Daylilies The Easiest Perennial Flower & I have 1000 subscribers!!

Today I'm going to tell you all about my favorite perennial flower, Daylilies. There are so many varieties available and they come back in your garden every year. They can handle most any soil type and they're drought tolerant. Plant these away from deer.

I was fortunate to be able to work at Patterson Labs at UT while attending school there and for a time afterwards before I began to teach science in an Austin Middle School. And one of my professors/boss was Dr. Marshall Wheeler, who was a reknown daylily hybridizer. He researched and named many daylily cultivars and had them named after him. I think he told me once he had over 2000 daylilies in buckets that he moved around in his yard as he experimented with light and water requirements of those hybrids. He gifted me several absolutely stunning ones for my wedding. Sadly, I was not able to take them with me when we moved, but I still have some others in the few pockets of sunshine in my mostly shady yard. They are great plants for sure!

My daughter works at a very large nursery/grower in Broken Arrow, OK & last year they got in 3 day lilies named after 3 GA islands (I live in GA, zone 8b & have often visited these islands.) She called & asked if I was interested in them & sent me a picture, I was so excited & of course said “yes!” I had never grown day lillies before but at age 70 I’m like, “why not?.” This year they are starting to bloom & Im so thrilled over having them. Plus being named after the GA islands makes them even more special.❤

I agree they are one of the easiest flowering plants to grow I started off with 6 plants now the yard is full of them From yellow to orange some look like velvet

Years ago I dug up some yellow day lilies at a house my son was getting ready to sell. I got 2 partial clumps. They grew beautifully and are about 2-3 feet tall. We have moved twice since and I always took some for our new flowerbeds. Now I have many to divide and will be giving extras away. Love them! BTW your channel has helped me so much.

Check your county extension agency. They'll tell you!

They will grow in Florida. Find a Daylily club in your area. They can advise you and will probably have sales. Many well-known hybridizers work in Florida.

4:24 do you think they would do well in an area that has some drainage issues?

If you dig bigger holes and put expanded shale in first, About 2 cups per hole. You can may be able to improve the drainage issue.
