A quick trick unplug the compressor and just turn on the fan motor if it doesn’t trip then you’ve isolated the compressor learned that from a senior tech. Yes u should always test ohms after but this will at least lead u to the right direction. You’re killing it tho keep up the hard work !

That tool should be used going straight to the compressor lugs. Per recommendation from the manufacturer. Sometimes it can give false readings if you don’t go to the compressor lugs. Just a heads up for the future.

i made the mistake with a RTU phased wrong and the compressor contactor welded shut, i turned it on and instantly WHOOOOOOM then it tripped instant, scared the fuck out of me

You do good work. Couple of things to keep in mind. Always check the compressor at the compressor if you get a grounded out reading. The wire could have been damaged routing through the condensing unit, or one of the terminals could have been damaged. Another little tip. Go ahead, and check the cap while you’re there. You could also disconnect the compressor, and turn the unit on to get an amp draw of the cfm. This way you’ve at least checked a few extra things so there’s no surprises during the install of the new compressor. Biggest thing I tell guys is generally speaking most compressors fail for a reason. 9 times out of 10 something else is going on that caused the failure. Especially with newer unit. Either way nice work.

@@EwokDoesHVAC a good way to check is start with capacitor then go on to ohming it out check for rub outs and if everything is looking fine just remove the compressor from the circuit completely and turn the power back on if it doesn’t trip then you know for sure it’s the compressor

Great stuff bro💯one thing I do just to double check the fan is that I disconnect the compressor completely from the contactor, this way is does not trip the breaker and then I am able to take an amp draw. This is just another way I personally make sure that the fan is good

Please brother, after resetting a breaker like that, do NOT ever physically push the contactor in to check operation. Anything can happen. Also IMO i wouldnt ever use that Megger. Copeland has bullentins out regarding that meter.

Watching this makes me realize this about residential tech you can put any one in a truck. In commercial/industrial you never switch on the breaker or replace a fuse into you go through the circuit. And you always change the Txv because compressor don’t just fail they are killed by something.

Better way to explain how your Megger tool works to customers would be "It tests the insulation or the internal wiring to detect shorts" Ive never seen that kind of megger before but pretty cool little tool.

Keep it up. Not being a dick but one thing you could do on these calls is pull the fan and check all the compressor terminals and spades if it has them. I’ve seen so many people diagnose compressors as grounded just to find that a terminal has burned off and touching the casing. Nice work though. You could also pull the wires off for the compressor then turn the system on and push the contactor in to make sure the fan and everything is good. Awesome work man

Just so you know those megaohmeters can cause mis diagnosis. Copeland and Emerson both have articles. Compressor can show .5 and still be good. I have myself run across this on a 25 ton Trane unit. Both compressors showed bad with megaohmeter. They are both running over 2 years later

Don’t use a megger without reading A Stitch in Time by Megger AND don’t use that hack megger, use one with a digital or analog reading. Further reading would be checking out Copeland’s bulletin AE-1294.

Disconnect the compressor wires and then reset the breaker. If it runs with the compressor disconnected then you’ve got a bad compressor. You can still ohm it out to verify, but usually when the breaker is tripping the compressor is gone

Best way to check compressor to ground.Scrape the paint off the top of it . And check pin to ground dude . Those meg's suck . But always check pin to copper/pin to ground

Always check your compressor windings on the compressor itself even with a red megohm test. The wires on the plug could be shorted out to copper and the compressor is still good.

just wanted to mention that the supco megaohm reader youre using isnt being executed properly. You actually have to put it to the leg of the compressor and one to ground. The light should jump and land on a certain ohm. If you're getting a instant red that means it isnt it reading it properly

Check to see if Milwaukee has a stubby tube, I have the king of blowers Ego (765) cfm and they do make a stubby tube. The Milwaukee baby version 18 v blower works fine also, I use it to blow out wet condenser coils.

If you go back to swap that compressor, make sure you check everything! Compressors don’t just die(unless it’s LG😂). Check static and airflow first then make sure filter and coil are clean. If you have an adjustable txv make sure you set superheat as well. If it’s a piston swap that mf to a txv.

A customer doesn’t need to know what a meghometer is your speaking too much. You can test for any immediate shorts to ground from L1 & L2 / T1 & T2 before flipping breaker. It takes like 30 seconds. To verify it is only the compressor you can take the compressor wires off or take the plug out, tape it up, and run the system and everything should run.

If you have a tripped breaker check your compressor to ground and between terminals before turning on breaker, when I was 6 months in I reset the breaker but compressor was shorted to ground and I never checked and completely blew a terminal releasing all the refrigerant

You can also check in between compressor windings. If you don’t have any resistance in between any windings that’ll tell you that you have broken windings. If you have a direct short to ground you’ll have it show on the meter. Otherwise best to check with the megger.
