I'm so happy the director put this ending in. He was going to end it without the visual of the Red and Andy reuniting.
@marcoadan120 күн бұрын
I'm reminded of the scene where Red makes the promise. There was no hesitation. He said, "Sure, Andy... Anything." No man is poor who has friends.😊

I always loved so much how Red completely ignored his hat flying off and blowing towards the ocean. He was just so glad to see his friend again. So wholesome! 🥰

Red is a friend even to a missing man. As Red carves, "So was Red" next to "Brooks was here," Brooks is remembered, he's no longer alone! The whole movie is one helluva BRO-MANCE!

I love that there's no dialogue between Red and Andy when they meet again; instead, the last spoken words are Red's narration, which is taken straight from the original story.

How in gods name did this movie bomb at the oscars. And to this very day it is still considered one of if not the greatest movie ever made. When the Godfather is on you watch it, when Goodfellas is on you watch it. When The Shawshank Redemption is on you watch it. It is a masterpiece. You wouldn't thing that the king of the horror books would wright something about Hope in prison.

I’ve heard that the original ending was going to be different but after screen tests they changed it to this. Originally Red was just on the bus and he and Andy don’t see each other

Red and Andy not seeing each other is how the book ends.

For the movie, them seeing each other at the end was definitely the way to end it. It wouldn't have been the same or had the same impact. Not even close.

Many people don't know but this movie is based on a book written by none other than Stephen King. So was The Green Mile. King is just not horror (mainly, but not only).
@UserAndLoser198520 күн бұрын
Yep. And this is one of the few instances in which the movie is clearly better than the book. Although the book is really good - it just doesn’t compare to the masterpiece that the film is.

@medalion139016 күн бұрын
People often complain about studios meddling with movies, but if it hadn’t have been for that then we wouldn’t have gotten this ending. Originally it was simply going to fade to black as the bus drives away with Morgan Freeman saying “I hope…” but test audiences didn’t like that and the studio insisted they add the scene where Andy and Red are reunited.

Back in 1995, I was 23 and on a coach/bus of 49 burley middle-aged football supporters on a Wednesday night coming back to London from Birmingham. This film was put on, about a minute in a comment from the back of the bus was “Turn this shit off” but inside of 20 minutes an eerie silence descended over the coach. There was normally taking, snoring and background noise on a midweek game but that night, nothing. I soothed the wild beast until we got to drop off point, The journey was a little over 2 hours and this is a 2h 22m film and so we never got to see the end and there was bedlam. The next night I rented it from Blockbusters and watched on the weekend with my girlfriend, who initially didn’t want to see it but again 20 minutes in she was completely engrossed and we…sorry she, SHE, she was in tears at the end! 🥹
