For me, a quintisential 80's song. One of those that defines the sound of the decade. A song the band wasn't even thrilled about before and after recording it (wasn't written by them); turned out to be their biggest hit. But they have so many other great ones.

The quintessential high school experience of the 80's generation. The jocks, the cheerleaders, the geeks, the wierdos, and the stoners! We really did travel in those packs with some overlap, but not that much. We listened to the same music, but we lived vastly different experiences. One of my favorite 80's teen angst films is "The Last American Virgin" The soundtrack is even better than "The Breakfast Club" and the ending of the movie is absolutely soul crushing, especially if you're a male. One of the few movies that comes down to the last two minutes of the film and leaves you stunned!

Sad but true. “Simple Minds” never liked this song, and stated they never understood the song. They did it due to their agent and the record company. It was a HUGE hit. It was intended for Billy Idol, but he didn’t like it either. He grew to love it and performs it live. He regrets turning it down in the first place.

This is a film about suburban high school in the 80's. There were the stereotypical icon of each major group in the school (the jock, the princess, the druggie, the brain/nerd, and the basket-case). Throwing them all together for a day in detention and telling them to shut up encourages them to do the opposite and actually talk with one another, which allows them to communicate with each other and really see each other for the first time. At the time of it's release it was rather controversial as some of the topics the students discuss are very serious, but Generation X loved it as it showed how we were learning how to deal with those very topic on our own as our teachers and parents really couldn't be there for us. We were the first generation ever expected to have a standard of living lower than our parents - nobody expected the Great Depression. We knew what was coming and we'd been told since we were in Elementary School that Social Security would be an expense our whole life and we'd likely never see a dime coming back to us. Both of our parents were off working for hours after school was out, and the single-parent household was becoming more common. We had to learn to take care of ourselves and we did. There are more entrepreneurs and business owners in Generation X than any other.

Written by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff. Produced by Keith Forsey. The movie director the late John Hughes was a fan of rock music. Billy Idol recorded his version but Hughes rejected it! 😖 In the 2000s, Billy Idol released his version. Producer Keith Forsey offered the sing to Bryan Ferry, Corey Hart and Cy Curnin but all of them rejected it. Simple Minds was offered the song. At first, they rejected it. Pretenders lead singer Christie Hyde, then wife of Jim Kerr, heard it and convinced him to reconsider. He put conditions: Simple Minds want to rearrange the song and add la la la la at the ending. Producer Keith Forsey agreed! 😃 At that time, Simple Minds members were frustrated 😞 because their songs that were hits in Europe 🇪🇺 were not hits in the USA 🇺🇸. After the recording, members of Simple Minds thought this would be a hit! 🙄 They were correct! ✅ The live anniversary version where leading actress Molly Ringwald introduced the sing and joined Taylor Swift in the audience is fun and nostalgic. 😃 Suggested song: Simple Minds performs Waterfront 💧
