This is a traditionally-reamed concert D uilleann pipe chanter based on an older chanter in the Rowsome family, from measurements by Kevin Rowsome using probes supplied by Craig Fischer. I don't know how many were originally made, but a few have been heard by the general public.
The originals are short and were adapted to the modern pitch by using an oversized reed such as one played by Liam O'Flynn and measured by David Quinn. I didn't realize this until recently and so I was scaling my reproductions longer to reach concert pitch with common modern reeds. The chanter I play here is my last test chanter using that approach. I was happy enough with it to risk this stage performance with many other musicians counting on the instrument. Even in this re-scaled version, it has much of what I regard as the classic sound I first heard from Rowsome pipes many years ago.
But chanters built to the original size and shape -when fit with the large O'Flynn style reed- make a better combination, more forgiving to set up and keep playing. I have a number of those reeds and test chanters now playing so this video will be replaced soon with demonstration of the final combination.
Most of my chanters will be turned and reamed of black Delrin plastic, with a natural cane reed on a tapered staple, and no intentional innovation of mine to the original design of either reed or chanter other than a cylindrical sliding reed seat for easy tuning, and a simple, plain visual presentation for a budget market.
