Hey Matt! Just stumbled on your video by accident and I just want to let you know you're doing a great job on youtube. Please don't stop posting, your video has really motivated me to keep studying. I'm currently in 4th year of med school in Italy and I'm planning on moving to the UK after I graduate, so having an insight of what it really is like to be a Junior Doctor helps me to keep on track with my studies. Thanks for the video!

I owe my life to you guys. I’m having my 5th open-heart surgery at a London hospital in 2 weeks time. My niece is a medical student and her husband a junior doctor. Well…. I’m a junior doctor in Malaysia. Need to be in the hospital at 5 in the morning, 3 ward rounds a day, No break time, 30-40 patients per ward under your care and you’re considered lucky if you’re able to get out of the hospital at 5pm…. Most of the time, your shift will end between 9 pm - 11pm 😅. Cheers

Hi Matt! I suppose the hospital you are working at is St Thomas'.. I was there back in February 2018 for my PACES exams. I am from tropical Malaysia. All the best to you...Cheers!

Inspiring video! Can I get an advice, Dr Matthew? I am also a young asian doctor planning to work in UK. But i have a kind of anxiety with my short height which is 5’5” (165cm). I think you are a bit taller. I sometimes have a worry whether big difference of heights with colleagues might bring disadvantages to my career in a Western country. Meanwhile, I can see you look healthy, vibrant, radiant and virtuous, carrying so much confidence making racial/height difference faded away. May I know how much time you give for exercises/sports to look healthy like this and did you need to overcome similar issue like mine?

Hi Matt, great video. Would you say there is a lot of opportunity for doctors to work flexible rotas? I'm torn between trying to become a doctor or a dentist. I do like the 4 day work week which seems to be becoming the norm for dentists. Due to my age, it would be a big commitment and I probably wouldn't be qualified until late 30s so I'd probably also prefer the role which the better pay started sooner as I believe with Drs there's a few foundation years until you reach the good pay, is it less years to reach the higher pay grades in dentistry do you know? Much love.

It has become easier due to some of the restrictions being lifted with regards to visa sponsorship (assuming you don’t have right to work in the uk). All the information you need are on the UKFPO website. The registration for this year has closed, however you can target when it’ll open in 2021 (usually between June-September).

Hey there, glad you enjoyed the video! As @kole ivy mentioned the visa limitations and application process have been lifted slightly to make it a bit easier. It's entirely doable - most people finish the PLAB before coming over and don't have any problems joining a programme!

Hi I’m really hoping you could reply to my comment as it would help immensely with a decision I have to make regarding preferencing. Is there a special London allowance for foundation programme doctors, or is that option only present for service jobs? I have been accepted into the FY2 standalone and have received very high marks on my SJT but I’m not sure whether I should rank posts in that area as I understand that cost of living is quite high.

Hey Mitali, thank you and it's so great to have you in the community! I hope that my videos will be able to give you an idea of what to expect for a career in medicine, and perhaps some useful revision tips. The journey in medicine is a long and tough one but indeed worth it, congratulations on deciding to pursue this career 👍 Aside from the necessities like obtaining grades and extracurriculars, I would advise trying to seek out some work experience such as working in hospitals or local healthcare departments. In preparation for your interview, I would advise researching the medical curriculum, expectations and medical ethics as this can impress your examiners. I hope these brief tips help and hope to stay in touch 😊

Hey Bro Matthew Lee, it's my final year of MBBS course from the university of China(Ningxia Medical University).I'm from Bangladesh.I'm interested to settle my life in UK like you. What's the easiest and the most effective way now for me to be there in London as a general physician (PG is also ok)? Need I apply for PLAB 1 or any other good options? please reply as you're my neighbour😂( China-Hong Kong)!

hey Matthew, what a levels did you do? this job looks really appealing to me but i'm only doing a level chemistry, maths and computer science. do you think it's still feasible?

Hi there! I did 4 A levels: chemistry, biology, computing and maths, but you can absolutely get in with the 3 that you are taking! The main one they are particularly concerned with is chemistry and you tick that box 😊 definitely go for it if you're interested in medical school, it's a great career!

great video! around how many hours do you work a week? and do you work weekends?
@mattbklee
@mattbklee 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Summer! Our work schedule depends on which rotation we're on but it's generally around 40-50 hours a week and most of us work 1 in 3 to 1 in 5 weekends. While I was on ITU I was working every other weekend. Generally junior doctors are more protected work time-wise in the NHS 😊
