This is the kind of content that motivates me to pay. +1 on the storm whistle. I got into a bush whacking hike with a group of friends and family due to a long ago fire/new growth (aspens) overgrown former trail situation, and we fanned out to find what was the trail. The whistle, specifically the "wind storm " pictured in the video was excellent for bringing the group in to our position when we found the trail we were trying to follow. For me add a big contractor garbage bag. It can be an emergency rain poncho, a spot to set your gear in wet or moon dust conditions, or if you split it along the seams a ground sheet to sleep on or tarp shelter. I also use it as a welcome mat of sorts in the vestibule of my tent when backpacking to help keep dirt out of the tent while crawling in. Beyond that it can be used as a clothing layer to conserve body heat in an emergency situation. It works as a sit pad in wet or dusty conditions as well. Cheap, disposable, replaceable, lightweight, multifunctional survival item. If you're clever you could make a little tent to distill a bit of water from foliage too if you were totally screwed. 1 4d TheOldShepherd more MOTO CONTENT! The compass has a mirror on it. I have that Orion Flare Gun and it's pretty sweet, but I don't have it in any of my kits. I also have a folding solar panel for charging my electronics in my long term bug out bag. Although it's pretty heavy, I keep a Food Procurement Kit in my long term bug out bag as well. It's a FILBE Sustainment Pouch and I keep a Conibear 220, two 110's, Gill Net, Fishing Tackle, Fishing YoYo's, Slingshot and ammo, and some bait for the traps. My buddy and I were out hunting as the sun was going down. We were pretty deep when we saw an ultra light hiker walk by. We both kinda looked at each other a shrugged. The sun went down and we hiked back to the truck. We packed up and headed back to camp and saw the hiker using his phone as a flash light. Asked him what was up and he was off the trail he had intended to take and out later than he wanted to be. Offered to give him a ride to the road but he declined and we didn’t have much space in the truck. We started off again and looked at our maps and it didn’t feel right that the dude would have to hike back by iphone light at least 2 miles to the road. My buddy jumped in the back we turned around and talked some sense into the dude. Gave him a ride back to the main road where his parents were waiting for him. Good win that day.

A few hours in, we came across another group with an injured member who wasn't able to walk. My group was able to provide a satellite phone and portable HAM radio. It wasn't deep in the canyon, so we were able to climb out and contact park services for an extraction. They might've run into a park ranger, but as far as I know, only three groups passed through that day including us and them. The entry point was a private ranch where only the occasional drop-off shuttle traveled to.

This is good timing. I recently bought a chest bag (Helikon-tex) with the idea of it being my survival stuff and bag of items I want no matter if it’s a day trip or I’m carrying my deer hunting bag or my small game bag or my multiday backpack.

That SAWC means more to me now, blown disks suck. Just can't roll an 80 -100 lbs pack anymore. 35 is pushing it for hiking. Good stuff. I do EDC a tin... But it's just for some gorilla tape, bank line, a bit of extra money and a lighter.

Then you should definitely watch Dave Canterburys videos on the 10Cs of survivability.

When you and Paul Harrell "mock" yourself for yammering so much I'm not bothered 😂 I have my playback speed up, you're setting the stage and you're just entertaining 👍 why else would we keep watching??

20:25 Hah! I use those for first aid kits too, the big ones and the small ones. Wally World has them all over their stores. Great minds think alike!

Hey Nut'n, you should try using guitar picks for your starter fuel. If you don't know what they are, they're celluloid. VERY FLAMMABLE! You might want to try it. And talk about weight saving, you can't beat it.

I base my kit off of Dave Canterbury's 5 and 10 C's of survival. It's a very simple system and it can often times save you on weight.

I wouldn't base anything off that clown, he was a fraud and lied about being SF... he was an MP (cop)... Research what has been used, and what works for you the best in your climate.

@@theunfairadvantages The 5 and 10 C's system has worked for me for years. Most of my pack is water weight and even then it doesn't weigh very much.

@@trapperscout2046 and I bet your kit isn't full of dollar store garbage either. I'm glad to know at least one other person here has some common sense about what a survival kit is.

Nutnfancy, you might want to consider the various products from Walker Paws for your dogs to wear on their feet during cold/snowy weather. I had a seamstress friend sew fleece booties into a set of Walker Paws leggings for my Dachshund to wear during cold-weather camping in Michigan.

5:40 Not sure how you're coming up with the idea that a 35-40lb backpacking load out doesn't contain a real tent, adequate water, or a comfortable sleeping pad. My total pack weight, including food and water, is rarely over 25 pounds for a three day trip, and that's with 1-1.5 liters of water, a 3-inch thick inflatable sleeping pad, a chair, and a roomy tent (Zpacks Triplex). I can easily get my total pack weight between 21-24 pounds on an overnight trip, and I am far from an ultralight backpacker. It's not uncommon for people to be under 20 pounds for total pack weight and still have plenty of water and a comfortable sleep system. Gear and material technology has come a long way.

Lol right? I said the same thing. His backpacking kits are ludicrously heavy. Even this day pack survival kit has so much unnecessary redundancy. Ounces make pounds.
@BacktotheOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@JimYeats and the type of person who would go into a remote area on a long day hike with no gear whatsoever certainly isn’t watching an hour long video about day hike survival. It’s nice that he’s willing to put so much time into these videos, but anyone watching this entire video is probably already into survival as a hobby.

only a chump pays 700$ for a tent
@BacktotheOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@dustbustr91 - You are clearly not a backpacker. $700 is a lot of money for some people, and others can spend it without missing it, or maybe they use their gear in a context that makes sense for them to splurge on an ultralight tent. BTW, $700 is far from the most expensive tent on the market. DCF is extremely expensive material, and these tents are made here in the US. In any case, your inexperience is readily apparent. I’ve never met a backpacker or backpack hunter who has ever uttered a phrase similar to yours.
