I think you ought to have provided a bit of a backstory to this project. This is an indie project originally created by the guys who worked on a fan made 3rd person remake of Resident Evil 2. Capcom made them cancel/rename the project but were still quite nice to them even invited them over to their office for the reveal of the official RE 2 remake. These guys then created a new project with some of the assets of their remake and turned it into Daymare.

He should've prefaced his review by this. Whilst this doesn't excuse all of game's shortcomings, its origins as a free fan made remake of RE2 which was worked on by a small, inexperienced team in their free time would explain quite a bit, both in terms of game's similarity to RE2 and its flaws & anachronisms. If nothing else, this comment section wouldn't be filled with 'lol cheap RE2 remake knock off' derp.

For those wondering why this looks exactly like the RE2 Remake: this was originally a project titled RE2 Reborn and was a fan made remake. When the official one was announced they pivoted their work into this. Most fan made remakes don't get past the ModDB concept art stage so this is just so cool to see.

Wait, I don't get it. Somehow, the official RE2 Remake is a clone of a fan remake project? I dunno, I just don't get the connection on how this being intially a fan remake of RE2 that results for it to look exactly like the later official RE2 Remake.

Its always fun seeing two of my favorite content creators interacting. And both even had similar views on the game. Impressive considering the indie/inexperienced nature of the team that made it but still will to give honest opinions concerning the shortcomings of the game. Letting the devs know that there is room for improvement but that it is definitely a worthy entry in retro style survival horror games.

Soldiers in the field do often hand load magazines. Usually repacking magazines, for example if you've fired a few bursts from one magazine, switch to firing from another to be sure you don't run out when facing down an enemy and then decide to move bullets from both to one of them. I'm not sure whether it's common to bring loose bullets as well though.

Outbreak had the same magazine mechanic. Four blocks for inventory space, unless you're Yoko. One space will be occupied by your weapon, unless you have a standard handgun as a character's special like Mark. Second slot will be taken by one magazine, which you have to find separately. Third slot will be taken by your ammunition reserves. When reloading without a spare magazine, the character removes the magazine in their firearm and thumbs in ammunition. Once the reload is completed or interrupted, the magazine is re-inserted into the firearm and you're ready to shoot again. Combining ammunition with a spare magazine in your inventory slots is instantaneous, whereas combining with your firearm directly activates the round-by-round reload. Automatic reloads, done by pressing the fire button while empty, or manual reloads, done by pressing a dedicated reload button when readying a weapon, is always faster if you have a spare magazine with at least one bullet in it. Just like combining your spare magazine with a firearm in the inventory screen is. These mechanics extend to handguns, Kevin's .45 being an extremely rare case if I'm not mistaken, sub-machine guns, semi-automatic magnums, and automatic rifles. Weapons like shotguns or revolver magnums, always reload round-by-round. The trade-off for magazines is four-fold, unless you're Yoko, because she has another four inventory slots in her backpack. Being down to only one free inventory slot, you're stunted when it comes to carrying other weapons, healing items, keys, and/or puzzle items. This means that you have to stick with another survivor and essentially take over all combat roles in order to justify your inventory, which also means other players can scramble for different items themselves and assume different roles to the party. Well, that was the case when the game was still online. Sure, Residence of Evil has shown that private servers still exist today and that, with some work, you can still play Outbreak online with friends, any person experiencing the game as-is has to forgo a lot of otherwise solid strategies and do everything themselves. This is 100% viable though, there even being an unlockable lone-wolf permutation to Outbreak's chapters, rendering you the sole survivor of a scenario, just be prepared to babysit the A.I. and hope to God they don't get lost after automatically picking up important progression items.

RE Outbreak actually had similar a magazine system, you could find magazines and instantly load rounds in them via combining its respective ammo, resulting in much quicker reloads. If you didn't have a spare magazine, you have to manually load bullets one at a time in the magazine that's in the weapon. Just something I felt that was worth bringing up.

The best way to make a nostalgic homage is not to recreate the shortcomings of the past, but take the best parts of them and reinvigorate them with something new to enhance the experience to what it COULD have been back then...just look at the Resident Evil remakes.

I appreciate the effort and commitment to survival horror design, but I can't escape the feeling that this is little more than a poor man's Resident Evil 2. It just doesn't do enough of it's own to distinguish it from what inspired it, and so it's ultimately no more than the sum of it's parts. Also the characters are not likable at all, unlike Resident Evil which actually had great characters and often a sense of humour.

I think with the reload system, the devs trying to convey a more tactical & careful combat/gunplay, very similar to "Insurgency" games (btw you should totally review those games) & I think it's a pretty neat feature for a survival horror game. But yeah the equipment system is just slow & clunky af, especially if you play with k+m ('cause no support for mouse movement!), which I think the biggest hurdle they need to fix right away. So many potentials with this game imo. I think the devs should prioritize to make the weapon switching & equipment system a lot faster or more dynamic, also maybe fix/put a proper zombie mauling animation (which clearly just a jump cut animation imo).

The first thing i think about survival horror games, is infinite ammo during bossfights. I hate when games don't let you into a fail-state just by being terrible at them, i mean, you have to be really bad at a RE game to run out of ammo before a bossfight.

Honestly I have no idea why so many comments are praising the game. I tried it recently and it just sucks. The story is bad, the animations are awful, the gameplay is bad, movement and shooting are very clunky, the dialogue is written by an edgy preteen. I get that this is an indie dev but you can't just use that excuse for any awful game that comes out from an indie company. Take Nightmare of Decay for example, that game was made by 1 singular person and its way better than this game.

"Resident Evil: Outbreak" and "Outbreak - File 2" (the more superior Resident Evil Games imo) had a system where if you have a gun and a box of ammo and had to reload, instead of reloading a magazine your character would instead pull out the current magazine and fill it with the box of ammo before slapping it back in. it took longer to reload and was more inconvenient but it was also somewhat realistic. Then when you found a Magazine for your weapon and ammo type you could then refill the magazine with the box of ammo manually and reload faster using those magazines. I think if this game used that mechanic it might have been more tolerable.

I recently got this game from GOG, I guess as a promotion because the prequel is coming out soon. I guess they did an update to the reloading mechanic as there is an option in the beginning to play "modern mode" which supposedly ditches the magazine reloading stuff. I still went with the original as it's realistic and makes sense.

Glock and Beretta doing the same damage makes sense. Both fire the same 9x19 round and have very similar barrel lengths and pressures generated during fire. What doesn't make sense is that the MP5 does so little damage. That thing has a longer barrel allowing for more pressure to build and increase muzzle velocity leading to a bigger hit on impact. So it should do more damage than the pistols. Could have balanced it out by adding far more zombies to the campaign that has the MP5.

I never even heard of this game until yesterday when I found it on sale in the bargain bin at GameStop lol. Just finished chapter 3 and I'm enjoying it so far (I'm playing on "modern" mode because it removes the atrocious reload mechanic, but it also removes the infinite ammo boxes so you can easily run out of ammo during boss fights) but I absolutely despise how bullet spongey everything in the game is. Some zombies will take 3 or 4 point blank shotgun blasts to the face and still continue to get up and chase you, and the bosses have such massive health reserves that every boss fight uses up literally all my ammo. That dual boss fight at the helicopter crash site took me like 15 tries because I kept running out of ammo before they were dead. At that point, it's not a fun challenge anymore, it's just obnoxious.

However I hope horror games stop having deliberately clunky and unintuitive conrtrols and interfaces because “that’s what old games did” yeah but they’ve moved on and so should you. Don’t handicap your game for the sake of authenticity. It pains me when horror games do that. Still checking this out though next chance I get because I love third person survival horror so much

I don't think it's unwelcome to keep trying with new methods to build/boost tension or indicate the importance of being ready when you set out into a mission.
