them 24/7...sleep with them, go to toilet with them next to you, on the couch, on a walk, in the car, at the park, at the store etc these dogs will be miserable without a tremendous amount of human contact. If this describes you then get the dog

Something I saw a while ago and completely agree with is that was German Shepard’s are dogs that have to be *trained* . You can’t simply own one and put up with undesirable behaviour, you have to have a *trained* shepard to have one. Then you’ll have a best friend for life and someone who will be at your hip all the time, a true companion.

I've had 5 GS so I feel the need to chime in. No. 1: Lots of exercise! Can't stress that enough. These dogs were bred to move! If you don't take them out daily for long walks/runs, etc., you will regret ever getting this breed. No. 2: These guys are smart! It's been said they have the intelligence of a three-year-old child. If you don't keep them entertained (especially when they're young), they will get into trouble (chewing furniture, barking, digging, etc.) No. 3: Yes! As the video mentioned, socialization with people is very important if you want a dog that doesn't bark/growl/bite at people you have over your house and in public. And remember, GS are like people: no two are the same. Some have very high energy, some have medium, and some have low (low for a GS, that is). Sticking with a lower energy GS if you have a lower energy lifestyle is best for you and the pup.

When I was a kid I was hyperactive. My parents got me a German Shepherd to help wear off some of my excess energy, which he did! He quickly became my best friend, protector and shadow. Luckily my parents did it the right way and enrolled he and I in a dog training course. Smartest move ever! Not only did he get plenty of socializing with other people & dogs but we learned how to control his impulse to drag me everywhere. I would say to anyone considering getting a German Shepherd know now that you are committing to them being a major, nearly primary, focus for as many years as you have them. Like Vanessa said, be prepared to clean, clean, and re-clean constantly. They shed mountains of fur. I never knew an animal could possibly grow so much hair! Lots of vacuuming became a daily task for me as part of my "daily Kaiser care" routine. Now to the interesting part. Because of my hyperactivity I was struggling in school. It wasn't that I had an attention deficit disorder. It was I had entirely to much energy. Teachers would let me pace in the back of the classroom with my book to read. I couldn't sit still for a couple hours. After getting Kaiser and the high amount of energy he consumed I calmed down also. Mind you my parents had always had me in one sport or another to deal with the high energy but nothing worked like getting me a German Shepherd. He lived until he was 16. A very old age for a German Shepherd and never suffered, thank goodness. It wasn't until he was very elderly that he developed hip dysplasia. By that time he was spending most of his days sleeping or laying beside me. Oh, and relationships.. when you own a German Shepherd you go into those very slowly and with great care. A hug can to easily be interpreted as an aggressive move on their beloved one. Understand their nature is to be a working dog. Create & give them tasks. Back in the day we raked leaves. Kaiser's job was to corral runaway leaves that escaped my rake and put them into the pile. He also pulled the big burlap sack the leaves went into around as I moved from one spot to another. He did the same when we were sent to pick apples, he would pull the burlap bag along and .. well, eat the stray apples. lol .. I would point, he would drag it to that spot. Baths - GS's love their baths! They love lots of baths! Anything to do with water is a huge plus. Get a kiddy pool. In the summer toss a bag of ice into the water and turn your GS loose. He'll be in heaven. If you plan to let your GS out into a fenced yard alone.. sink that fence a foot into the ground. GS are diggers and will dig right under it if they can. They are also escape artists so keep an eye on them when you have them outside and not leashed. Kaiser was by far the smartest animal I've ever met.. which means you need to be a super smart dog owner to keep up. I saw someone mention they don't like to be locked in a room. Very very true. They want to be able to see whats going on.. everywhere. It's inherent in their nature to protect and knowing whats going on all around them is part of it. Just know you're taking on a major lifestyle being a GS owner.. unlike I've ever experienced with any other animal. I didn't get another GS after Kaiser died and only because every time I saw a GS, I'd break down in tears. I loved him and missed him that much. I still do now decades later.

I so enjoyed reading about Kaiser. I was introduced to GSDs at about 2 or 3 years old. My uncle had Prince. I was absolutely fascinated with this gentle giant of a dog. He was so pretty and his fur was so soft. I was hooked. Now many decades later I am on my 4th GSD. Her name is Autumn. I still miss all my boys who preceded her but I can't imagine not having her in my life. I love her so much. I would like to suggest that perhaps it's time for you to consider contacting a GSD Rescue organization in your area. There are lots of GSDs in need of a loving home. And because it's been decades since you've had Kaiser to love and be loved by, perhaps a senior GSD would be a great addition to your family. I'm not telling you what to do but if you have the space and are financially able, why deny yourself the love and joy a GSD will bring into your life and your heart? There's a dog out there who would love to help corral those leaves and drag that apple sack for you today. Give it some consideration. I'm so glad I have my old girl Autumn. She's made my life so happy and eases the pain of having to have said goodbye to Apollo, Hercules and Freddie. Their legacy lives on!

Socialization and training are the key. A German Shepherd that is kept in a kennel/crate or on a chain is a disaster waiting to happen. If you get a German Shepherd, you must be aware that you are committing a lot of your time to your new companion - for the next 12 years! But they give back soo much, they're extremely smart, easy to train, loyal and completely fearless. They take their job of protecting you and your home very seriously and they'd take a bullet for you without hesitation.

They certainly do take there job seriously i can attest to that. Me and my wife went out to Sunday dinner and left my 23 year old son and our German Shep Haze at home,just about to enjoy our dinner when i get a call from my son get home quick dad as a man has tried to get through the front door and Haze has got a him on the floor ,apparently while he was in the kitchen getting haze dinner ready someone got through the front door my son said he never seen a her react so quick like in about 4 seconds she had him on the floor. When i got home there was blood on the floor and a bloody hand print on the wall and this man cowering in the corner of our front garden with haze not letting him move an inch. called the police and i had visions of losing her because he ended up in hospital due to serious bite injuries anyway the police said anyone stupid enough to break into a house with a German shepherd living there deserves whats coming to them so that was a relief The crazy thing is there is a large picture of her in the front window and it says i live here,what the hell was he expecting a poodle.

As someone who has had 5 GSDs over 30 years I completely agree. They are the most amazing family dogs in the world but they need time, attention and space. We live rural so are on a huge property and they get plenty of exercise out there then are cozied up in the house the rest of the time. They are not the right dog for people who don't have time or patience to invest, but for those that do they are amazing dogs.

You need to use a Herm Sprenger Prong Collar properly fit so it fits right below the ears and keep a regular collar on lower on neck .You will be able to make quick snaps with the collar to control your dog from pulling. Not long pulling but quick snaps. Practice on short 10 to 20' walks back and forth. Dog will get the idea quick. Also , you dog was trying to open the lever door handle with his mouth

Great info! No matter the breed if one want to 'own' a dog then one should learn breed traits/behaviours etc.. My Rollo is half Shepherd & half Maremma.. So he looks like a VERY fluffy shepherd! And very fit for our colder Canadian climate! Actually has more difficulty in summertime when for 2-3 months it is WAY too hot - yes it gets very hot here in summer - well over 30 degrees celsius! Poor boy spends most time in doors in the A/C & doesn't understand it's too hot for him. He loves the snow & colder temps! But wow is he smart! We started spelling words like walk & treat etc.. until he learned what we were spelling! So now we're using those key words in another language so he can't understand! LOL. He listens to our conversations to know what we're going to do next.. He is so loyal - to the point of clingyness with a bit of separation anxiety.. not the independence of the Maremma half! I will say though... he did require a heavy hand with training. A lot of time & work.. but it was worth it!

I would love to have a German Shepard puppy, I’m posting this on my birthday. The day I was supposed to get my puppy, but due to my other dog that has been abused and traumatized, I can’t have him. My other dog begins to go after the puppy if one of us gets close to him. This absolutely crushed me and am left heartbroken because I’ve been waiting six years for this puppy to come into my life. I was finally old enough and we were going to go through with it but my other dog just got too jealous and felt like he was being replaced. I still can’t believe it.

Growing we had a shepherd named 'King'. He was a black, relatively small bodied for a the average German Shepherd, but he was a tremendous pooch. He was my brother's dog, and would snarl at me when I was rough housing with him, but when our dad popped in and yelled at us to stop, King would snarl at him. He wouldn't snarl at my mom, I guess he knew better. When we were stationed in Colorado at the Air Force Academy when it first opened in 1960. King would escape and run around all night. One morning we were eating breakfast and King strolls in with a fresh fore leg of a deer that he and his wolf/coyote buddies had hunted that night. My brother and I thought that was way cool and said "Good Boy!" , but my mom was less than pleased. He ended up on a German farm after supposedly biting some kid after we moved to Wiesbaden, so at least he ended up genetically home. I think my dad got rid of him goes he was too much trouble keeping in. Before In Texas, my dad had to buy an eight foot tall chain link fence in the back yard for him. I remember him and the guy who built looking at it and King looking at it and then looking up at my dad and the back at the fence. And then in hop, skip, and leap, he was over the top and gone.

Yeah I have a German shepherd who is now six months old. Because of quarantine, we have not had friends or a lot of people over in a couple months so we are just barely having guests. So basically he has his little pen where he goes to the bathroom, eats and drinks, so it’s his little area for those kind of things. Yesterday I had a friend over and I had to feed him, so she came with me. He would not come to her, and when he was eating, she tríeme to pet him (in his pen without warning) and he snapped at her and got aggressive toward her. That was the first time I’ve seen him do something like that, so now I’m really going to try and work on getting him around strangers so he can get used to it. He is still somewhat young so I think if I start working really hard now, he should get used to it. I have noticed he is scared of new people and some dogs so he needs to get used to them.

Thankyou for making this video. Very informative. And you have a beautiful GS. I'm in Australia and I would like to get a GS one day. I am considering getting one from a shelter though I guess there could be some risk of obtaining a mature or semi-mature GS? My thinking is that an older dog may have an unknown history and may not have been socialised which could lead to behavioural problems. Less risk with getting a younger one I gather. By the way, you have a really nice speaking voice and great presence. You're a natural at vlogging! I could watch and listen to you talking for hours.

German Shepherd are high energy animals. They love learning and playing. Don't get aggressive German shepherd. Get the family friendly shepherd. Ask pet store. they can help you pick the right puppy. police officer or military want aggressive shepherd. They are easy to train. Family friendly shepherds always play everyday. Get female. They love to learn. You teach her how to sit, obey, etc. she will become your family member. They will do everything look like you at home.

Omg I've had two German Shepherds the one I have now I've had four 13 years the one before lived for 7 years so it's literally been 20 years no exaggeration at all since I have been able to have a drink in my own home without a lid due to the excessive hair shedding they do have a double under coat and both of my German Shepherds have had long hair like 4 in Long no joke shed a dog a day 365 days a year you can have a drawer that is closed for three years and open it and it will be full of dog hair you can move furniture that hasn't been moved for a long time and then we'll be there under it you'll be hearing your car hair on every piece of material that you have it will be in your pots and pans I don't care how clean you are or how much you clean you can never catch up for keep caught up it's just a fact of German shepherds it is really hard work very very rewarding and worth it when you have this symbiotic type relationship with a dog that is a German Shepherd it is different than within the other dog they're one of the few breeds that actually do look in your face in your eyes and are asking what you want of them pretty much at all times they are very attentive to you they call you in every single room if you go to the bathroom 20 times in a row they're going to go to the bathroom 20 times in a row with you every single time I always say that having a German Shepherd is like eating potato chips you can't have just one I'm not saying by any means that you have to have a dozen German Shepherds at one time but once you have had one when I am saying is we can't be without you don't even realize it but they get inside you in a way that no other breed does they go everywhere with you unless you prevent them from doing so and then they will wait there patiently waiting just waiting and they won't go off and lay down and go to sleep they won't go play they won't go do anything they will wait for you and yes they are good protection dog's butt as much as any other dog have any other breed you cannot fully expect it to be an attack dog unless it has been trained as a personal protection animal they will alarm bark for everything they find offencive or perceived to be possibly threatening in any way even if it is something on TV they are a working breed so they do need a job and if you don't give them one and they will become somewhat neurotic and yes they need exercise so having them in an apartment while you are working 10 12 15 hours a day is not going to work that dogs will destroy your house and everything in it in short order it has to have a job it has to have a schedule routine and it has to be consistent I guess that's true with all dogs but there's not a better breed than a German Shepherd you just have to be responsible owner and know what you're getting into before you get one I know people that when a dog get sick seven-month-old they want to get rid of it because it's too and everything up and it's bigger than they thought it would get and it changed colors and I'm like oh that is so sad that is terrible and irresponsible you should know what you're getting before you get it it's not fair to the dogs they end up in shelters or worse

@Marisa Batta-Reu Sorry to hear about your dog. I do however respectfully disagree with you. Like humans, all dogs are different. There is no cookie cutter process for dogs to be perfect little angels. This is what i believe most dog owners fail to grasp. What works for my dog, may not work for yours, they are likely different breeds and DEFINITELY different personality-wise. So saying something is wrong ie: taking a dog to the dog park, is absolutely not correct. Are there risks? Absolutely. Can a fight break out? Definitely. But I wont bubble my dog and have him develop a complex with experiencing new people or new dogs. Thats simply irresponsible on my end, I owe him that socialization that he will not get on his own if I choose to protect him from all of life's curveballs. I keep a close eye on my dog and I believe it is my job as a dog owner to always be 2 steps ahead of him. If my dog shows any sign of being uncomfortable around another person or pet, it is MY responsibility to defuse by leaving the situation. My time with my dog, be it at dog parks, recreational parks, or a walk on the sidewalk is MY responsibility. My dog never leaves my sight for his safety and for others.
@jruhhh
@jruhhh 5 жыл бұрын
@Marisa Batta-Reu I believe ultimately this all falls back on responsibility. You can't control others dogs, no. You can control what happens to your puppy. If you fail to be aware of your surroundings, thats not on the pup, thats on you. No issues here with socializing my pup because he is in my sight at all times when we're out. Dog parks, rec parks and walks have all been fine even with uncontrolled dogs coming up to us (because i see it with my eyes). The problem with breeders, trainers and even vets is they are not consistent, you'll get a different response from each one you talk to in my experience. Im not saying throw your 8 week old puppy into a dog park and things will be great, but I am saying dog parks arent as bad as breeders or vets make them out to be if you're responsible. Pay attention to your dog and study how it is growing, maturing and what it is able to handle. Do your research and you make an educated decision. Ask any dog owner with an aggressive, timid, nervous and fearful dog what went wrong and guess what their answer is: I didnt socialize at a young enough age.

Hi im thinking of getting a GSD and just want to know your opinion on wether i should, i own a cockapoo who isn’t overly friendly but never gets aggressive apart from barking at certain dogs from a distance from what i guess is fear, she is quite jealous especially of my cat and will go out of her way to steal a spot from my cat to lay on. Its hard to put together but i have the time and want to put all the effort i can into properly training a GSD but im just not sure if going for a more easy family dog like a lab would be better
