Ignoring all the backseaters, as someone who only plays battlegrounds since it came out, outside of a few random games or modes to finish a quest or something, it's really interesting to see the process of someone learning how each interaction works, what cards are permanent versus only in combat, things like that.

He went into it comparing it to other things, talking over the tutorial, looking away, manage to make himself annoyed by comparing it to stuff. He didnt go into this to honestly try the mode, he had already made up his mind about this. If you are in a tutorial, and decide how things work beforehand, assuming the entire intention is marketing and not gameplay, you setting yourself up for failure/ a massively slowed learning curve, as that info will be hammered into the user lmao

I really liked seeing him just as confused as I was when I first came back around when battlegrounds came out, and even now, anytime I play anything but battlegrounds. Something he said has kinda changed the way I explain games to people though funnily enough, when someone tried to explain how a location is like an artifact, that doesn't actually help it hinders. You CAN explain it like that, but you have to understand both games at a basic level, and the person you are explaining it to ALSO has to know them at a basic level, and you have to explain interactions, not comparisons. @@LilyMrrgglton

I was pointing out how he was the one making the comparisons, instead of going into it, seeing it as its own thing, hence hindering his learning curve cuz he kept projecting irrelevant data, like marketing which he kept making a point of earlier in the video atleast, claiming stuff was like it was only because of IP, when in actuality it had actual different mechanics, which if viewed as different, would let one use intuition to find features. Example; Claiming gold is just mana - and getting visually annoyed with it, referring to his earlier marketing statement - when if he just saw it as gold, he could have assumed through intuition "ok so with gold I buy, that mean I can sell too?" etc.

For me least played are BG (only when forced by event quest -.-) and arena Bg is 'who has bigger dudes' mode, and its unfun to make them as big as possible in timelimit. I like to think about my turns a bit and the way bg changed overtime its just imposible. Also kinda boring to watch, the reason is above, just repeat every turn of every game. Same reason i found autoches boring be4 HS made their own version

@@Nastyn1nja808 Certainly none were smurfing. They were all playing terribly. Day 9 managed to cobble together a strategy, but it as well was not good. He repeatedly ignored when the game gave him cards he should have gone crazy for, kept not understanding to have the deathrattle-buff cards at the front, etc etc. I'm not criticising him for it. It was his first game after all, and he did fine given that. But to win while playing that sub-optimally did just mean that his opponents were playing on similar levels.

the thing is, he also makes very bad decisions within the limited info he already has. He can learn to play better with practice obviously but this is an indication he is not a talent and won't be 'great' a factor is of course is his primary job here is to make funny content, he probably would do much better if alone and 100% focussed

@@Blackadder75 Reynor, one of the top professional starcraft 2 players started and lost games in bronze. If you've ever watched a pro level player learn a new game, you'd know no one is good off the bat. Particularly in a game which Daynine doesn't take seriously at all, it's just battlegrounds lol. He's never going to touch it again.

There actually is positioning to a degree. You can influence who attacks when by your order. What they attack also isn't entirely random.

Is it strange that the best thing about this video is the nostalgia for those old minions, all of which (bar the micromachine) have been patched out over the years? It really takes me back. Don't know much about Day9s brood war history except that him and tasteless were playing at a high level very early on, tasteless tells a story about something, whether he was just getting home or doing something else but he just hears day9 yelling at the game like Arty does because he had just ran into 3 bbs's in a row

You do have sort of 2 (3 even) dimensional positioning in Battlegrounds, it's in the form of having the various kinds of shields, reborn and invisibility combined with normal minions. Visually they aren't in multiple rows, but logically they are.

It is SO stressful (in the best way) to watch as someone else makes moves you think are the wrong ones, or watch them miss obvious 'good' moves... Unironically, though, you did really well. I can't imagine it's easy to have a thousand backseaters trying to micromanage your gameplay while learning a new game.

I think he chosen worst time to try BG. BG currently definitely can't be under auto-chess genre, because game is not about adapting strategy to what he gets from shop, but APM game about applying his strategy in most optimal way he can. (What i mean is, that currently game is about executing combo as fast as possible in his turn before time runs out, instead of utilizing resources as much effectively as possible, before his funds runs out.)

The thing about the difficulty of RTS in general is that every millisecond unspent at powering, scouting, harassing, expanding, is detrimental to your overall strength in the game. You could easily point at games that have have more complexity than Starcraft from various point of view, but none of them that aren't RTS can compete with the execution difficulty of a game that requires 100% of your attention and action at all time for 20+ min without interruption. You don't get the death cam or round resets of shooters to think, you don't get the walk from base back to your lane to calm down, you don't get a timer that pauses the game every turn for you to plan ahead. And you don't get a second chance for a mistake, you'll pay for it the entire game or until your opponent makes a bigger one. tl;dr : In RTS, you lose tempo, you lose the game, you don't get a break to think on how to regain tempo unless your opponent is feeling particularly generous.

Spells were added with Badlands BG, quests generally come in during the latter part of BG season before the next expansion BG pass
