My childhood memories brought me here. This was the first song I heard that wasn't a nursery rhyme. My first grade teacher had us learn to read by reading the lyrics. Once we got good at reading the lyrics, she then played the song and we would sing along with Mickey, Peter, Davy and Michael daily. Then after that, we all sang the song for the homecoming queen at the homecoming dance; I'll never forget the look of unbridled joy on her face after we finished. This song will forever be in my iTunes library.

Love how songs immediately put you back to some moment in time. This one invariably jumps me back to driving down a particular part of the 101 freeway as a teenager (multiple decades ago). Even though I had heard the song many times before and after that, for some reason that particular instance of it coming on the radio stands out. It’s great when songs do that.

You want a haunting song from the same singer-songwriter who wrote this one, you should find "Broken Roses" from John Stewart's final album. Both the lyrics and the guitar work are memorably haunting - I recommend only 2 listenings at a time - 3 in a row and you won't be able to shake it outa your brain . . .

I used to watch their show on re-runs in the early 80's as a kid. But I never, then, understood just how talented they are/were. They're awesome, imo, now as a mature adult in his 50's. Love them, I might say.

I think the lyric is "... without dollar one to spend". I'm a huge Monkees fan and have heard Davy sing this song, at least, 7-8 times live & in person. In fact, Davy signed my tee-shirt with me in it!!! In concert, he'd dress like Davy Lee Roth (complete with mesh spandex pants & a HUGE spikey blond wig) and bound onto the stage to "Rock 'n room baby". Micky & Peter would engage playful banter, a shtick reminiscent of the TV show. It was a fun twist on pop culture, the face of teenage lust from the 60's dressed like a heartthrob from the 90's. Anyway, in the live show they definitely sang without dollar one to spend. ;)
