Follow me around & see what it's like to be a school social worker at a middle school. As busy as it gets, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I had a social worker in middle school literally save my life. She saw I was on a bad path, with bad people, and sadly most (if not ALL) of my teachers gave up on me. But she didn’t. When I graduated high school, which most people didn’t think I would make it that far, she was there. And I always told her I wanted to be a social worker so I could help someone the way she helped me. I took time off to raise my daughter (she is 6), but I am now going back to school to fulfill that promise to not only her- but to myself. Thank you for doing what you do. You seem like a lovely woman who I’m sure makes a huge difference. 💗

I am a pre-nursing major, but now I am considering switching to social work. The reason I initially picked nursing is because I love helping people, but I am rethinking it because there is SOOO much math and science required for nursing and it is super competitive. Thanks for the video. :)

Thank you for sharing this!! As a social work major, this give me hope and motivation to keep on following this road. I also hope that it brings more awareness and insight to this field. Social work is very broad, and it doesn’t always involved taking children away from their families like how the media and movies portrayed social workers.
@christinareap8976
@christinareap8976 6 жыл бұрын
M Vang yes exactly ! Also the field isn’t always doing case management work. I am a crisis counselor and an LMSW and by his job does not involve caseloads and my job is a mix of taking calls and doing face-to-face mental health assessments and maybe a follow up here and there. Never knew that social work had more options other than case work until this job!

Not only are you helping your students, teachers, and parents every day, but are helping thousands of helpers here in KZbinland. YOU ARE APPRECIATED! My role will be to oversee 15 schools in a primarily latino/hispanic community. I am so excited for the opportunity I may have to make positive changes where I grew up. If you have any experience working with any student support services that oversee the how schools are implementing mental health care- I would love to hear your experience. Thank you!!

I did my first MSW internship at a school after a long time of hoping to be a school social worker. Although it wasn't the best because my supervisor (the school social worker) was terrible (idk why she's a social worker) this gave me a warm feeling inside. I again pictured myself as a school social worker who had the ease of having the same days off as her future children and just the "ease" of it all. I know it has many challenges but its amazing too. Love your channel! New subbie. I'll be doing videos like this soon lol

This video was really helpful! Thank you. I am planning on becoming a lcsw to be either school sw or medical sw. Your life is exactly what I imagined being a school sw would be like except I didn't know they also had home visits. If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is the difference between school psychologist and school sw? I know the basic difference (education, licensing requirements etc) but in terms of what they can do for the students and whatnot? I've talked to one school psychologist and she usually assess students but doesn't necessarily "treat" them. (she'll refer them to other therapists) Is it the same case with the school sw?
@SocialWorkScrapbook

In short, school social workers are the link between home and school. There isnt much assessment or diagnosing. We work to help students that are having issues at school or home by removing barriers. We link families to educational programs, food, clothing, etc. We can also provide counseling and groups.

I'll be graduating soon with a Bachelor's in Sociology with a concentration in Social Work. I am seeing (in my area, at least) that most employers require a license and a master's degree. Is it the same for a school social worker? I am a "mature" (older) student and mom to three. The plan is to start looking for a job as soon as I graduate so that I can support my family, but it's looking like I may have trouble finding a job with just a Bachelor's degree. Any advice? I don't want to take another dead-end office job that doesn't align with my career path, but it looks like I may have too (sigh).

It seems as though working for the district is a better alternative, when I transitioned from teaching into social work, the company I worked for was under contract with the school district so we werent allowed days off according to the district calendar. While under contract with a case quota (as if you are working in a sales environment) it creates a serious issue when the school that you are assigned to has a heavy concentration of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and the focus in each meeting is "How many cases do you have open?" "When are you closing this case to open a new one?"
@SocialWorkScrapbook

Yes! Being employed by the district is a much better alternative, unfortunately many districts opt to contracting student support services

Hi! New subbie! I am a Job Coach that venders services for the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services for students and adults with disabilities. I have done this for two years. Is there anyway some of that experience could translate into social work? I have a case load of 40 individuals right now. They very in disability and mental illness. I have always felt that social work is our sister service. I love my job. I would love to expand it. I am looking to get my QMHP-C ;) Any suggestions would be great ;) Thank You so much!

To connect the home and school. Often times students struggle with needs that the school can assist with ---we just need to open up the lines of communication!

For the incentives does that come out of your pocket or do you have a set amount the school gives you to pay for incentives for students

Incentive budget often depends on the principal of the campus, PTA. However, these incentives were donated by a city wide program working to decrease truancy.

I like your video! Does the school district pay for the gift cards or did you find a company to donate the gift cards you hand out for incentives for students?

The city of san antonio has a grant program called P16 that is currently providing the incentives/ gift cards. However many businesses will provide school incentives like Texas Roadhouse, Subway and Whataburger

Only individuals with a BSW or MSW can call themselves social workers in most states, outside of working for a Department of Social Services. (Which we're currently trying to change to protect our profession)
