Daylilies area must have perennial for every sun garden. These hardy perennials flourish in zones 4-9, are extremely low maintenance, produce gorgeous flowers for weeks on end, are virtually pest free, and seem to be indestructible. What's not to love?! Join me as I give you a tutorial on the basics of growing daylilies and share some of my most favorite ones with you.

I bought my first hybrid daylilies (other than the old-fashioned ditch lily) about 15 years ago at a plant-fair. The booth, called the Daylily Society, had so many beautiful and unique varieties that I purchased 6 different ones. Well, my dear friend offered to help me plant, because all together, I picked up 40 plus plants that day. To make a long story short, the plants I had planted took off and were doing well, but the ones he had planted were turning yellow and seemed to be dying. I finally dug up one of the plants and discovered that he had planted (the 3 little daylily starts) in the plastic bag, which were secured together with a rubber-band. Needless to say, I never accepted his offer to help me plant again. Lol! I still have those six different hybrid daylilies! ~Margie

When it comes to daylilies there are 2 types of people - those who would like to plant daylilies in there yard, and those desperate to give you some of the daylilies that are overtaking their yard. The difference between these two types of people? About 4 years😁 Kidding aside (though not entirely), I was trying to find something pretty to grow along the edge of the lake behind my house - 6+ hours of sun a day and heavily rooted, constantly wet soil that does become temporarily submerged during any hard rain. Not always great conditions but the daylilies have THRIVED. They are lovely to look at and extremely hardy. Every season they do try to stray from their designated area but an hour a year of pulling those out and transplanting/disposing is the only effort required.

I don't mind them (not a huge fan) but I wish people would vary the variety rather than planting a thousand of the same variety. Plus they're only in bloom for a couple of weeks (and then their foliage wilts down into mush, not unlike a hosta) so if I planted them, I'd only do a grouping of three to five, here and there.

I used to have a HUGE day-lily garden years ago and planted many varieties that bloom a little different from others to extend the bloom season. Now, I have 2 small DL gardens. I deadhead the blooms and toss them into the yard before mowing. Planning on another DL garden around a tree, but thats a spring '21 project. I'll surround them with black eyed susans, Echinacea and others like it so there are flowers all season.

When dividing daylilies the best way is to tease apart the individual fans until you have 2 to 4 of them in each clump. If you can avoid chopping up a clump you will get many more plants and reduce rot risk. Each division or fan needs to have crown tissue in it. Daylilies will not grow back just from the roots, not even the nodular pieces. I soak large clumps in a bucket before dividing and only occasionally need to resort to a knife or screwdriver to pry them apart. I currently have 400 to 500 daylily plants of many different varieties. A good site to go to to find daylily growers is Charlotte's Daylily Diary. It is a hub for daylily related information. The American Daylily Society also has a free data base you can use to find out more about any of the over 80000 cultivars currently registered.

I don't see why not. Just remember that they only bloom for a few weeks out of the year so the rest of the time you will either have just the foliage or nothing at all showing (wintertime when they go dormant).

I'd like to know how to maintain them.. I have one that looks like something smashed it down, also what to do when you see a lot of brown leaves whereas it should be green.

Thank you for the video. Are they deer and jackrabbit resistant? Anything I plant deer and jackrabbit's are eating. I'm in North California zone 9b.

Unfortunately if you already have a deer problem then they will probably find the daylilies quite tasty. As far as jackrabbits go, I have no clue. We don't have them in NC. Happy gardening!

My comment might be a problem of a little bit of knowledge, but isn’t a day lily an invasive species? I can agree, they are industrious. And I’m still removing old ones from my property. But seeing them on the side of the highway makes me not want it on my property oasis. Day lilies aren’t even true lilies. I do love true lilies. And I believe they are not invasive. Striking blooms.

The species type you see along the road CAN be a bully, the hybrids are MUCH better behaved. You're right, they're NOT lillies, they're Hemerocallus. Always good to know the botanical name, even if you can't spell or pronounce it so you KNOW what you're getting.

Daylilies are not an invasive plant in any areas that I am aware of. You will see them on the side of the highway because they are so long lived and extremely hardy. They do not reproduce by seeds or aggressive rhizomes so they are not even close to being invasive. The plants in the hedge are 16 years old and the clumps have simply enlarged over time and not spread to any other part of the property. Hope you can find some beautiful ones to add to your garden because I can't imagine you would be disappointed in them. Happy gardening!

@@GardeningwithCreekside respectfully, they can & do produce seed. How else would hybrids have been developed prior to tissue culture & tetraploids? I worked for a daylilly hybridizer many years ago.

@@GardeningwithCreekside I just purchased a home an the lady planted these around the entire property line. It is going to take FOREVER to kill them all. They spread like wild fire. They are ugly too, only flowered for a few days. Why would anyone in their right mind do this? I would strongly discourage anyone from planting these things anywhere, they are INVASIVE!
