Omg! I've been a therapist for 15 years and have always been afraid to do notes or even hand write notes in front of clients. Currently doing my notes from yesterday's sessions as I'm watching this and love that you brought up type your notes in session. Another therapist recommended this to me but I couldn't wrap my mind around it. It would definitely save me time daily. Thanks for showing this!

Wow! You can do it! Just ask your clients to be honest with you about if it's distracting and adjust accordingly. Work/life balance is so necessary for us!

I love this! I am not a therapist, but hope to be one some day. Right now I am working in the field as a direct support worker at a children's crisis unit. My work day follows a schedule for the kids, but can be unpredictable. I work 7a to 7p so I am up and out the door by 6:30am. I tend to use my 30 minute commute to listen to spiritual music or a podcast- usually one about self growth, yoga, trauma, mental health, spirituality etc any topic that lights my soul on fire! I try to eat breakfast either on my drive or before the kids wake up at the unit. I schedule breaks best I can. I am blessed to be able to have 15 minute breaks at work to do yoga, sometimes outside. We have a beautiful back yard at the unit and I try to take breaks when I can, because when I am on the floor I am "on". Although my favorite thing EVER is when the kids see me doing yoga and ask to join. I usually say yes, because I love these organic moments too much to pass them up. Kids really do learn best when we model for them! After my shift I shower before crawling into bed. A shower is a signal to myself that my work day is over. In the evenings I love doing at least 10 minutes of yoga, journaling, reading, listening to a podcast. Usually once I get on my mat 10 minutes turns into 30. I can't teach self care to clients without practicing it myself

Relatable! My supervisor told me the same thing about writing notes during sessions. It helps keep me in compliance, which was an issue for me. I am getting better at doing that now and not overwriting my notes. My supervisor told me to give a summary of the theme of the session. I think doing that is way more effective.

Hi Steph, Love this! I'm looking for a career change as I was recently made redundant in my Finance job. I graduated with a bachelors in Sociology and Social Policy in 2017 and I'm thinking of going back to do a masters in Family Therapy, however I'm really worried I won't be good enough or it won't suit me as it's a very big (& expensive) commitment! I'm struggling to decide between pursuing an MFT program or a CMHC program. Does the nature of your sessions differ significantly between that of an LPCC? I like the idea of both helping individuals with their personal struggles and inter-relational struggles as well as the additional training of couple/group therapy. I think I'd prefer individuals but I like variety.

I would love to connect. I'm doing behavioral health case management and I truly love helping others but the notes, uggghhhh. Not necessarily compiling them, it's just my team lead insistence on "collaborative notes" - similar to your style, with the client. My whole team has told him how that's not conducive but it goes nowhere. I'm stuck also because I'm unsure if I want to further my education and become a LPC or LMFT... I've already completed school work to become a BCABA (I just haven't taken the nation test). Anywhere, lol I'd love to hear about your journey.
