That’s actually a REALLY realistic skin tone. I think because you often exaggerate undertones in your style (like those fun pink/red noses you usually do) you may be more used to how that looks, so this doesn’t look “right” next to your usual colored pencils. But this actually looks incredibly close to real life, to my eye. Not better, not worse, just different, and still really great.

Mixing your mediums to get the most out of your art can never hurt. Adding the alcohol markers really made the drawing look even better!

My English is not good so I hope you understand. I'm using polychromos and my husband bought me the set with 120 pencils. And there are lighter pinks and three skin tones. But for skin, I really like using number 189 (cinnamon). By the way: I love your art and your videos! I've learnt so much from you! I really enjoy the Polychromos pencils. I don’t draw realism much but I enjoy using them for my more cartoony art. I also use them for sketching sometimes when using markers or watercolours. Gives a softer look than graphite pencils

The faber castel pencils are made so that the lead is glued to the inside of the wood when they put it together. So you’ll never encounter already broken leads when you sharpen them

I've used my 24 set polychromos pecils (they're the eaisest to find in my country) for sketching for a few years and I agree with your evaluation. I want to buy more! I really love them and they're great for layering, but more pink/purples/peach are needed because just using red/blue/yellow/orange makes the skin look like your painting haha. I've used them with markers too and like the result.

I like using the lightest prismacolors to blend polychromos instead of trying to varnish with the polychromos white, it softens it up

Id love to see a test sketch of some sort where you go through and make a subset of each brand so that each subset has only the same colours as each other. I'm curious how much of the difference is the actual pencils and how much is the available colours…

I’m usually using the polychromos and the luminance Carandaché together. Oh and btw: thx for inspiring to find the right medium. I had struggle to find something that I’m having fun with. I tried Acryl,Gouache and many other things,but it just didn’t work with us. So I bought like the cheapest Aquarellset I could find and tried it “just for fun” and the paintings I did were looking much better than my other paintings. When I saw I’ve fun with the medium I bought a set from VanGogh and I love it! Thank you for helping me to find the right medium for me! So I would say I’m a Aquarell,digital,coloured pencil and pencil artist now lol. I’m still trying to get better at Acryl and Gouache,so I have to trust the process! Oh what I forgot to say: I was so happy when I got some blocks for Christmas,one Aquarell Block,one for sketches and one made out of stone. Everyone was like “why are you happy to get some blocks” and I was like “they’re more than ‘blocks’” thanks if you read ‘til here! Have a great day!!

I have the 120 set, my dad got it for me for Christmas one year, and you do get a lot more of those colors you were missing. Its a lot more expensive though so it’s quite the trade off

Use ivory and the beige to achieve paleness, i regularly use this set and mix both for a light peachy color

Those are the pencils I've owned for an entire year. I'm a beginner but I noticed the skin tone problem. I instead bought 12 Giotto skin tone pencils for 7$ at my local bookstore. they're totally worth it!

About these pencils, I've had a them for years, they are amazing and despite using them consistently they are still over half of their durability. So yeah they cost more but since they are harder they last soooo much longer than softer pencils.

Aw. It sucks you didn’t get a good mix of colors. I commented that I preferred Faber Castell’s skintones and one point where I really find they shine is on super pale folks (I’m a redhead myself so… 😂) With the full set of Polychromos I can better approximate my own pasty skin than with Prismacolor!

Polychromos are my favorite, hands down. However, the white Polychromos pencil is basically useless. It's like a blending stump. Gotta keep some extra white Prismas around.
