Chances are you've gone out unprepared. Lots of people do. Then something unexpected happens like bad weather, getting lost, an injury, an animal attack, a fall, or the like. Then your "day trip" turns into a survival situation. And Murphy's Law says this will all happen when you have no cell phone contact.
So we're going to go prepared with a SAWC-focused Nutnfancy Survival Kit! Much philosophy ensues in this video series because people will get confused exactly what this kits is supposed to do for us. Some take the silly caveman approach and go out unprepared as possible to prove their manhood. Others integrate stupid, heavy stuff they'd never really carry. We'll be a bit smarter here while covering critical bases.
As story telling and philosophy interweaves in the series, I will cover each item in the Dayhike Survival Kit (DSK) . My kit has changed over time as new technology produces lighter, more capable survival items. We'll cover Signaling, Shelter, Fire, Tools, Lighting, and more. The Nutnfancy FAK concept is different and is covered in other videos and in future updates.
Our goal here isn't to spend more time with limited supplies in the wilderness. You can do that some other time (like many KZbinrs do). Instead we will accept the discomfort of a survival situation, get our priorities organized, take care of immediate needs, and focus on summoning help to get back home.
So here's another fun and informative WILDERNESS SYSTEMS PHILOSOPHY VIDEO SERIES only made possible by Elite TNP Donors that make this work worthwhile for me! Be one!

Well our clown world continues but I keep cranking out content you like. Thanks much for coming out to the vid. This is where I post mostly b. this is where the audience has stayed. BTW this review would not exist without TNP Donors, please consider joining long term. I’m so dumb how I operate it I don’t even have TIER levels there; you can join for a freakin’ $1. TNP Patreon is where the action is! www.patreon.com/Nutnfancy. Here's just some of the comments from TNP Patrons on this video that were previously posted by elite TNP Patrons: "Paul Griech take a road trip to PA this summer! i will use a weeks vacation and buy motorcycle lol and join you!!! 1 4d small axe Right on! This is the kind of content that motivates me to pay. +1 on the storm whistle. I got into a bush whacking hike with a group of friends and family due to a long ago fire/new growth (aspens) overgrown former trail situation, and we fanned out to find what was the trail. The whistle, specifically the "wind storm " pictured in the video was excellent for bringing the group in to our position when we found the trail we were trying to follow. For me add a big contractor garbage bag. It can be an emergency rain poncho, a spot to set your gear in wet or moon dust conditions, or if you split it along the seams a ground sheet to sleep on or tarp shelter. I also use it as a welcome mat of sorts in the vestibule of my tent when backpacking to help keep dirt out of the tent while crawling in. Beyond that it can be used as a clothing layer to conserve body heat in an emergency situation. It works as a sit pad in wet or dusty conditions as well. Cheap, disposable, replaceable, lightweight, multifunctional survival item. If you're clever you could make a little tent to distill a bit of water from foliage too if you were totally screwed. 1 4d TheOldShepherd more MOTO CONTENT! I live in NM, been watching since I was a kid, 27 now, you inspired like 90% of my hobbies that make life great, im a teacher now, ill ride with you man! especially in the summer when I am completely free 1 4d david rockwell The combination of philosophy and preparedness is a worthy investment of an hour. The enthusiasm for subject matter and excitement of presenter translated very well to viewer. This is perfect for a pack like the RIBZ. Thank you for the continued effort and dedication. 1 4d William R. Also “whistle while you get raped.” Classic 3d Dana Flick fire is good, i think your fire kit is much to large, 1x bic lighter, 1x pack of all weather matches as a backup, and a few fire tabs/ vaseline balls. as survival kit you should be lighting your fire once... BUTBUT BUT... my stove! I found a pocket rocket with a peso igniter... so no flame required to light.. MY kit fits in the pot set. Its one of those stainless pots with the fold out handle that locks the lid in place for storage. Stove, fuel, some comfort food, whistle, mirror, survival bivy sack (better then a blanket) some light cordiage, fishing kit, SEWING KIT, things like knifes, compass, water, real food, multitool are all part of the systems I use... this kit drops into my hunting rig (fanny pack + type setup) when im heading out for the day from base camp. I usually leave it in my vehicle (along with some survival ration bars good for 3 days (2400cal per day) 3d Ol Retired Fed Moto is ok as long as you avoid cars, bad mechanics, rocks, and deer. I love taking notes as I watch. Thanks for taking the time for us! 3d Stan White Love it! And thank you for the links to products 3d Whitney Petersen Hell yeah. Old skool nutn. Love me some adventure vids. Thank you 2 3d Willie Everett This is one of those videos that I will go back and watch again when I am looking at my various kits and bags. 1 3d Tygre YES 2d Lynn E Fite, Col (r) Love these videos: allows me to reevaluate my kit. At 71, my SWC is: What can I physically carry versus what I need. Kit contents change on terrain, weather, and distance. On Snow Peak products, PVR (price value relationship). For me way overpriced. There are other products that perform equal or better with some weight gain. Waiting for part 2. 2d Gregory Hines "He will never be burdened by an abundance of intelligence". 1 2d Creative Mechanic Don’t forget the medicine part of your kits! Having diarrhea in the woods 30 miles away from a road is not fun, I don’t recommend lol 1d Nathan Simms aka Darkpriest Thanks for this Nutn, This just reaffirms the old boy scout in me, be prepared. I just recently went back through the archives as I tend to do and rewatched all of your medical kit videos. I just recently scored a used Blackhawk Stomp 2 bag for $50! My goal for the bag is to put together a WROL level 3 medical kit and would love to see an update to your medical series and maybe see your level 3 kit. Keep up the good work and thanks for all of the amazing content! 1d Damionjr I like the feature length but you need to post all of the parts. I’m a backpacker and a gun nut and some what prepper. Ex infantry. Backpacking is a lot of fun… sometimes but it is excellent training to do without. In the back country everything take 2x as long. One point for the kids: Always, always, always backpack with a sleeping bag. A poncho liner will not cut it. Also a mat to get off the ground.

I am pretty well experienced when it comes to staying alive in the back country, I've been running around the woods my whole damn life. I have the knowledge and the kit to stay alive, but I am always trying to find ways to get my kit lighter and, if reasonable, simpler. @@albertwells8393 Agreed. Even then, there are ways to get lighter options of all the 10 Cs. For example, your choice of container. I use Platypus (brand) skins and gatoraid bottles. because they are lighter than camelbaks and nalgenes. My buddy and I were out hunting as the sun was going down. We were pretty deep when we saw an ultra light hiker walk by. We both kinda looked at each other a shrugged. The sun went down and we hiked back to the truck. We packed up and headed back to camp and saw the hiker using his phone as a flash light. Asked him what was up and he was off the trail he had intended to take and out later than he wanted to be. Offered to give him a ride to the road but he declined and we didn’t have much space in the truck. We started off again and looked at our maps and it didn’t feel right that the dude would have to hike back by iphone light at least 2 miles to the road. My buddy jumped in the back we turned around and talked some sense into the dude. Gave him a ride back to the main road where his parents were waiting for him. Good win that day.

The compass has a mirror on it. I have that Orion Flare Gun and it's pretty sweet, but I don't have it in any of my kits. I also have a folding solar panel for charging my electronics in my long term bug out bag. Although it's pretty heavy, I keep a Food Procurement Kit in my long term bug out bag as well. It's a FILBE Sustainment Pouch and I keep a Conibear 220, two 110's, Gill Net, Fishing Tackle, Fishing YoYo's, Slingshot and ammo, and some bait for the traps. The conibear traps are heavy, but I'm almost guaranteed to catch something to eat. It is for my long term bug out bag tho, I'd just put food in a shorter term bag to last me a few days.

For fishing in a survival type situation I'd rather have a gill net or even a cast net. I love your vids like “lessons of my father”, “depussification”, “how to raise a great daughter” and so on. But, times changed, world gone nuts. I have many things integrated into my camp, hiking, BOK's, based on area terrain, weather conditions as such, 2 is 1, 1 is none is an old sailor's quote, adding a Fresno lense or even a small magnifying glass, I have these two stage tear drop designed ones way next to nothing and work great, actual testing done and I also carry a small pair of binoculars, just in the event I need to glass the areas around me in search of someone or something in my area, in the event I need to focus on signaling in the event of a rescue, but overall, it was a well thought out video, as always Lt Col NutnFancy.

I’ll never be having to survive for days in the wilderness even though I live in the mountains ofVirginia. But overnight during all 4 seasons due to being somewhat off course or its getting dark or in checking out a new area to hike or camp, definitely a possibility. In such circumstances shelter, water, fire, and insulation layer super important. Like your vids

I have a three day hike/camp pack that weighs about 20lbs, but that is in moderate weather (summer/fall in Texas, maybe add 3lbs or so for colder weather). It includes the pack, tent, dehydrated food and 1.5l of water (with a way to filter/collect water). also, no large knife/axe or gun/ammo. Just hiking setup really.

My knee is such I cant hike at all. But every day I carry three things. Gun , often my shield in 45, knife often spyderco resiliance, light often my olight single cr123a ...think its the 400 model although I also have a couple of the new version. I feel as prepared as I need with those three . Back when I worked out of a large van i kept entra lights and batteries and a extra phone battery charger although my van had twin 6500 watt generators.always a gallon of water and a huge bag of pretzels. Not amazing but you could always eat and drink something. Bandaids and ankle wrap ace bandage and benedryl and pain meds. Gave out benedryl after a bunch of bee or wasp stings and a rescue inhaler saved my boss once when she had a critical allergy incident.

5:40 Not sure how you're coming up with the idea that a 35-40lb backpacking load out doesn't contain a real tent, adequate water, or a comfortable sleeping pad. My total pack weight, including food and water, is rarely over 25 pounds for a three day trip, and that's with 1-1.5 liters of water, a 3-inch thick inflatable sleeping pad, a chair, and a roomy tent (Zpacks Triplex). I can easily get my total pack weight between 21-24 pounds on an overnight trip, and I am far from an ultralight backpacker. It's not uncommon for people to be under 20 pounds for total pack weight and still have plenty of water and a comfortable sleep system. Gear and material technology has come a long way.

Lol right? I said the same thing. His backpacking kits are ludicrously heavy. Even this day pack survival kit has so much unnecessary redundancy. Ounces make pounds.

@@jimyeats and the type of person who would go into a remote area on a long day hike with no gear whatsoever certainly isn’t watching an hour long video about day hike survival. @BacktotheOutdoors
@BacktotheOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
@@dustbustr91 - You are clearly not a backpacker. $700 is a lot of money for some people, and others can spend it without missing it, or maybe they use their gear in a context that makes sense for them to splurge on an ultralight tent. BTW, $700 is far from the most expensive tent on the market. DCF is extremely expensive material, and these tents are made here in the US. In any case, your inexperience is readily apparent. I’ve never met a backpacker or backpack hunter who has ever uttered a phrase similar to yours.

A few friends and I were hiking the narrows in Zion national park. We came in from the north where there are very few people. A few hours in, we came across another group with an injured member who wasn't able to walk. My group was able to provide a satellite phone and portable HAM radio. It wasn't deep in the canyon, so we were able to climb out and contact park services for an extraction. They might've run into a park ranger, but as far as I know, only three groups passed through that day including us and them. The entry point was a private ranch where only the occasional drop-off shuttle traveled to.

This is a heavier (~4 ounces) option compared to an ace bandage, however, a SWAT-T would be an excellent multi-purpose medical item to have in this style kit or a FAK. It is a very thick, wide, and strong rubber band that when stretched to their directions can make a tourniquet. Improvised tourniquets are absolutely not effective nor are they quick and easy to make, the data on the Boston bombing showed that every makeshift tourniquet was ineffective. Because it is long and stretchy you can use it as an elastic wrap for sprains or other pressure bandage needs. I would also hazard a guess that the rubber may be able to help with a signal fire and can be used to lash a shelter. Again it is heavy for what it looks like but very very capable. As an EMT I have trained with them and have integrated them into my major trauma control systems and on duty on body carry.
