I still remember starting with the version before this one came out - all different models/weapons/maps. Caen was Americans vs Germans back then. I always modded the sounds from Saving Private Ryan into it, and would watch the movie + play this game immediately after. It was so epic. So many great memories man. Simpler times. Avalanche, Overlord, Ramelle.... so good.

I would play also the early versions where weapons did not have any disperse nor recoil. We used to gather up at a cyber cafe and play the game. We entered the European League at the time and after the first match all my soldiers had deserted, something fishy. Me as a captain got to be executed by the enemy team next to their spawn as a sign of respect and surrender. The map was Avalanche. We later discovered that the enemy team had been using some sort of advantage in the way of some hack. Great memories seeing this video. Oh, and finally we became fourth during that tournament. We also had modded some sounds... wow! what a great game!. I edit my comment to add that on this map when spades where a weapon we would coordinate to run down spading enemies... It was hilarious!. After we moved to CS and BF 1942. On the overload map we would spawn as allies and make it inside the enemy base to throw granades while they spawned. Quite likely some of the best laughs of my life this game.

@@pho3nix- IIRC, in the original mod on the Normandy level you could hear Hanks' character (Capt. Miller) yelling "CATF, CATF!!!" if you get near a radio on the map. In the movie, this happens at the beginning when his radioman takes a hunk of shrapnel to his teeth.

I've been getting back into all the old Half-Life engine shooters (HL1, CS 1.6, DoD, TFC). They all hold up. Addictively simple, without all the complicated bloat of modern games. There's still a decent number of players, servers, and mature communities that I genuinely enjoy playing with. I love that this era of gaming is still around to experience relatively intact. In my opinion, it has aged like a fine wine. Oh, and in your config file edit the line "gl_texturemode" to "gl_nearest" if you want the chunky pixel look. I think that aesthetic holds up better than the smeared texture filtering it defaults to.

I prefer playing with texture filtering on because it gives that Source feeling in my opinion, but the pixel textures also look good.

Memories! I don't think any other game including DoD:S has gotten the gritty raw atmosphere and sound of WWII battles. The voice commands were awesome. Sounded like you were in a movie.

Me too! I even created a custom 128x64 transparent comic spray of a spade hitting a helmet that I left on the murder site to taunt my enemies. :D Especially the campers on Avalanche ... sneaking up on those was the most satisfying.

@@mleise8292 it still is satisfying. I'm still on Avalanche a lot and I make it a point to get in the enemy's base, either side I'm on, and either spade, knife, or beat em to death. They come looking for you lol. One time I knifed an MG guy and they came looking for me, I ambushed and knifed 4 of em, the 5th guy got me and eptied his st44 clip in me lmao

Why is it I could run this game wayy back when it was new without anywhere near a gaming pc, not to mention i was still on dialup internet, but nowadays you need state of the art gaming machines to run current games. Considering how good certain things like environmental details, weapon models look and map size is, etc. this game ran perfect for me back then. Loved it a lot. I could totally still play this game online again, it was better than the 2.0 version of it, source engine. I’m sure they dumbed down the maps and less weapons too…
