I'm happy that you noticed the beauty on this album. I've always felt there is a lot of melancholy, sadness and beauty behind all their madness (those harmonics, bridges, intros and outros).

Sonic Youth is one of my favorite noise rock bands and they have so many great albums. This was my first album I truly fell in love with in high school along with their other incredible album "Sister." Love seeing new people react to their music. They were part of avante composer Glenn Branca's work and later used his alternate guitar tunings to achieve the strange harmonics and discordant tones you hear on the record.
@tonywhitburn5 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for that insight, Patrick. I'll have to write down Sister for a reaction as well. Cheers!

@@tonywhitburn Always enjoy your reactions, I've been a subscriber since the Neutral Milk Hotel video you did. You have a lot of passion for music and have expressed that intelligently. If you are interested in exploring more noise rock I would recommend bands like Mouthus, Lightning Bolt, Melt Banana and related acts.

What’s wild is that is how they sounded live. I assumed that they did all sorts of studio trickery to make those sounds but nope, all done on fucked up guitars and weird tunings. Thurston and Lee were in perfect sync. The most beautiful noise you’ll ever hear.

When I saw the title, I was going to suggest Pixies, possibly Doolittle, but in the very first minute you mention Surfer Rosa which is my personal favourite. If you like Sonic Youth, I would suggest Sleater-Kinney. I would suggest The Woods as your first reaction, even though Hot Rock is my favourite. Someone suggested Pavement which is also a good shout. Maybe more Nick Drake as well? Excellent channel!

By the mid 90s they had accumulated a ton of guitars specially modified for particular songs. Different pickups, weird tunings, damage done to different parts, screwdrivers shoved under the strings on the fret board etc. Then one night the trailer was stolen and all the gear was gone. They were suddenly unable to perform so many songs because some jerk stole their modified gear.

Thank you for your feedback videos. It's always interesting to see the reactions of a music lover. However, I'd be curious to see a review of one of the albums that made the biggest impression on me when I first heard it. It is Filth by the Swans, musically particular since it is a noise/industrial experimentation. I have never heard such oppressive and introspective music. You either love it or hate it, there are no half measures. However, listening to this album can be particularly intriguing and confusing.

I know it's 2 years later, but if you are still interested in 90s albums there are 2 you must check out: 1. Let Me Come Over by Buffalo Tom. They were lumped in with grunge and all the other alt rock bands but were so much more and should've been massive. This album is almost as perfect as Doolittle and is just pure alt rock to the end. Very emotional and passionate too. 2. Spasm Smash XXX OXOXOX & Ass by Trumans Water. Clearly influenced by Sonic Youth and Pavement they took it a step further in my opinion and made a masterpiece of discordant but riff heavy songs. Experimental too but at the same time so intense. As they developed they experimented more and were adding yelping and screeching but this is probably their most accessible album. Perfect from beginning to end. When some tunes just collapse under the noise and then come back it shows a really tight band at the top of their game. For the love of all that is holy in music you must check these out....both for very different reason but both are so 90s.

Well then, did not see this coming. This was the band for me, saw them play 20 or so times in the 90's. Their entire catalog is very expansive, not to mention all the side projects b-sides, live footage etc. Whilst Daydream Nation is a good start, for me my first album was Sister. Fantastic. The further back you go the more experimental you get, yet you still hear what is to become the Sonic Youth we're all familiar with: Goo, Dirty, ect. A few others I can recommend, ....Evol, Bad Moon Rising, and one other that is not quite a SY album, but the soundtrack to a movie : Simon Werner a Disparu.

@@tonywhitburn Their live shows were both amazing and mesmerizing. It was like walking through a sonic landscape, or better yet being taken through one. All the guitar tones and such were do to pedals, tunings all over the map and creative use of screwdrivers, drumsticks and so on.

Dude, I'm digging your reactions / reviews, dude. If I can make a suggestion? Another important band from the early 90s is Teenage Fanclub and their 1991 release "Bandwagonesque." It's release was overshadowed that same year by "Nevermind"(naturally lol) but Teenage Fanclub were just as essential in opening the flood gates to "popular" alternative rock as yours Pixies, Nirvana's and Pavements -- Particularly in the United Kingdom. And speaking of UK rock, another early 90s classic I recommend is Blur's "Modern Life Is Rubbish." Keep it up, bud.
