After almost 40 years this is still one of the greatest dance songs EVER!!...and one of the filthiest. Based on your reaction, it's pretty easy to see why this video was banned and a new (highly sanitized) video was shot. There was NO WAY this was getting played on MTV in 1983. Even the song lyrics are blatantly graphic. The band tried to say the lyrics were not sexual and the song was about motivation, but they soon dropped that pretense and admitted the lyrics meant exactly what they say.

A UK #1 and that ban. "Relax" was consensual after-all. In its flesh 'n' leather sleeve, aching for punishment - as public and official as possible. It wanted to provoke, to delight, to suggest, to make us dance. It certainly did that.

I'm the same about this song. I liked it fairly ok at the time, but never have sought it out since. In highschool we knew it was banned in England (radio play), so we knew what the lyrics meant. I can specifically remember in HS Spanish class a girl commenting on the meaning of the title. That come wasn't meant to be spelled with an "o". 😲

Yeah - Frankie Goes to Hollywood were a bit disturbing - being very provocative was part or their business model ;) Back in the early 80s music still had the possibility to provoke - something today nobody cant even imagine ;) Question is if you want more 80s synth stuff - you already listened to Kim Wilde. Great female pop singer of the 80s. If you want more - check out the early Depeche Mode if you dont know them. My suggestion there would be "People are People", "Everything counts" and "Stripped". But... as already suggested under another videos of yours - I would try a non-english song: Matia Bazar - Ti sento An italian band with a great female singer. This is a real great synthi pop song - in my opinion one of the best of the 80s. But there are so many great songs from that time peroid. One early harder rock + synthi song: "killing joke - love like blood" Enough. Came to your channel just this evening although watch reaction channels for more than 1,5 years now (yeeaaaah - I am crazy :-D ) - keep up your approach. It is a pleasure watching you - very hones and emotional.

Yes, this was even banned on BBC, the British channel. It was meant to shock and is a distraction to one of the best dance jams of the 80's. Imagine it loud in a dance club with the thumping beat and thunder claps. Seems the reactor doesn't like heavy electronic beats.

I just loved the sound, frankly maybe was too naive and young to realise what this song was about, esp since they released songs like the Power of Love, and Two Tribes go to War, maybe again misunderstood the intention of the songs, but for me I have always listened to music without judgement or trying to understand meaning, the sounds the unique sounds of the voices is what appeals to me in a song esp first time hearing it, ai never try to over analyse them re a message or intention if there is one, that said, I did wake up to what this song was about and hearing it again now with your reaction it amazes me how clear it is, yet at the time, it was just a new group with a new sound that sounded cool, none of my group had any idea at the time.

Teachers and parents in the UK were horrified by this when it came out and one DJ managed to get it banned from BBC Radio 1, so, of course, all of us teenage kids immediately embraced it, sang it around school, and made endless amateur 'remixes' of it (on cassette tapes...), even if we didn't identify with (or even really understood properly) the subculture it was representing. Does it piss off adults? Yes? Must be good then...😈😈😈

@@DayOneReacts It breaks down like this. The first one, which you saw, was directed by Bernard Rose (who made the original CANDYMAN), came out in 1983, and was banned by both the BBC and MTV. So there was a second video by Godley & Creme (formerly in the band 10cc) which was just a standard in-studio performance clip, which was allowed on MTV, but the song didn't chart in America and it pretty much vanished. Then, in the summer of 1984, director Brian de Palma used it in a pivotal sequence in his erotic thriller BODY DOUBLE, and at the same time shot extra footage so that a music video could be made both to resolicit the single in America and promote the film. It really just sorta restages imagery from the first banned video, but now in a more heterosexual setting with the movie's stars, though there is still a significant gay tone, such as all the other women in the video being either drag queens or trans. This video was also ultimately banned on MTV, but the movie did enough business that clubs and radio started playing the song. Finally, the last video was released in 1985 when the song became a hit, and their album WELCOME TO THE PLEASUREDOME was being promoted. It was a live concert clip directed by David Mallet, where they were very strategically surrounded by screaming girls during the performance, to try making the band more palatable to mainstream audiences. (For the record, only the lead singer Holly Johnson and backup singer Paul Rutherford were gay)

As with a lot of things, context is everything. danced to to in a packed nightclub really loud it made sense. The sound of this song is typical of the Trevor Horn production company ZTT. Trevor along with his wife Jill Sinclair and New Musical Express editor Paul Morley. invested in what was the then one of the worlds most cutting edge musical devices. the Fairlight Emulator. it cost an enormous amount of money and was at the forefront of the digital age in music. For yourself or the channel. doesn't matter either way. Lay down in a dark room with your headphones and listen to the Frankie song 'Welcome to the Pleasure dome.' see what you think of that.
